Railway stampede leaves five cows dead

30-09-2008 By Andy Chiles, The Argus, UK

Five cows died after stampeding onto the electric rail of a set of train tracks, causing hours of cancellations and delays. The animals were part a herd which panicked while being led across a level crossing close to Southease station, near Newhaven, at 9.15am.

They stampeded onto the tracks and the five were electrocuted as they made contact with the high voltage rail.

A spokesman for Network Rail, which is in charge of maintaining the tracks, said: "At the moment we don't know exactly what happened. Clearly something spooked the cows, although we don't know what, and they ran off. It was a very unfortunate incident."
He said the farmer who was with the animals had pre-arranged to take the herd across the crossing, following Network Rail's regular procedures.

Rail services on the line between Lewes and Newhaven were suspended by operator Southern Railway as soon as the farmer raised the emergency call and replacement bus services were put in place.

The electric supply to the line was shut down. Trains between Brighton and Eastbourne were also disrupted while Network Rail mounted an operation to remove the dead animals from the tracks using 4x4 vehicles.
It was almost five hours before the line was returned to use at 2.20pm.
Network Rail said there had been no permanent damage to the railway line.

Convicted mink-farm saboteur offers defense fund

30-09-2008 Associated Press, LocalNews8 Idaho Falls, USA

KAYSVILLE, Utah (AP) - An animal-rights activist is offering to indemnify anyone charged in the release of thousands of mink from a Utah mink farm earlier this month. The man, who has a 2005 conviction for sabotage at mink farms, contacted both Salt Lake City newspapers and the Standard-Examiner of Ogden with his offer.

Peter Daniel Young, 30, says he'll contribute $2,500 to the defense of anybody caught for Utah's Sept. 21 raid in Kaysville.

Young spent two years in federal prison for breaking into mink farms in Wisconsin, South Dakota and Iowa in 1997, cutting fences and freeing the animals from their cages.
The Animal Liberation Front has claimed responsibility, saying 3 of its "soldiers" were behind the Kaysville raid.

Young says the perpetrators were answering to a higher law of conscience and that mink farms are cruel.

Boeren in Zuid-Holland verliezen daardoor jaarlijks bijna 100.000 euro.

Owner saves dog from shark's jaws

A Florida Keys man punched a shark to save his dog from becoming a meal. The rat terrier named Jake, who was badly bitten, is expected to recover.

30-09-2008 By CAMMY CLARK, cclark@MiamiHerald.com, Miami Herald, USA

ISLAMORADA -- Greg LeNoir watched in horror as the shark's mouth opened wide, chomping a large set of teeth on his beloved 14-pound dog, Jake. ''Noooooo,'' LeNoir shrieked, fearing the worst. But the case of the rat terrier vs. the shark has a happy ending.

''Jake's doing great,'' LeNoir's brother, Phillip, said Monday. ``And I still can't believe my brother jumped in the water and punched a shark.''

The saga began Friday afternoon when Greg LeNoir took Jake to the Worldwide Sportsman's Bayside Marina pier in Islamorada for the dog's daily swim. LeNoir said Jake is a fast and fearless swimmer, often retrieving jellyfish and soaked coconuts.

But this time, Jake, a 28-month-old dog adopted from an animal shelter, unexpectedly encountered the shark, which was about five feet long. As Jake disappeared under the water, LeNoir conquered his own fear and sprang to action.
''I clenched my fists and dove straight in with all my strength, like a battering ram,'' LeNoir, 53, said Sunday, reliving the frightening ordeal. ``I hit the back of the shark's neck. It was like hitting concrete.''

Sharks are not uncommon in the marina, which is near the Islamorada Fish Co.'s open saltwater pool that attracts large tarpon.

LeNoir, a finish carpenter who lives in Islamorada, said he concluded the creature was either a bull shark or lemon shark after describing it to local fishermen and another brother, Louie, a shark-tooth collector in Orlando.

LeNoir's wife of 17 years, Tessalee, said she wasn't shocked by her husband's heroics. ''People know him as Dr. Doolittle,'' she said. ``He's the one who climbs up a tree to save a possum.''
Lenoir added: 'We have no children. Jake became our child. When I saw the shark engulf him, I thought, `This can't be the end.' ''

The shark let go of Jake, and the dog popped to the surface, frantically swimming the few yards to shore. LeNoir followed, paddling through a red trail of blood from the dog.

At VCA Upper Keys Animal Hospital in Islamorada, veterinarian Suzanne Sigel and emergency on-call assistant Callie Cottrell patched Jake's wounds.
''Amazingly, he wasn't critical,'' Sigel said. ``He's one lucky dog.''
The shark's teeth punctured Jake's skin and some muscle on the dog's abdomen, chest and back in a pattern that looked like ''an upside-down smile,'' Sigel said.
Jake also suffered lacerations on his right side and front left leg, with skin hanging like ribbons, LeNoir said.

''The shark put almost all of Jake in his mouth, except for his head and three of his legs,'' LeNoir said.
Sigel reexamined Jake on Monday and said the pooch is expected to recover.
''He looks great and is recuperating well,'' she said. ``I was worried he may have inhaled saltwater when he was pulled under, but there's no evidence of infection or pneumonia. He's healing great.''

Japanese performing dolphins go on a diet

Dolphins at a marine park in Japan are put on a new diet and exercise regime after piling on the pounds

30-09-2008 Lee Glendinning and agencies, guardian.co.uk,

Dolphins at a marine park in Japan have been put on a diet after developing pot bellies and failing to hit jumping targets. Staff at Kinosaki Marine World in western Japan became concerned last month when they noticed the aquatic performances of the plumper dolphins were beginning to suffer.

Keepers were confused by their apparent sluggishness and noticed the animals were having problems keeping upright while treading water.
"We were puzzled by their poor performance, then we noticed they looked rounder,'' said Haruo Imazu, the park spokesman.

The dolphins were weighed and keepers realised that all 19 had become heavier. Some had put on up to 10kg (22bl) over the summer.

But keepers could not work out why, as their diets had not changed. The creatures were all fed from the same menu – 15kg (31bl) of mackerel mixed with white fish. Then they discovered that the mackerel the dolphins had been eating had become fattier, hence the weight gain.

The dolphins have since been put on a low-fat diet and weight loss programme, including a new exercise regime.

regionale slacht ofwel kortere transporten

Girl ‘doing well’ after lion attack

30-09-2008 Daily Dispatch, South Africa

AN EIGHT-YEAR-OLD girl mauled by lions on her family’s farm in Zimbabwe wa s “doing very well” at the Netcare Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg. Courtney Sparrow was “chatting with soft toys on her bed”, hospital spokesperson Amelda Swartz said yesterday.

She said Sparrow was moved from the hospital’s intensive care unit to a general ward in the hospital on Sunday afternoon.
Swartz said the young girl had undergone 10 hours of extensive surgery since she was admitted on September 17 .

According to Afrikaans Sunday newspaper Rapport her parents, Margaret and Ron Sparrow, had used two young lions to protect the family from land invaders on their farm in Masvingo.
Sparrow, who breeds lions, told the newspaper that the farm had been attacked by war veterans four times in the past three months, once when his wife was alone at home with Courtney and her six-year-old sister Savannah.

However, one of the animals jumped through an open window into their farmhouse and dragged Courtney outside.
A farm worker then hit the lion with a stick until it let go of her, but when she tried to run away she was caught by the other lion. The farm worker also then managed to chase away the second lion.
By then Courtney had sustained serious injuries to her head and arm and had a punctured gullet.

Primatologe Jane Goodall lovend over orang-oetans in dierentuin Perth (Australië) - Goodall: 'Sommige dierentuinen zouden echter dicht moeten'

Perth orang utans impress Jane Goodall

30-09-2008 Perth Now, Australia

ZOOS must help conserve environments and species if they are going to continue to exist, renowned primatologist and conservationist Jane Goodall said today. The 74-year-old - who has been part of the longest unbroken primate study in the world with the Gombe chimps in Africa - still believes some zoos should be closed because of their poor treatment of animals.

But starting a speaking tour of Australia and New Zealand today, the conservationist said the orang-utan exhibit in Perth was ``absolutely wonderful''.
``The best I've seen,'' she said.
``I love it that they're all in their separate family groups and not kept in an artificial way. I love the structure of it, so that it's resembling the elements of a tree canopy.''

HIGH PRAISE: Orang-utan baby Nyaru and mum Negara at Perth Zoo last year. Picture: Derek Smith

The only reasons zoos should be open is to conserve the environment, Dr Goodall said.
``I think if they're going to continue to exist they must,'' Dr Goodall said.
``I don't think it's ethical to have animals from other countries and not be involved in some way in conservation. We can't recreate the wild, but we can recreate something where at least they're not actively unhappy.
``The orang-utans here, they have beautiful healthy coats, they're shiny, glossy, I don't see any aberrant behaviour, rocking to and fro, so it is possible to do a good job.''

Perth's urban sprawl, which is growing at a fast pace north and south of the city, was the biggest threat to the environment in Western Australia, Dr Goodall said.
``When you have developers going in and paying absolutely no attention to anything that's out there ... thoughtlessly ripping up the natural habitat to put in their developments, then you get all sorts of animal species which are endemic, at risk of extinction.''

Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey and Birute Galdikas were pioneers in primate research and conservation, selected by anthropologist Luis Leakey.
``He thought women would make better researchers and he was trying to find the links between oldest man and primates,'' director of the Jane Goodall Institute of Australia, Polly Cevallos, said today.
``He chose Jane to do chimps, Dian Fossey to do gorillas and Birute Galdikas orang-utans.
``We call (them the) ape royalty.''

Dr Goodall returns to Africa for one month a year to meet up with her primate ``family'' that she has known since the 1960s.

Asked if her work, which takes her away from her home in Bournemouth, England, for 300 days a year, would ever cease, she said no.
``I can't afford to can I?'' she said.
``I won't get sick of it but I am getting older and there will be a time when I can no longer travel 300 days a year.
``I can't actually stop until we've saved the world so that means I can never stop until I die.''

Dieren krijgen mogelijk eigen publieke omroep

29-09-2008 Algemeen Dagblad

Kroatisch muziek project 'Aid Band for Animals' voor bouw dierenasiels

PROJECT I LOVE ANIMALS

First Croatian Aid Band For Animals Forms

Dragojevic, Cetinski, Massimo, Spalato, Maja Vucic, Iva Bagic and Ines Bojanic are only some of the famous to join this project.

29-09-2008 Javno, Croatia

The association “Friends of Animals” has announced their big project “I Love Animals” (Ja Volim Zivotinje) and a band aid (a group of people forming a humaitarian band) with numerous well known Croatian performers.

The text and music for the song “No Excuse” (Nema Isprike) was written by the singer-songwriter Lea Dekleva, who, together with Isabel Bonyaj, are the founders of this humane idea. Together with Croatian singers and actors, Lea will give her voice for the protction and rights of animals. The music-video for the song will be recorded and produced by Vanja Vascarac.

The project “I Love Animals” is of a humanitarian character. Its aim, besides turning attention to the protection and rights of animals, is to build sanctuaries for mistreated animals.

BEAUTIFUL WITHOUT FUR Following the footsteps of world celebrities that took their clothes off for PETA campaigns, Croatian model Fani Stipkovic undressed for the campaign of `Friends of Animals` association called /For Croatia Without Fur`. The nude model and dog Sauri found themselves on jumbo posters throughout the country, raising awareness of all of those who find a piece of torn fur fro ma dead animal to be a fashion expression and a symbol of prestige.

The first Croatian band aid for animals includes the people: Oliver Dragojevic, Toni Cetinski, Massimo Savic, Tedi Spalato, Jelena Radan, Maja Vucic, Tina Vukov, Lea Dekleva, Ines Bojanic, Leona Paraminski, Marko Tolja, Iva Bagic, Popper and many others.

All members of the band aid will sing the song “No Excuse” without being paid for it, with the wish to do something for the better relations between people and animals with the hope of a better futurge of all inhabitants of the planet.

Considering that greater awareness concerning animals rights is needed in Croatia, and that there are a great number of abused animals with examples that shock and scare, the project “I Love Animals” and the song “No Excuse” has appeeared as hope for all of those who can not stand up for themselves.

With their positive stance, they want to prompt everyone to make a change in their behavior towards animals, as well as help in the construction of a sanctuary for abused animals, in order to get at least a bit of respect and love after their pain and suffering.

Eindelijk is vergunning varkenstransporteur Vaex (Reek, Noord-Brabant) ingetrokken na zoveelste 'incident'...

Vergunning transporteur ingetrokken

29-09-2008 Algemeen Dagblad

(ANP)

HLS & NYSE Shareholders have more protests

28-09-2008 SHAC, IndyMedia UK

With the world of finance far calmer than this time last week, our demos did not generate such a big external interest as then, but we were still outside the same companies shaming them for their involvement in the torture of animals inside the razor wire of Huntingdon Life Sciences. We targetted Barclays, Axa and Merrill Lynch to demonstrate against.

We started our day of demos at Barclays at 1-7 King Street. This is not only a Barclays branch, but also a good deal of Barclays offices are based here. We covered both the staff and branch entrances which really seemed to irritate the Barclays security. He even said "I'm watching you!"... ooh we're scared!! We stayed at this disgusting multinational, who have large numbers of shares in both HLS and NYSE Euronext, for just over an hour before moving onto the next one.
Merrill Lynch, following last week's takeover, was tactically chosen to be our next demonstration. We wanted to make it very clear to the new management that if you deal with HLS you deal with us! Merrill Lynch have about 11,000 shares in HLS itself and have a large number of shares in NYSE Euronext as well. We stayed at this location for about three quarters of an hour.
Almost opposite Merrill Lynch is Axa, the second largest shareholder in NYSE Euronext with approximately half a billion dollars worth of shares! That means a whole lot of influence if they decide to use it. HLS would be history if Axa so much as mentioned it to NYSE Euronext, but they are far too interested in money to even consider making such an ethical step as that. A couple of members of staff actually came to talk to the protest group, insisting that their 7,000 HLS shares had been sold, but we are far more interested in their NYSE Euronext shares. Sell those and the demos stop. In fact, sell those and we'll bake them a nice vegan cake!!!

We ended the demonstrations at Barclays on Fleet Street. This branch absolutely loves the demonstrations outside and we didn't disappoint. As with the other 3 demos, we used megaphones to tell the staff and all around that they're dealing with torture and death with their dealing with HLS.

70,000 animals are in there because of greedy companies like these 3 today. No customers, no suppliers, no shareholders:

NO HLS!
Until next time,

Australische oppositie stelt vragen over lidmaatschap Eritrea International Whaling Commission - Japan zou stemmen gekocht hebben

Protest at Eritrea's whale vote

29-09-2008 Andrew Darby in Hobart, The Sydney Morning Herald, Australia

THE Federal Opposition has called on the Rudd Government to tackle Japan about alleged vote-buying in the International Whaling Commission following the recruitment of strife-torn Eritrea to the organisation.

Eritrea joins Tanzania and the Republic of Congo as recent members of the 82-nation IWC.
All three African countries joined talks in Tokyo in March, which a Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement said then were aimed at "obtaining understanding for Japan's position on sustainable whaling".

Kraaijer: 'Suriname is also one of the small member countries within the IWC who supports Japan in the commission. In exchange Japan has financed two fisherycentres in Suriname.'

The Opposition environment spokesman, Greg Hunt, said IWC vote buying was unacceptable.
"Mr Rudd should take the issue of vote buying directly to the Japanese," he said yesterday. "His concern about whaling appears to have evaporated from the day he became Prime Minister."
A spokesman for the Environment Minister, Peter Garrett, said Australia would welcome the opportunity to meet new IWC member countries and discuss recent developments in cetacean science.

Eritrea is a single-party state accused by neighbouring Ethiopia this month of training and arming terrorists. It is ranked 157th out of 177 nations in the UN Human Development Index and 126th on Transparency International's Global Corruption Index.

"We do not know their views on whales, or why a small, desperately poor country, where 80 per cent of the population is involved in farming and herding, would want to join the IWC, although it is not hard to guess" said John Frizell, of Greenpeace International.

Meanwhile there is little evidence that an attempt to find a consensus on the future of the IWC is progressing. A meeting of inner-circle IWC nations, including Australia, in Florida is understood to have developed a list of divisive issues for further meetings to consider.

Dozens of dead animals on farm

28-09-2008 BBC News, UK

More than one hundred animals have been removed

The USPCA have rescued more than 100 animals from an open farm. Officials from the charity found more than 60 dead animals in Littleacre Open Farm in Loughbrickland, County Down.

Investigators found dozens of rotten carcasses including guinea pigs, rabbits, a peacock and a goat on Saturday evening.

They returned on Sunday morning to remove the remaining animals. Many were sick as a result of what the charity describe as "appalling neglect".
Roosters, pheasants and a llama were among the animals transported to USPCA shelters.
The owners of the farm have not commented.

Verslag eerste actiedag SHAC-Nederland tegen klanten dierproefcentrum Huntingdon Life Sciences

Dutch day of protests against HLS

27-09-2008 SHAC UK

Friday, 26th September saw the rebirth of SHAC Netherlands with a full day of protest at HLS customers. We kicked off around 7:30 AM at the Dutch HQ of Novartis in Arnhem. On arrival, we greeted their workers in the usual hard hitting SHAC way.
This disgusting company is a longstanding client of Huntingdon Life Sciences and one of their biggest at that. Annually, they are responsible for the death of 800,000 animals, both killed at their own sick laboratories and at Huntingdon. They also falsify research results on a regular basis and are investigated for multiple accounts of bribing doctors. We exposed and confronted these sickos once again telling them we will never look the other way whilst defenceless animals die inside HLS. Cut your ties!

Next stop was Actelion at their office in Woerden. Actelion Pharma has used HLS several times in 2005 for sick and perverse experiments and it is likely they continued to do business with HLS since then. These animal abusing cowards rarely show their faces when we are here. It sure does show how proud you are of what you do, Actelion, now doesn't it? Or are you just too weak to face us? Either way, it doesn't exactly give the impression that you've got nothing to hide. We KNOW about your disgusting secret. Paying HLS to torture and murder innocent animals is unforgivable and an absolute disgrace. We'll be back before you know it, Actelion. Drop HLS!

A few streets further down the road it was time to confront Bristol Myers Squibb at their main site in Woerden for their on-going dealings with HLS. Being a large customer, they are responsible for a great deal of the misery and suffering that animals face inside HLS on a daily basis.
Brystol Myers weren't exactly happy to see us. Beforehand they had complained to the authorities trying to prevent any demonstration in front of their building. It was all in vain; we were there and our message was load and clear as it always has been. Fighting companies like yours, Brystol Myers workers, is both our right and our duty. It is what we owe to the animals inside HLS whose own voices and cries cannot be heard. We'll return at your sites as long as it takes, Brystol Myers Squibb. Deal with Huntingdon, deal with us!

Seeing as we had some extra time left we decided to surprise HLS supplier Phenomonex with an unannounced visit. They provide HLS with specialized products and services, some of which are not produced by any other company. Legal documents show that for daily operations to run smoothly, HLS relies on Phenomonex. Whereas on the other hand, Phenomonex doesn't need HLS at all. We went over there to tell them to end their contractual relationships with Huntingdon and explained why it would be a wise decision for them to drop HLS instantly. If you continue to support HLS, we'll be coming for you, Phenomonex!

We ended the day at the largest HLS client off all; GlaxoSmithKline. This greedy company and their workers were named and shamed on their way out. There is absolutely no excuse for what you do to innocent animals, Glaxo. All you GSK workers are aware of what goes on inside HLS. You all KNOW perfectly well how beagle pups get punched in the face. You all KNOW how monkeys are strapped down and cut open; how they are poisoned without anaesthetic and ultimately killed. You knowingly and willingly contribute to the animal abuse inside HLS! At GlaxoSmithKline there is no ethics, no compassion. No respect for life.

It must not be a surprise that this company has been facing numerous charges regarding severe adverse drug reactions of their products, leading do death in young adults. Their antidepressant drug Paxil was found extremely unsafe and led to an increase in suicidal tendencies among adolescents using it. Unreliable animal experiments and withholding of research results are the two main causes for these unsafe drugs to reach the market. It's awfully clear what your true motives are Glaxo; it's solely about careers and money. We will never tolerate how you profit off the animal slaughter inside Huntingdon Life Sciences.

Until next time!

Humpback whale rescued off Gold Coast

27-09-2008 By Penny Brand and Nadine McGrath, Adelaide Now, Australia

A YOUNG adult humpback whale which become entangled in shark control netting on the Gold Coast this morning has been released by animal rescuers. The nine-metre whale was spotted caught in the netting off Tugun Beach about 8.30am (AEST).

The whale was freed almost seven hours later by rescuers from the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries Marine Animal Release Team (MART).
a DPI&F spokeswoman said the whale was "fine'' as it swam away from rescuers.
"The whale is healthy and strong so that is good news,'' she said.

DPI&F Acting Shark Control Program Manager Rick Exten said the MART team was alerted by the Surf Lifesaving Queensland Control Centre this morning.
Mr Exten said the rescue effort took longer than usual because of a strong and very active whale which continued to swim during the rescue.

Whale entanglements were anticipated at this time of year as the whale population started its homeward return to southern waters, he said.

Shark control gear was introduced in the early 1960s in response to a spate of fatal shark attacks off Queensland beaches.
The gear, which includes shark nets and drum lines, is in place off 87 Queensland beaches.

Since 2000, 23 whales have been caught in shark netting in Queensland and 20 have been successfully freed by MART, which is based on the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Mackay.

Anyone who spots a whale or other marine animals tangled in fishing gear or shark netting should call the 24-hour Shark Hotline on 1800 806 891.

Campaign to highlight animal killings launched

27-09-2008 By Alethea Reynolds, Famagusta Gazette, Cyprus

The Cyprus Green Party is attempting to highlight the shocking amount of animals that are deliberately poisoned and killed every year in Cyprus. The party has declared a “week against animal poisonings” to take place from September 27th – October 5th.

According to the Greens, 10,000 dogs and cats are killed every year on the island. The campaign starts this morning and the party has set up stall on Makarios Avenue in Nicosia and are handing out public awareness leaflets to inform the public of the horrifying situation.

In April animal rights campaigners welcomed the news that the deadly Lannate poison will cease to be sold in Cyprus from early next year. EU lawmakers have decided that Lannate must be taken off shop shelves by March 2009. The deadly substance, which is freely available in Cyprus, has been responsible for the deaths of thousands of domestic pets and wild animals over the past few years.

Lannate poison was introduced to American farmers in 1970 and was quickly exported worldwide due to the fact that it had a "90% kill rate" (compared with 50% to DDT).It quickly became a restricted chemical in most parts of the world because of its high oral toxicity. Most animals that lick or eat food tainted with the drug die an agonizing death which can last from a few minutes up to five hours.

Anti-bont protest in Londen (Engeland) tegen bekend warenhuis Harrods

Anti-fur campaigners set to protest

27-09-2008 Chorley Today, UK

Anti-fur campaigners are marching in protest against some of the UK's highest-profile stores. The London march will pass designer outlets including Gucci, Prada, Versace, Armani and Burberry before stopping outside department store Harrods.

Organisers CAFT (Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade) said the protest was focusing on "some of the most notorious retailers and designers of fur".

CAFT said Harrods was the only department store in the UK still selling real fur.

Farming and trapping animals for fur is illegal in the UK, but fur can be imported legally and sold in UK stores. CAFT is calling for the importation of fur products to be banned and has urged the public to boycott all stores that continue to sell the product.

CAFT-protest on December 1st 2007

Department stores Harvey Nichols, Selfridges and Liberty have all banned the sale of fur in recent years. The march will start with a rally including a speech from Green Party deputy leader Adrian Ramsay.

Tory animal spokesman is bitten by ape

27-09-2008 By Aidan Mcgurran, The Mirror, UK

We know we shouldn't laugh but.. A barbary ape showed what she thought of the Tories' would-be minister for animal welfare... by sinking her teeth into his arm. Andrew Rosindell got a sound bite with a difference when he wandered too close to one of Gibraltar's famous monkeys as she nursed her baby.

The concerned beast gave the 42-year-old MP for Romford a clear sign he wasn't welcome.
But the former PR man refused to take the hint and paid the price.
He said sheepishly: "It firstly tugged at my sleeve to say clear off. Then about 10 seconds later it went for me.
"It bit me on my left arm. There was a lot of blood, it was quite bad."

The shaken "animal expert", who was by himself at Britain's historic outpost in the Mediterranean, leapt into a cable car and rushed to hospital.
He had a tetanus jab to beat any infection and his arm bandaged, adding: "There's quite a scar now. It was probably equivalent to a dog bite. But they don't carry rabies or anything.
"I've got up close to all sorts of animals. But they've never bit me."

There are some 230 so-called Barbary apes on the Rock of Gibraltar and they are Europe's only primates.
The creatures are not technically apes at all, but macaque monkeys.
But at the sight of a Tory MP some are clearly capable of going ape.

Bahamas Government urged to pass legislation

to stop the killing and torture of sea turtles in

The Bahamas

26-09-2008 By Jane Mather, The Bahamas Sea Turtle Conservation Group, The Bahamas Weekly

Dear Editor - The Bahamas Sea Turtle Conservation Group’s campaign to ban the killing of sea turtles in The Bahamas is gaining momentum, says Jane Mather, president of Advocate for Animal Rights, one of the group’s organizers.

According to Mather, “We recently launched a redesigned Internet site (http://saveourseaturtles.com/) to support our international advertising and turtle awareness program that is reaching millions of Internet users around the world.”Our site includes new information about sea turtles, interesting articles, photos showing the inhumane treatment of these magnificent creatures, and links to other sites.

Mather says more than 5,000 people have so far signed an online petition (on http://care2petition.com/ ) to end the sea turtle killings and nearly 230,000 people have seen our online ad campaign. Bumper stickers are being seen ever more frequently on cars around The Bahamas saying, "Stop the Killing" of sea turtles. Mather also outlined that press releases are being sent out worldwide and covered on environmental web sites to bring attention to the cruelty that is taking place in The Bahamas. She hopes the information and photos on the new Internet site will inform the public of the cruelty that is taking place in tourist oriented destinations like The Bahamas, and shock people to create a chain reaction leading to a worldwide ban on the killing of sea turtles.

According to Kim Aranha, President of The Bahamas Humane Society, the drive to save sea turtles is gaining momentum.

Most recently, the Bahamas National Trust added its voice to the call for a total ban on harvesting sea turtles, and thousands of people have signed a petition demanding swift government action to end the cruelty.

In a press release issued on Sept 18, the Bahamas National Trust said it "joins the Bahamas Sea Turtle Conservation Group, The Nature Conservancy, The Bahamas Humane Society, Friends of the Environment and BREEF in the call for a total ban on the harvesting of sea turtles in The Bahamas." Mather says Bahamas fisheries laws still allow the catching and slaughter of certain turtles, even though the country is a party to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), which calls on member states to protect all marine turtles as endangered or threatened.

According to Mather, “One of the conditions of being a signatory to CITES states that the signing country is obliged to change their current legislation to conform to the obligations of the convention.”The Bahamas is also a signatory to the Convention on Biological Diversity, which commits The Bahamas to avoid the extinction of any more Bahamian species.

Nine sea turtles have been rescued from fishermen over the past couple of years, rehabilitated and returned to the sea. But fishermen are still catching turtles knowing that conservationists will buy them in order to release them.

Other organizing members of the Bahamas Sea Turtle Conservation Group include Deborah Krukoski, vice president of Animals Require Kindness (ARK) and Kim Aranha, president of The Bahamas Humane Society. Several other organizations actively support the new group, including Proud Paws, ReEarth, Earth Care, Young Bahamian Marine Scientists, the Freeport Humane Society, Friends of the Environment in Abaco and many more.

The Bahamas Sea Turtle Conservation Group urges all members of the public to visit their web site at http://saveourseaturtles.com/ and sign the petition urging government to stop the killing of sea turtles in The Bahamas.

SHAC-Nederland demonstreert bij GlaxoSmithKline in Zeist....

GlaxoSmithkline in Huis ter Heide kreeg vandaag

bezoek van aktievoerders tegen dierproeven

26-09-2008 nn IndyMedia

video

Romanian hunters now allowed to shoot

urban bears

26-09-2008 The Associated Press, International Herald Tribune, France

BUCHAREST, Romania: Romanian authorities have decided to let hunters shoot bears that are increasingly moving into urban areas to find food. Some of the animals have become tame, allowing tourists to take close-up photographs. But a few months ago a bear killed a man in the city of Brasov.

Environment Minister Attila Korodi said Thursday that he authorized hunting associations to shoot the bears in areas frequented by tourists in Brasov and the Prahova valley.

Authorities say they are monitoring some 800 bears in the Brasov area, 100 more than last year.
Romania is home to 60 percent of the bears in the European Union.

Vietnamese police arrest man with tiger skeleton

in car

26-09-2008 by Mohit Joshi, Top News, India

Hanoi - Hanoi police have arrested a man who was found illegally transporting a tiger skeleton in his car, a police official said Friday. Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Van Hung said police had been tipped off by an informant who identified the arrestee as a dealer in tiger bones for use in traditional oriental medicine.

When police stopped the suspect's car, they found a tiger skeleton in it.
The 36-kilogram skeleton is believed to have belonged to a tiger weighing some 400 kilograms, and would have been boiled down into tiger-bone paste for sale on the black market.

According to government customs officer Nguyen Thi Lan, 1 kilogram of tiger bone paste sells for 800 to 1,000 dollars.

Police said the suspect, Nguyen Phuc Nguyen, 44, from the central province of Nghe An, declared he had been hired to transport the skeleton from Nghe An to Hanoi for sale by a man named Chinh.

The police said they were pursuing an investigation to find out who had hired Nguyen.
Illegal smuggling of tigers for use in the traditional medicine trade is widespread in Vietnam. In June, Hanoi police arrested a wildlife smuggler as he was preparing to cook a tiger carcass in his apartment.

All tiger species are endangered, and less than 100 of the cats are believed to survive in the wild in Vietnam, where habitat loss and poaching have taken a heavy toll on endangered flora and fauna in recent decades.
According to Vietnamese law, those hunting, transporting or trading in rare animals will be subject to a prison term of up to seven years and a cash fine of up to 1,250 dollars. (dpa)

Plannen wekelijkse veemarkt Apeldoorn 'heilloos initiatief' en 'onzalig' aldus Dierenbescherming

Woede over veemarkt

Police offer £40,000 to animal rights protesters

Compensation for activists prevented from attending demonstration

25-09-2008 By Cahal Milmo and Kate Mead, The Independent, UK

A police force has offered £40,000 in compensation to animal rights campaigners, including supporters of the Animal Liberation Front (ALF), after they were prevented from joining a protest against livestock exports.

The group of London-based protesters, representing several animal rights groups, accused Kent police of heavy-handed tactics after their coach was stopped as it entered Dover in July 2006 en route to a demonstration against the shipping of sheep and cattle to the Continent.

The campaigners, who included a disabled boy and several elderly people, claimed they were threatened with arrest after leaving the vehicle to plead their case with police. They were photographed before being escorted back to London by two police cars and two motorcycles.

Now lawyers for Kent police have offered each of the 32 protesters £1,250 in an out-of-court settlement following a claim brought against the force alleging that the group was unlawfully denied the right to protest. The case was brought by the law firm Irwin Mitchell, which has brought several previous prominent human rights cases, including the provision of the breast cancer drug Herceptin to NHS patients.

The animal rights proceedings are the latest in a catalogue of legal complaints about the policing of demonstrations, including the May Day protests in central London and the decision to prosecute Maya Evans, a vegan cook who was arrested in 2005 for reading out a list of Britain's dead from the Iraq war underneath the Cenotaph.

One of the animal rights campaigners, Adrian Appley, 65, from Bromley in Kent, who contributes financially to the work of the ALF, said: "The way in which we were treated was disgraceful. The police pulled us over by claiming that coach was not roadworthy but it rapidly became clear that they did not want to let us reach the protest.
"At first we were told that we could demonstrate for half an hour. But 10 minutes later we were all told to get back on the coach and anyone refusing to do so would be arrested. The police started filming everyone on board the coach and when one of our group tried to get off he was forcibly prevented from doing so.
"We were then escorted all the way back up the motorway to London and told that we could not turn off the motorway at any point for water or toilet breaks on one of the hottest days of the year. It was a ridiculous situation – most of us were middle-aged or elderly and we had all come to exercise our democratic right to stage a peaceful protest."

Mr Appley said he and several other members of the group were supporters but not active members of the ALF, the extremist anti-vivisection group which advocates the infliction of "economic damage on those who profit from the misery and exploitation of animals". The organisation officially condemns violence but breakaway members have been associated with a succession of high-profile attacks since the early 1980s.

A spokeswoman for Kent police confirmed it was holding talks about an out-of-court settlement. She said: "Negotiations are still ongoing and we are unable to say anything more until everything has been settled."

Tainted milk sickens baby animals at Chinese zoo

SHANGHAI, China - China's milk crisis apparently has spread to animals. Three baby animals at the Hangzhou Safari Park near Shanghai have kidney stones after being fed milk powder for more than a year, said Zhang Xu, a veterinarian with the Hangzhou Zhangxu Animal Hospital.

The two orangutans and a lion cub were found with kidney stones Wednesday after concerned officials sent them to Zhang for a checkup.

The powder was made by the Sanlu Group Co., which is at the center of the tainted milk crisis. The industrial chemical melamine has been found in a growing range of Chinese-made dairy products, and it has been blamed for sickening 53,000 infants in China and killing four.

"The milk powder crisis made us very worried about the health situation of baby animals," Ju Lijia, the animal park's public affairs manager, said by phone Wednesday. "We stopped feeding with Sanlu after it was found to be tainted."

The orangutans and lion were the only ones found with kidney stones, Ju said. Officials at the Beijing Zoo and zoos in the other major cities of Shanghai, Guangzhou and Xian said they had no cases of animals sickened from milk powder.

An official at the world's most famous panda reserve, the Wolong Nature Reserve, said the baby pandas there are not fed on milk made from formula. - AP

VVD-Kamerlid Henk Kamp: 'Buitenlandse SHAC-leden als ongewenste vreemdeling verklaren.'.....

Euronext schroeft bewaking op

25-09-2008 BNR.nl

Mexico seizes circus animals after elephant escape

25-09-2008 The Associates Press

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico has seized 12 animals from a circus a day after one of its elephants wandered onto a highway and was struck and killed by a bus.

Mexico's Environmental Protection office says the two Asian elephants and 10 Siberian tigers were not properly contained and were at risk of escaping.

A man stands next to a dead elephant after it was hit by a passenger bus on the outskirts of Mexico City, early Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008. The five-ton elephant escaped from a circus and wandered onto a busy highway, where it was hit by a bus and died on Tuesday. State officials said bus driver also was killed and at least four passengers were hospitalized. (AP Photo)

The office said Wednesday in a statement that inspectors found the elephants tied to the tire of a trailer. Doors on several of the trailers also lacked proper locks.

On Tuesday, a five-ton elephant named Indra escaped the circus, wandered onto a highway outside Mexico City and was hit by a bus carrying 41 passengers. The driver and the pachyderm died.
Mexican media reported that the elephant escaped as its keeper arrived to feed it.

SHAC Nederland start actiecampagne tegen klanten van HLS - Telegraaf stigmatiseert dierenactivisten en bericht ongenuanceerd

Extreme dierenactivisten dreigen met acties

tegen beurs

Campagne tegen ziek kalfsvlees in kalfsdichtste land

ter wereld

Bloedarmoede miljoen kalfjes aangepakt

25-09-2008 Wakker Dier

Vanaf 2009 knippen hoektanden biggen verboden

Knippen hoektanden varkens mag niet meer

24-09-2008 Reformatorisch Dagblad

Local foundation nabs $18.8 million grant

24-09-2008 Cindy Tumiel - Express-News, USA

Baboons and people have a lot in common. The dog-faced animals can overeat, get fat and develop heart disease. They can suffer from anxiety disorders and epilepsy. Females go through menopause and their bones weaken as they age.

Baboons are seen recently at the
Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research.

Their similarities to people have made them important models for scientists working to understand a wide range of human diseases, from diabetes to osteoporosis to depression.

Now San Antonio's Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research, home to the world's largest colony of research baboons, has been awarded an $18.8 million federal grant to continue ongoing studies and launch new projects to further explore genetic and dietary influences on cardiovascular disease.

The award from the National Institutes of Health is the largest research grant in the foundation's history, said John VandeBerg, its chief scientific officer and the lead investigator on the grant.
It will allow scientists to capitalize on new technology and launch new approaches to identifying genes that make some people more prone to cardiovascular disease. Studies could open the door to new medications, but more importantly to prevention programs that are tailored to an individual's genetic profile, VandeBerg said.

“If you could single out individual people early in life and say, you have genes that make you very susceptible to developing heart disease, I think people would be much more open to understanding that they have a special risk,” he said.

New studies will target genes regulating the endothelial cells that line blood vessels and where fatty plaques of heart disease form. VandeBerg will use baboons to search for genes that control how endothelial cells respond to risk factors like cholesterol and the chemical byproducts of tobacco smoke. He also will study the genes influencing a type of adult stem cell that protects against the formation of arterial plaques.

Other scientists will use liver and blood samples to track the influence of high and low-fat diets on the animals, then use that information to identify the network of genes involved. Researchers hope to understand why some people are more sensitive to poor diets than others, said Laura Cox, a lead scientist in the project.
“We want to look at what happens when people have a poor response to a high-fat diet,” she said.

The foundation began studying baboons in 1972 as a way to understand cardiovascular disease in people. As knowledge of the animals grew, so did their importance as a model for a range of human diseases.

The foundation now is home to the Southwest National Primate Research Center, which houses 2,700 baboons. About 1,200 of them are in a pedigreed colony for which scientists have kept detailed breeding, genetic and health information going back seven generations.

Makili slams church over dolphin facility

24-09-2008 Solomon Star News, Solomon Islands

Outspoken environmental campaigner Lawrence Makili has criticised the Church of Melanesia for allowing a new dolphin pen to be established on its island in the Central Province. Mr Makili said one of the five dolphin licence holders is building a new dolphin facility on the Bungana Island, which is owned by the church.

“I’ am very surprised the church would allow such undertakings where these harmless animals would be imprisoned from their original wild home,” he said. He said if God made animals to be taken care of by man, then man is responsible for the harmless creatures.

He said the church should not entertain such development on its island, which would see dolphins imprisoned.“I urge the church of Melanesian to reverse its decision in allowing the dolphin dealer to erect another prison for the innocent and friendly dolphins on the Bungana Island,” he said.

Another Dolphin pen in the Central Islands province is on the Gavutu Island. Many of the dolphins kept on Gavutu have been exported to overseas.

Church of Melanesia’s Deputy Secretary William Miki said the island is owned by the Diocese of Central Solomons and not the Church of Melanesia.“We have no idea about the development because we have no authority over the island, but the diocese of central Solomons is responsible,” he said.

Attempts to talk to responsible authorities from the Church of Melanesia's Diocese of Central Solomons were unsuccessful.

Exotic snakes, spiders in baby package

24-09-2008 Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia

A CUSTOMS raid has been carried out on a Sydney home after five exotic snakes and two spiders were found being smuggled into Australia inside a package. Officers X-rayed a package which had been declared as containing baby toys and T-shirts, sent by air from the US, at a freight depot in Mascot last Friday.

When the X-ray indicated different items to that stated, officers opened the package and discovered brightly-coloured snakes wrapped in white calico bags, and spiders packed in clear plastic containers.
The snakes were later identified as being two green tree pythons, two royal pythons and one reticulated python.

Two of the confiscated snakes. Photo: Australian Customs Service

The spiders were South American tarantulas.
Because the snakes and spiders posed a potential quarantine risk, they were euthanased.

Customs investigators and NSW Police yesterday executed seizure warrants at a Cambridge Gardens house in Sydney's west.
Customs national investigations manager Richard Janeczko said ``customs investigators seized evidence at the address and charges are expected to be laid in the near future''.

Under the terms of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, it is illegal to import regulated live specimens into Australia without permits.
The maximum penalty for offences under this act is 10 years' imprisonment or a fine of $110,000 or both.

Mr Janeczko said wildlife smuggling was the third largest international criminal enterprise after drugs and weapons.

And Australian wildlife - being unique - is particularly valuable to investors, with some native lizards and snakes worth up to $20,000 each on the international market.
Just last week Customs had arrested and charged three men for attempting to smuggle lizards out of Western Australia.
``These lizards are quite rare. They are located on Rottnest Island (off Perth). That's the only place where they actually exist,'' he said.
``Then there was the classic case where it was published in a scientific magazine that a new kind of gecko was found in a desert in South Australia,'' he said.
``Within a week we had a German wildlife smuggler, who advertises his goods internationally, in Australia and we caught him trying to smuggle one out.
``There's huge demand for this stuff and people range from amateur enthusiasts down to outright criminals.'' Australian Customs would typically make a wildlife seizure once a month, Mr Janeczko said.

``We have 'budgie smugglers' who bring in eggs in their underwear and we also get a lot of people who try to distance themselves from the crime by using express mail,'' he said.
``But we have a lot of technology and really good people who can not only use intelligence with other agencies, but we have overseas posts to keep us informed of potential smugglers bringing animals into Australia or smuggling them out.''

He described wildlife smuggling as a ``cruel trade''.
``These enthusiasts and collectors aren't really friends of wildlife or they wouldn't subject these animals to the cruelty, the high percentage of deaths and the damage to the environment,'' he said.
``For a lot of the smugglers, the bottom line is money.''

Natuurbeschermingsorganisatie Indonesië wil einde gebruik dieren in tv-programma's

Abuse of animals

23-09-2008 The Jakarta Post, Indonesia

I am the communications officer of a wildlife protection organization in Indonesia. With the support of members across Indonesia, our organization is working to save wildlife through campaigns, education programs, investigations and animal rescue.

I would like to draw The Jakarta Post readers' attention to the frequent abuse of domesticated and wild animals by a number of national television stations.

It seems to have become a new trend to include animals on TV shows. In Trans TV's, Happy Family, a game show involving celebrities and their mothers, animals (including cats, mice, house lizards, snakes and many more) are often used.
These animals are used to frighten people, for example celebrities throw animals at their mothers.

Similar abuse occurs on a candid camera type show that has often used animals (crocodile, turkey, long-tailed monkeys, etc.) to frighten people.
On Trans 7, Empat Mata Sahur, used a saltwater crocodile. This is a protected species and its use violates Indonesian law.

Please readers, send letters to the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI), demanding KPI warn television stations to stop using animals, especially protected species.

Primatenonderzoekscentrum BPRC Rijswijk krijgt medio 2009 150 ongewenste Java apen van Universiteit Utrecht - ADC: 'Overplaatsing onacceptabel'

MEER APEN VOOR HET BPRC

23-09-2008 Anti Dierproeven Coalitie

Canned lion hunting on the increase

23-09-2008 By Richard Davies, The South African, UK

Most of the more than 700 lions shot and killed in South Africa by foreign hunters last year were “captive bred” animals, the department of environmental affairs confirmed on Tuesday.

It was reacting to an earlier statement by Animal Rights Africa (ARA), which warned that “since 2005, the number of lions killed by the canned predator industry has doubled”.

The department said lions were not listed as “large predators” under current Threatened or Protected Species Regulations (TOPS).“The regulation of prohibited activities involving listed large predators is thus not applicable to lions... Most of the lions hunted during 2007 were captive bred lions,” director regulation and monitoring services Bonani Madikizela said in an e-mail sent to Sapa.

According to a recent written reply by Environment Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk to a parliamentary question, a total of 702 lions were “hunted by foreign clients in each province in 2007”. The majority, 637, were killed in North West province.

Earlier on Tuesday, ARA said canned lion hunting - a controversial practice whereby animals are bred and raised in captivity before being released onto game farms to be shot by hunters - was growing rapidly.

“The general public, both local and international, cannot be criticised for thinking canned hunting is a thing of the past. But nothing can be further from the truth. Far from being controlled, the canned hunting industry... is growing exponentially,” the NGO said. Madikizela said a decision was taken by his department late last year to “temporarily exclude” lions from the TOPS definition of large predators, following legal action from the SA Predator Breeders Association (SAPBA).

“It was decided that by changing the definition, the implementation of the Threatened or Protected Species Regulations will not be jeopardised, as SAPBA wanted to stop the implementation of TOPS,” he said.

Last year, Van Schalkwyk announced the regulations, which he said were aimed at “putting an end, once and for all, to the reprehensible practice of canned hunting”. They originally sought to outlaw the hunting of captive-bred large predators, including lions, within two years of their release on a property for the purpose of hunting.

According to Van Schalkwyk’s reply to the parliamentary question, tabled in August, foreign hunters last year also hunted and killed, among other animals, 27 elephant, 56 hippo and 156 white rhino. Also included on the list of hunted species were 15 yellow mongoose, a scrub and grasslands mammal that weighs about 500g, four aardwolf and 370 vervet monkeys. Sapa

Australia: Outrage over sheep truck deaths

23-09-2008 CNN Asia

(CNN) -- Australian animal protection activists repeated their calls Tuesday for an end to the long-distance transport of livestock after 400 sheep died in a wreck. A truck carrying the sheep lost control in wet conditions Monday evening and overturned near Corowa, about 310 miles (500 km) southwest of Sydney, police in New South Wales said.

About 300 sheep were killed in the crash; another 100 were put down because of their injuries, police said.
The driver and his 10-year-old son were also hurt.

Handle With Care, an international coalition of animal protection groups, said the crash highlighted the "risks inherent in transporting animals."
"Minimizing the distance animals need to travel on the road reduces the risks to their welfare," said spokesman Hugh Wirth in a statement.

The group said that a spate of crashes have occurred in recent months at a time when the international community has called on Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's government to end the live export of animals for slaughter.

Australia exports livestock to more than two dozen countries, primarily in the Middle East and Asia. Some journeys take up to 35 days from the time sheep leave the farm until the arrive at their destination, the group said.
Many die during the sea voyage, often because they are given an unfamiliar pellet diet -- their only source of food, it said.
Others die in crashes or due to disease.

The primarily Muslim countries that import the sheep slaughter them in accordance with Islamic guidelines -- a halal slaughter is carried out with a single cut to the animal's throat so that death occurs from blood loss.

Handle With Care wants the government to expand the trade in chilled and frozen meat from Halal-certified slaughterhouses in Australia.
"Where animals need to be transported we must ensure that these journeys are kept to a minimum," Wirth said.

Dierenbescherming en Milieudefensie protesteren tegen bouw mega kippenboerderij Middenmeer - Bedrijf wil 1,6 miljoen slachtkippen houden....

Protest tegen megastal in Noord-Holland

23-09-2008 Agrarisch Dagblad

Vleeskuikens in bio-industrie

Huge pig removed after spat with woman

23-09-2008 The Age, Australia

Bruce, the 80kg house guest who made a pig of himself, has been found a new home after wearing out his welcome on small northern NSW farm. Even though Bruce became quite aggressive, trapping her inside her house and causing a bit of property damage, Caroline Hayes did not want him hurt and told council officers not to use a trap to catch him.

Ms Hayes has managed to save Bruce's bacon and he is being sent to a local piggery where he may even be given stud duties.

After Bruce stumbled into Ms Hayes's yard in Uki, south of Murwillumbah, about 10 days ago, she and some neighbours began feeding him, even cleaning up some wounds around his eyes.
But the 63-year-old said Bruce became more demanding, especially when it came to food.
"It started getting very pushy, started pushing me around, so I started to get a bit frightened, until the stage that it started knocking on my door at 4 o'clock in the morning, actually head butting my door," she told ABC Radio on Tuesday.

Ms Hayes said she had locked herself into her home on Monday afternoon and was too afraid to set foot outside until late on Tuesday morning.
She said the pig pushed her, snapped a broom in half with his mouth and pulled a mattress out of her garage, tearing it to shreds.
The pig will spend one more night at the property before it is removed by pest and animal health ranger Neil Hing.

Mr Hing, who works for the Rural Land Protection Board, said he thought the domestic pig was set free by his previous owners when he became too much to handle.
"Someone's got him as a little fella and they've fed him and kept him and all of a sudden he's a fat pig and he's started to cause a bit of drama around the place," he said.
"They've said, `we don't need this pig any more' and they've just let him go."
Mr Hing said the pig was about 12 months old and while he was not dangerous, he had the potential to be.
"They can become aggressive as they get a bit of age on them ... he could grow to ... 150kg," he said.

Mr Hing said he would speak with pig specialists later on Tuesday to devise a plan, but suggested the pig would be lured into a portable yard.
It would then be bound for a local piggery.

A Tweed Shire Council spokeswoman said two attempts had previously been made to remove Bruce, but Ms Hayes - who is "an animal lover and a vegetarian" - didn't want a trap to be used.
The spokeswoman also said that reports that Bruce was the size of a shetland pony were "incorrect".
Mr Hing asked people to stay away from the property to ensure the exercise runs smoothly.
"I'm just a little bit afraid that people get to know where the pig is and they'll want to go and chase him," he said.
"It just makes it a lot harder."

Inspectiedienst Dierenbescherming in actie tegen hondenhandelaar Huissen - Angstige golden retrievers in kassencomplex aangetroffen

'A black ocean' of mink

Roundup continues after release of 7,000 mink on Sunday morning

23-09-2008 By Mitch Shaw, Standard-Examiner Staff, USA

KAYSVILLE -- Minks released during a sabotage Sunday were fighting with each other through cage walls as they adjusted to their new neighbors Monday. Most had been recaptured after the weekend incident now being claimed by activists of the Animal Liberation Front.

Josh Lodder, a member of the family that owns the ranch, said early Sunday morning a worker at the mink farm in west Kaysville saw "the land as a black ocean" of mink.
Cages had been opened and holes had been cut in the ranch's perimeter fence late Saturday. About 7,000 escaped and about 6,000 were recaptured Sunday. Monday, Davis County Animal Control responded to multiple calls to pickup captured or hiding mink.

This is how a mink should live: in freedom!

Mink farm sabotage is misguided, said Lodder, even for an activist bent on animal freedom. He said sabotage hurts the animals themselves more than the mink rancher. The captive mink have never gathered food and water or swam, nor have they been exposed to pathogens they avoid on the cloistered ranch.
Most will be recaptured or die in the wild, he said.

As of Monday, about 90 percent had been recovered, Lodder said. Many released did not leave their cage and even more did not leave the ranch grounds.
"Their goal is to make you go broke, (but) no mink rancher goes broke because (most) mink don't go anywhere," Lodder said.
"It's a joke, a disaster and a mink rancher's worst nightmare. ... They kill the mink for a 10 percent loss and a headache (for the rancher). It doesn't make sense."

Jerry Vlasak is a spokesman for the North American Animal Liberation Press Office. On Monday, his office relayed to the media a communiqué they received supposedly from Animal Liberation Front activists.
"Three members of the Animal Liberation Front entered a massive mink prison in Kaysville, Utah," the communiqué states. "We found and destroyed all breeding records. We also vandalized the trucks and various forms of equipment, including destroying the electrical fence and cutting about a hundred holes in the fence's perimeter."

Vlasak said his office condones but does not coordinate or involve itself in such actions.
He said Lodder's explanation that almost all the released mink have been recovered and those that are not recovered will die is probably false and is definitely trite.
"That's typical for the fur industry," he said. "They always say the exact same thing."

Vlasak said released mink can thrive in nature. In the wild, mink are solitary, wetland animals.

Niki Harris reported the recaptured mink that had traveled the furthest -- over three miles -- from the Lodders' ranch. It was spotted hiding in the undercarriage of a vehicle by kids in the neighborhood. Not knowing of the incident, Harris thought it was a lost family pet and let it stay under the car while she took another vehicle grocery shopping.
When she came back, the mink was still hiding. She had since learned of the loose mink and called animal control.

This is the sixth mink farm sabotage in North America this year and the second in Utah reported by the office. Last month, around 300 mink were released from a farm in South Jordan, again by individuals claiming allegiance to the Animal Liberation Front.

Vlasak criticized the housing practices used at mink farms and also condemned the practice of caging wild animals forluxury fur garments.

At Lodder's ranch, each mink pair -- a brother and sister housed together from a young age -- shares a metal cage that is roughly 18 inches tall, 18 inches wide and 30 inches long. An adjoining "nest house" gives the creatures a small wooden box in which to cuddle and stay warm. Lodders have 18,000 mink on the farm.
Each cage is lined up against the other forming two long rows of cages, each in roughly 20 buildings.

The FBI learned that activists had claimed responsibility for the Lodder release from the media around 3 p.m. Monday. Juan Becerra, spokesman for the Salt Lake City field office of the FBI, said the information does not change their investigation.
"That (South Jordan) case continues to be investigated," he said. "Obviously this adds to our investigation, so we'll have to look into similarities."

Mink pelts are a $41 million per year industry in Utah, according to a news release from Fur Commission USA. There are 66 farms in Utah that raise more than 620,000 mink annually, the release states.

23-09-2008 The Courier Mail, Australia

SOME 400 sheep were killed and a truck driver and his son injured when the semi-trailer carrying them overturned in wet weather.

The stock transport truck was on the Mulwala-Barooga Road, after leaving the Corowa stockyards, in New South Wales when it left the road yesterday evening, police said.

"The rig came to rest across the east-bound lanes of the roadway," a spokesman said.
About 300 sheep were killed in the crash and another 100 animals had to be put down. Just 50 sheep survived.

The truck's 40-year-old driver, from Melbourne, suffered facial injuries while his 10-year-old son suffered suspected spinal and chest injuries.

Sea eagles blamed for lamb deaths

23-09-2008 By Rosamond Hutt, The Independent, UK

Scottish farmers are blaming sea eagles for the deaths of hundreds of lambs, it was reported today. The birds of prey were brought from Norway as chicks and raised in aviaries before being released into the wild in the north-west Highlands.

But according to the BBC, farmers in the area claim the eagles have killed more than 200 lambs and are calling for more to be done to tackle the problem.

The birds are being reintroduced by RSPB Scotland, SNH and the Forestry Commission as part of a five-year conservation project.
Fifteen white-tailed sea eagles were released last month and William Fraser, chairman of Gairloch and Poolewe branch of the Crofting Foundation, said he believed these birds were responsible for the killings.

Speaking to Radio 4's Farming Today, he said: "This year has been particularly bad. The crofters know how many lambs they put out after lambing season and one woman has lost 50% of her animals.
"She actually saw a sea eagle lifting a lamb from her field and flying off with it.
"We've had lambs that have had their necks sliced, they then can't lift them and are found going round in circles."

However, the RSPB told the BBC it had inspected one nest containing the remains of a number of lambs and said it did not believe the birds were behind all the deaths.

A spokesman for Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) told the Scotsman: "We are aware of these concerns and very surprised at the numbers being talked about. There is no doubt that they will take lambs, but usually dead or weak ones, and we've never heard of it being done on this scale."

Kitten Injured When Thrown From Building

Kitten To Undergo Hip Surgery

22-09-2008 WCVB Boston, USA

BOSTON -- A three-month-old kitten is awaiting hip surgery after someone threw her from the upper floor of a building, the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said Monday.

Lila, a brown tiger domestic short-hair kitten, needs surgery after the alleged abuse broke the top of her femur within her hip joint, leaving her with a visible limp. Lila will undergo a femoral head ostectemy surgery to repair her hip.

MSPCA officers removed Lila and another cat from the Lowell home. Investigators are trying to determine who threw the kitten from the building.
After Lila's surgery and recovery, she will be available for adoption.

Bengal tigers photographed battling over territory

22-09-2008 By Paul Eccleston, The Daily Telegraph, UK

Two rare Bengal tigers unleash their incredible killing power in a vicious dispute over territory.

Tigers given emergency dental treatment
BBC's elephant camera catches tiger cubs
Indian villages relocate to save Bengal Tiger

In a rarely glimpsed encounter the normally solitary animals find themselves stalking the same prey on a protected reserve.
Establishing a territory and the hunting rights that go with it are vital if a tiger is to avoid starving to death and competition cannot be tolerated.
A ferocious battle erupts and although it lasts only seconds both animals suffer wounds before they separate and slink back into the forest.

Amateur photographer and wildlife enthusiast M N Jayakumar, a government conservation officer in India's national parks for 30 years was on hand to capture the battle at Ranthambhore National Park, in the northern state of Rajasthan.

"I have been photographing animals for 15 years as a hobby and not once have I seen a sight like this," he said.
"Unlike lions, tigers are not social creatures and will go out of their way to avoid the company of their own kind. So to see two together, let alone fighting, is almost unique."

The two juvenile females, believed to be siblings, were both hunting Sambar, a large and common Indian deer, when their paths crosses. Blood ties were forgotten as they viewed each other as rivals rather than sisters.
"As soon as the two tigresses came into contact they immediately came to blows. It was an incredible sight," said Jayakumar.'

A scientific count carried out last year found that there may now be as few as 1300 wild tigers left in India.

Minister mocks animal activists over roo cull

22-09-2008 BY JULIEANNE STRACHAN, The Herald, Australia

NSW Lands Minister Tony Kelly has gone on the offensive to support the culling of kangaroos for meat, by mocking animal welfare protesters. Mr Kelly hosted a kangaroo tasting event at Parliament House yesterday, where he told a large crowd the animals had been eaten by Australians for 40,000 years and the industry was worth $60 million to NSW.

DINNER: A kangaroo dish.

The event was billed as an opportunity to "raise the Sydney food service sectors awareness" of how kangaroo could benefit their businesses.

The Herald reported yesterday that Hunter wildlife carers had slammed a Department of Environment and Climate Change proposal to introduce commercial kangaroo harvesting in the Upper Hunter next year.

Mr Kelly said yesterday there were misconceptions about kangaroo meat and he had wanted to confront the animal rights activists who had gathered outside Parliament earlier in the day.
He said he had heard there was a "huge demonstration" on Macquarie Street, then joked that only three people took part.
"I was going to ask them 'what do you do with barbecue sauce if you can't put it on meat? What can you do? Put it on salad?'.
"I heard there was three and they had given up by the time I arrived."

World League for Protection of Animals vice-president Joan Papayanni said she and the four other protesters were disturbed that the Government would host such an event, because culling kangaroos was cruel.
"Every time a female kangaroo is shot three generations of kangaroos are killed," she said.
"That's because most of them have a joey in their pouch which is killed and a juvenile at their feet who is totally dependent on them who is left to die."

She said claims the kangaroo population was expanding were untrue, with some data showing a 60 per cent decline since the 1990s.
Mr Kelly said culls were necessary and the present population was about 21 million.
"It's important for the preservation of the kangaroos, so they have enough to eat and drink, there is a cull," he said.

Anti-HLS US Demo Tour, Monthly Roundup

22-09-2008 SHAC, IndyMedia UK

Over a period of thirty days and thirty nights, from mid-August 2008 through mid-September 2008, Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS) customers and profiteers across the United States were struck by a surprise anti-HLS tour of the country.

After finishing off four days of actions in this disgusting nation's Capitol of Washington, D.C., activists went south to pay some visits. On Tuesday, August 19th activists stormed the front entrance at the office of Wyeth Pharmaceuticals in Richmond, Virginia. With our voices, masks, signs and fliers we disrupted business as usual at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. We made sure employees knew that while they're stuffing their pockets with blood money it comes at the price of 500 animals being butchered everyday inside of Huntingdon Life Sciences' laboratories.

Employees were clearly shocked, disturbed and sickened at the images of HLS's victims. It was very clear that they wanted no part in this kind of business. To all the employees we visited that Tuesday at 2248 Darbytown Road, Richmond, Virginia, until you and your company Wyeth stops doing business with Huntingdon and stops profiting from animal cruelty we'll be back again.

Activists then moved on further south to Greensboro, North Carolina to compliment the activity already going on in the area to shut down Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS) for good. On

Wednesday, August 20th, just after midnight, activists paid some late night surprise visits to the homes of HLS customers in Greensboro, North Carolina. Covered in black, with a megaphone and fliers, animal lovers stormed two homes of HLS profiteers. One of our visits even had the corporate scum come to the door for a second then shut off the light and slam the door shut. Chanting, "For the animals we will fight... We know where you sleep at night!" and "For the kitten, for the mouse... We are outside of your house!", while throwing fliers everywhere and marching all over their lawns to let all their neighbors know what kind of business their dealing with.

To all those we visited that late Wednesday night and all those we didn't visit: until you and your companies Novartis, Syngenta and Bristol-Myers Squibb cut all their ties to Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS) and animal abuse, the locals of Greensboro will be back and you better believe... we'll be back too.

This hard-hitting surprise tour then made its way west across North Carolina to the town of Asheville. While there we decided Asheville's only Staples deserved a treat. On the afternoon of Wednesday, August 20th individuals, with 'Staples Kills' fliers hidden on their person, went into the store and left fliers everywhere they could. In all we left the Staples at 65 Merrimon Avenue, Asheville, North Carolina with hundreds of fliers. Oh and Staples, how do you think your potential customers will act when they find out that Staples supplies a vivisecting, puppy-punching, people killing business? Staples, until you vow never to do business with animal abusers and never to do business again with HLS we'll be back, but your customers won't be.

Can't stop, won't stop. The tour moved on. Next on our list was Glaxo SmithKline in Memphis, Tennessee. Glaxo SmithKline, we had to give it to ya. You are probably, in every way, one of the most disgusting customer's of HLS that way have to deal with. So you better believe we're gonna hit you hard.

On Thursday, August 21st activists stormed 4480 Swinnea Road in Memphis, Tennessee to let all the kitty cat killers know that we will never back down. Fliers were of what HLS is and does were everywhere and when there was nothing left activists went outside and explored the building chanting "It's your money!... Your fault!" "It's your job... Your fault!" and "Puppy killers... Leave town!" "Kitty cat killers... Leave town!" "Bad company... Leave town!".

Glaxo SmithKline, until you drop all your disgusting abuse, cruelty and exploitation we’ll be back. No compromise means NO compromise. GSK, cut your ties to not only HLS but to all your nasty business. If you don't drop HLS GSK, we can promise you that the so called "animal rights extremists" will never forgive and never forget. We'll be back Glaxo. We promise.

This rabble rousing tour then joined our friends north in the Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota) for a post-RNC SHAC 7 support/anti-HLS event.

On Sunday, September 7th in the rainy cold weather people made a home visit to a top 3M employee. 3M has been known to be a customer of HLS and is not unaware of this. 3M managers and executives have been visited numerous times within the last year. No rest for the wicked especially 3M, as long as those innocent animals are trapped inside of Huntingdon Life Sciences facilities. 3M, your huge houses far out in the suburbs of St. Paul, Minnesota will not stop this campaign. You will drop HLS or you'll be shutdown with it. Deal with HLS. Deal with us.
This uncompromising, in defense of all life, animal defending tour then made its way to River City (formally known as Evansville, Indiana). Over the last year, the local chapter of Animal Defense League in the River City (River City ADL) has been waging Operation: Road Rage, a campaign against Interstate 69 and in defense of the animals, earth and people. With our love and rage we complimented the local activity with a series of actions.

On Wednesday, September 10th, activists stormed the office of Mead Johnson Nutritionals: A Bristol-Myers Squibb Company at 2400 W Lloyd Expressway, Evansville, IN 47721. An employee saw activists and opened the door to find out what we want. This employee then began choking one of the activists when we started chanting and trying to make our way in. This activist immediately shouted "That's assault! We got it on camera!" pointing to the camera. The employee immediately back away and let us storm in. Fliers covered the ground of Mead Johnson Nutritionals. Activists chanted and point at the employees with chants such as "HLS... Shut them down!" "HLS... Shut them down!" and "It's your money... Your fault!" "It's your jobs... "Your fault!" "It's your company... Your fault!" could be heard echoing throughout the build.

Happy September 11th HLS!
Mead Johnson: "Knock, knock..." "Who's there?" "September 11th..." "September 11th who?" "You said you'd never forget!"

Mead Johnson: "Knock, Knock..." "Who's there?" "HLS's nightmare..." "HLS who?" "It doesn't matter if you try to forget who HLS is. We never forget. We never forgive. And we always win."

On the late night hours of Thursday, September 11th in the River City, Mead Johnson Nutrionals' were paid some unpatriotic visits. Our first stop was to the home of the President of Mead Johnson Nutrionals, Stephen W Golsby received windows being banged on, fliers all over the lawn and loud, angry voices in the air. Stephen Golsby, how do you think your neighbors will feel when they find out what kind of business Mead Johnson Nutritionals is doing? Stephen, how do you think your family members will feel when they find out your blood money comes from punching four-month-old beagle puppies in the face, dissecting animals while they're still alive, and sending products onto the market that kill dozens of people and hospitalize hundreds more?

Peace is patriotic... and that's the problem. This is no time for peace while 500 animals are slaughtered everyday by HLS. Our September 11th party moved onto Susan Wedeking's home. Susan Wedeking is the Associate Director of Corporate and Business Communications of Mead Johnson Nutrionals. Susan lives on an unpaved road, hidden deep in the woods. Susan, did you think a place like this would ever stop people like us from getting you to drop HLS? Think again. We left fliers along this whole unpaved road leading to the bunny killer's house. Susan we know you and your neighbors heard us as we screamed outside your place. And we know your neighbors woke up to fliers all over that long road. Until you and your company Mead Johnson Nutrionals forces Bristol-Myers Squibb to drop HLS and cut all ties to animal abuse we'll be back again. No justice. Just us. Smash HLS.

To all the corporations, offices, homes and individuals we visited over that period of thirty days and thirty nights, this campaign has one goal... to shutdown Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS). Your companies are responsible for keeping HLS barely alive. HLS needs you but you don't need HLS, and you don't need to deal with us. HLS kills 500 animals every single day. They test, murder and burn kittens, puppies, bunnies, mice, rats, fish, birds, monkeys and farm animals. These innocent animals are poisoned, cut up and burned. These poor creatures have limbs broken as they endure the cruelty of sadistic technicians who have been proved, in six investigations, to abuse and torture these animals in their care.

HLS has been caught numerous times for conducting sloppy science. Huntingdon not only has been known to kill animals, but it has let unsafe products go onto the market that has killed and hospitalized people too.

We are an uncompromising, compassionate and growing campaign. We will shutdown Huntingdon Life Sciences. As the chants go "All you cops and all your spies... We will never compromise!" "All your feds and private I.s... We will never compromise!" We hope you didn't think putting our friends, the SHAC 7, in prison would stop us from winning. Listen to our words when we chant "You can put our friends in jail... But we will drive the final nail!" HLS customers and profiteers it's simple, we never back down and we always win. Deal with HLS... deal with us.

We'll be back...

To everyone who reads this; those who were in this campaign before us; and those who have not joined us yet:

This is a growing campaign that we all should and must take part in. Together let us finish the job and shutdown HLS for our friends the SHAC 7, for the animals and for our uncompromising war against this system. Please, to the people who've left this campaign… we need your support to win this campaign. To those who can't come to demos, we understand but please consider contacting a local Animal Defense League chapter and giving us newer folks advice and guidance.

There are Animal Defense League chapters in: Washington, D.C.; Boston, MA; Portland, OR; Chicago, IL; North Carolina; River City (Evansville, IN); Long Island, New York; Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St Paul, MN); Salt Lake City, UT; and more in to come.

Be young! Have fun! Smash HLS!

Disclaimer: No Animal Defense League (ADL) chapters were in anyway connected to the organizing or participation of the actions listed in this article. The people who participated in the actions are in noway connected to: Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC) Global, SHAC USA, Hugs for Puppies (Humane League of Philadelphia).

'Whale watching' belangrijke inkomstenbron Fiji - Aantal bultrugwalvissen toegenomen

Industry promotes whale watching

22-09-2008 Fiji Times, Fiji

WHALE watching has huge tourism potential, says the Fiji Islands Hotel and Tourism Association president Dixon Seeto. He said this could be big for tourism because Fiji was in the whales' migratory path.

"This could be a huge industry," he said. "It is also part of eco-tourism where people want to come and be a part of nature.
"Most people who come for holiday are from big cities and they want to see things they don't see in their countries.

A research team from the Fisheries Department and the South Pacific Whale Research Consortium on whale and dolphins completed a three-week study in waters off Levuka.
This survey, which follows similar others in 2002 and 2003, confirmed an increase in the number of humpback whales sighted in earlier surveys.

Principal fisheries research officer Aisake Batibasaga said the survey results were encouraging since the Fiji Government declared the waters of Fiji a whale sanctuary in 2003.
Fiji Islands Visitors Bureau former chief executive Viliame Gavoka said Fiji should protect its natural heritage and iconic animals like the crested iguanas.

"Fiji should continue to protect the unique attraction, including its wildlife.
"A lot of countries lack that sense of uniqueness while Fiji has a lot to be proud of. Around the coral coast at this time of the year, we see a bit of whales on their way south," he said.
"It's a wonderful phenomenon terms of wildlife."

FBI agents join mink-release probe

22-09-2008 Deseret News, Salt Lake City, USA

FBI agents are assisting Davis County sheriff's deputies in an investigation of the release of about 6,000 mink early Sunday morning from a farm in west Kaysville.
Davis County Sheriff's Lt. Brad Wilcox said officers received a call about 1 a.m. Sunday morning reporting the freed animals. The mink had spread throughout the area, but were mostly recovered by 3 p.m. Sunday.

Wilcox said animal control officers were responding to a few calls from residents of mink "spottings." One person in the area was bitten as they tried to corral one of the animals, but received only minor injuries.

FBI spokesman Juan Becerra said that agents from the Salt Lake office where still at the scene, gathering evidence and determining the full extent of damages at the farm.

Becerra said it was too early to say whether the incident could be connected with another mink release at a South Jordan farm in late August. An internet posting from the press office of the activist group, Animal Liberation Front, indicated that a "local soldier out of Utah" was claiming responsibility for that release as well as destruction of the farm's breeding records.

WILDSCHWEINPLAGE IN BERLIN

Widescale protests in Nepal over scrapping of

animal sacrifice

21-09-2008 The Hindu, India

Kathmandu (PTI): Protests over Nepal government's decision to scrap the practice of sacrificing animals during the Hindu festival of Indrajatra, continued for the third day on Sunday, with members of the ethnic Newar community staging demonstrations in the capital.

Life came to a stand-still in major parts of Kathmandu as the Newars forced shut markets, blocked roads and burnt tyres to protest a "cultural invasion" by Finance Minister Baburam Bhattarai, who curtailed the budget for the purchase of buffaloes and other animals meant for sacrificing on the last day of the eight-day Indrajatra festival.

Demonstrators, who had stopped chariot pulling procession of living Goddess Kumari on the concluding day of the Festival on Fiday, today clashed with police at the Hanumandhoka, Basantapur, Makhan, Indrachwok, Bhimsenthan and Bhotahity areas in the capital, injuring at least six.

They burnt effigies of Bhattarai and Minister for Culture Gopal Kiranti, both belonging to Maoist, and demanded public apology from them even after the government announced to set aside Rs 15,000 for the rituals.
The money is to be utilised for animal sacrifices and other rituals during the festival.

"The Maoists had stopped the Dabur Vatika Miss Nepal 2008 contest saying that it would invite foreign cultural invasion but why are they trying to invade the culture of Kathmandu by cutting the budget?" an agitator asked.

President Ram Baran Yadav, who attended the beginning of the Indrajatra festival last week, did not attend the closing ceremony of the festival on Friday owing to security reasons.

Eigenaar modezaak Chacoco in Emmen bedreigt dierenactivisten Respect voor Dieren

Respect voor Dieren verstoort modeshow in Emmen

21-09-2008 Animal Rights Media

Tamarins gain freedom to monkey around in Norman

21-09-2008 By Chris Schutz Staff Writer NewsOK, Oklahoma, USA

NORMAN — Eight new residents of the Little River Zoo in south Norman are getting used to some unfamiliar things — sun, rain, fresh breezes and trees to climb.
Until a couple of months ago, the cottontop tamarin monkeys lived in a laboratory in Wisconsin, where they could hear other animals in the laboratory but could see only the other members of their immediate families and the human laboratory staff.

"It's their first time to be outdoors,” said Janet Sadler, director of the Little River Zoo, which has animals representing 100 species. Many of the zoo's residents led former lives as pets or laboratory animals.

video

The squirrel-sized monkeys have some high-profile benefactors. Their enclosure, a planned expansion and their upkeep are funded by the families of University of Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops, country music entertainer Toby Keith and Norman physician Jeff Nees.

The zoo celebrated the animals' move into their new home with a "Moving In and Moving Up” celebration. The benefactors looked on as their children pressed their handprints into wet concrete for a plaque that is to be part of the exhibit.
Just like homeStoops' wife, Carol, said she was impressed that the animals seemed so comfortable in their new space.
"I was surprised the monkeys weren't more scared,” she said.

Carol Stoops and Nees' wife, Kathy, said it's even more surprising that their husbands and Toby Keith were all in town at the same time for the exhibit's unveiling.

The animals' new home is a 100-square-foot enclosure for one pair of tamarins and an adjoining 200-square-foot enclosure for another pair and their two sets of twins.

Cottontop tamarins are considered highly endangered because many of them have been seized for research and the pet trade. The breed comes from the tropical forests of Costa Rica and northern South America, where its habitat has been shrinking, Sadler said.
Only an estimated 1,000 cottontop tamarins remain in the wild, and there are about 1,800 in captivity, she said.

In their natural environment, tamarins are "big hunters of little things” — bugs, lizards and eggs, Sadler said. At Little River, they're getting yogurt, fruit, monkey chow and a canned diet formulated for primates.

Before their retirement from the Wisconsin laboratory, the tamarins' interaction was observed as part of psychological studies, Sadler said. Tamarins are of special interest because of their high intelligence and strong family attachments.

The Little River tamarins will not reproduce because they received birth control implants before they left the laboratory, Sadler said. Tamarins have a life expectancy of 25 years; the oldest in the group was born in 1993. The youngest are twins born in May.

The eight tamarins can move back and forth from their outdoor enclosures to a heated and cooled indoor space, Sadler said. Later, a second phase will.

Alle dieren in dierentuinen leiden een tragisch leven....

Imprisoned animals

20-09-2008 Public Forum Letter, The Salt Lake Tribune, USA

In "Dead elephant led an abused, isolated life" (Tribune, Sept. 16), retired zoo curator Les Schobert notes that to get baby elephants for zoos their mothers are usually killed. But this is just a morsel of zoos' reality. All zoo animals' lives are tragic.

After a four-year investigation into the trade of exotic animals in the United States, Alan Green, author of Animal Underworld: Inside America's Black Market for Rare and Exotic Species, also learned about the deplorable reality of zoos.

"Surplus" zoo animals are "donated" to animal dealers who breed or sell them from so-called "sanctuaries" to be "pets" to unqualified individuals, butchered for the "exotic meat" industry, slaughtered in caged hunts (a la Dick Cheney), sold to roadside shows and turned into status symbol trophies (like the hide and attached head of a bear in Sarah Palin's office).

Real wildlife sanctuaries, not zoos, should be trusted with preserving wildlife.

We learn more about animals from nature television programs than by staring at unhappy, unhealthy, fearful or utterly bored imprisoned zoo animals.

Zoos aren't necessary or educational. Let's end them.

Misha's sad journey

Dead Utah elephant suffered tragic life - and she

wasn't alone

16-09-2008 By Matthew D. LaPlante, The Salt Lake Tribune

She was born 27 years ago in the wilds of Africa. By the time she was a year old, she had been ripped from her family. Penned, chained and shipped to a noisy new world, her California keepers allowed her to roam only a few paces this way and a few paces that. She was bullied and dominated. She lost a baby. She was poked, prodded, cut and left in pain.

Misha the elephant died Tuesday on the concrete floor of a cinderblock building in a lot behind her most recent home at Utah's Hogle Zoo, some 10,000 miles from where she was born. No one is certain yet what caused her death, at what could be described as "middle age" for an elephant. But one of Misha's former trainers has a strong suspicion: "She lost her will."

Out of Africa. It was the early 1980s in South Africa. Apartheid was law. Nelson Mandela was in prison. And the nation's population of elephants, which had fallen to less than 200 earlier in the century, had steadily climbed to more than 8,000, pushing against the capacity of the country's wildlife reserves.

Between 1981 and 1983, the South African government approved the killing of more than 3,200 elephants. The government also permitted the capture of some of the animals - mostly juveniles, whose size and temperament made their integration into captivity easier - for transport overseas.

"The only way you could do it was to kill the mother first," said Les Schobert, a retired California zoo curator who procured a number of elephant calves in the early 1980s before growing disenchanted with the industry. "You couldn't get a baby elephant away from its mom in any other way. You had to shoot the mom and then collect the babies." In most cases, Schobert said, the calves were still drinking their mother's milk and had to be

Four elephants have died in Utah
In the wild, African elephants can live well into their 60s.
Asian elephants have been known to live into their 70s.
Four elephants have died at the Hogle Zoo in the past eight years:
March 5, 2001: Asian elephant Toka, 37, died of unknown causes, apparently cancer.
March 9, 2004: Asian elephant Kali, 59, was euthanized after she was found on the floor struggling to get up. She had been suffering from arthritis.
April 31, 2005: African elephant Wankie, 36, died hours after arriving from the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago.
Sept. 9, 2008: African elephant Misha, 27, was euthanized after several weeks of deteriorating health.

trained to use a bottle. Many couldn't make the transition. From a quarter to a third of the calves died within four months of arriving in the United States, Schobert said. "That was the risk you ran by importing them." Hundreds of elephants made their way to the United States in this way. Among them was Misha.

Under California Stars. At about 2 years old, when many elephant calves are just beginning to be weaned, Misha arrived at Marine World, Africa, U.S.A., in Redwood City, Calif., an aging theme park with animal attractions, a few low-tech rides and a popular water-skiing show. In the summer of 1986, the park's menagerie -

including performing pachyderms, tropical birds, wild cats, dolphins and killer whales - was moved to a larger campus, 60 miles north in Vallejo. That's where elephant trainer Barbara Anderson met Misha, in 1990.

"We had 12 elephants at that time," Anderson recalled, ticking off the animals' names like a proud mother. "In particular, Tika, Tava, Misha and Malaika were all pretty tight. They were good friends." Misha was always nervous, Anderson said, "and she was never going to be the dominant one in the herd." But Anderson said Misha also didn't let herself get picked on. It's unclear when that all changed - but park veterinary records make it clear that it did. Anderson left the park in 1996, upset that the organization was not making better efforts to modernize its elephant training methods and habitats. "Of course," she said. "They were losing a lot of money."
Indeed, dwindling attendance had left the nonprofit Marine World Foundation millions in the red. In fall 1997, it defaulted on its loans, which had been guaranteed by the city.

When Vallejo couldn't find a buyer for the park, it assumed ownership of the campus, buildings and more than 3,000 animals - including Misha's herd of elephants, which by that time was down to 10 animals. Promptly, the city turned control of the park over to the for-profit Premier Parks Inc.

Living Out Loud. Premier had a plan: It would break from the park's traditional focus on animal education in order to offer its visitors more thrills. And if successful, it would exercise an option to buy the park.

At the time, Premier president Gary Story told The San Francisco Chronicle that his company had been "sensitive to add attractions which will not disturb or disrupt the animals." Less than two years later, Premier began construction on the tallest, fastest and longest wooden roller coaster in Northern California. It's name belied another distinction - they called it "The Roar" and park advertisements enticed guests to "hear it!"

Today, the park now known as Six Flags Discovery Kingdom is chock full of rides and exhibits. And its elephant habitat lies within a peanut's throw of a half-dozen thrill rides, including three super-fast, steel-track roller coasters.

Four years in a row, the California-based nonprofit In Defense of Animals has placed Discovery Kingdom on its list of "10 Worst Zoos for Elephants," noting that "nine elephants have died at the amusement park since 1995." That's a rate of one death every 16 months among animals that, in most cases, were no more than middle-aged.

Suzanne Roy, the association's program director, said it's no surprise that so many of the park's elephants died early. "They're living there in the midst of a noisy, crowded amusement park, in the shadow of several roller coasters, housed in this tiny zoo lot...just crammed in there," Roy said. "It's a completely unnatural environment."

Nowhere To Run. When Anderson left Misha's side in 1996, she said, she left an animal that, while often timid, could hold her own within the herd. But by 1999, that had changed. Veterinary records obtained by In Defense, under California's Public Records Act, show that Misha - then 18 years old and more than 7,400 pounds - was known to be the frequent victim of other elephants' attacks. One her most frequent assailants was Liz, an older female of nearly 10,000 pounds. Over several years, the records show, Misha was attacked by Liz and others, resulting in a number of deep lacerations, abrasions and some internal injuries which left her with weeks of bloody stool.

Hogle Zoo spokeswomen Holly Braithwaite said that, in Utah, animals that are bullied by their peers in a dangerous way are separated. "The Association of Zoos and Aquariums stressed the ability to separate the animals if they are not getting along," Braithwaite said. "We don't want to have our animals hurt ... we're not going to put animals in together if they are not getting along."

And Anderson noted that the Marine World lot was exceptionally small for the number of animals it held. "You can't just throw them all in there and expect them to get along," she said. "They've got to have the ability to run away from danger."

Breaking Point. In 2001, park officials decided they would attempt to impregnate Misha to add to their herd. The process included an episiotomy - a vaginal incision that later grew infected and stayed that way for more than two months. Records show urine frequently leaked through it.

Meanwhile, the records show Misha was suffering from a large lesion on her lower left jaw, which would grow deeper, more sensitive and more infected over the next four years. At one point in fall 2001, vets attempting to clean the site broke off the tip of a knife in Misha's jaw. "After many attempts at retrieval," the record states, "the blade tip was left in."

Association of Zoos and Aquariums spokesman Steve Feldman said that such medical records can only accurately be understood by a veterinarian. "You need to be qualified to understand," he said. "The care of exotic wildlife is extremely complicated and a difficult world to understand."

In March 2003, after 22 months of pregnancy - full term for an African elephant - Misha gave birth. Like many other calves born in captivity, Misha's did not survive. Records show the attending veterinarians were able to revive the stillborn calf for only a few minutes before losing it for good.

Not quite a year later, the insemination team tried again - reopening the incision even as they continued to battle the persistent infection in Misha's jaw, which had grown to a hole 8 inches deep. The second insemination didn't work. By that time, the thrill park had added several more roller coasters and attendance was again rising. Critics, including some on Vallejo's City Council, pushed the park's owners to use the opportunity to modernize their animal training methods. In particular, they wanted the park to follow the lead of zoos across the United States that had ended the practice of "free contact," in which trainers move freely about the elephant's exhibits, coercing and disciplining animals with sticks and hooks. But the park continued that technique.

In June 2004, Misha made the news around the world when she knocked down zookeeper Patrick Chapple with her trunk, then gored him through the back and abdomen. Zoo officials said the attack was unprovoked.

Chapple survived. Misha was isolated, and remained so until April 2005, when she was packed into a crate, loaded onto a truck, and driven 700 miles to Utah.

Six Flags spokeswoman Nancy Chan said her facility was "extremely proud" of the care it provided to Misha, who Chan said "was in excellent health when she was transferred to the Hogle Zoo."

Dying Young. On nature reserves in Africa, elephants can live well into their 60s, according to the National Zoo in Washington D.C. By comparison, the oldest African elephant in an American Zoo is 48 years old - her name is Hydari, and she's lived at Utah's Hogle Zoo since 1967.

Given the zoo's success with Hydari and given Misha's relatively young age, Hogle's lead elephant keeper, Doug Tomkinson, said he expected that Misha would be part of the Utah herd for decades to come.

After all, Misha had been given an improved living situation - placed back into contact with other elephants and in a "protected contact" environment, where zookeepers do not go into the creatures' habitats. And though Hogle officials said they were aware of Misha's prior medical complications, she had experienced no significant problems since arriving in Utah.

Her attitude also seemed to have taken a turn for the better. Whatever inner turmoil had caused her to turn on a trainer a year earlier did not appear to be present in Utah.

"Misha was always a happy and playful elephant," said Holly Braithwaite, the Hogle spokeswoman. "Misha quickly became close to her keepers ... she was just a good, hard-working, caring animal." When Misha's health began to falter last month - she was losing energy, was having trouble sleeping, wasn't eating and seemed to be in great pain - Hogle's animal staff was bewildered and concerned. As her condition grew steadily worse, the zoo's staff worked around the clock to diagnose her ailment, taking tests, consulting with experts from other parks and even using a crane to help her stand when she could not do so alone.

Finally, on Tuesday afternoon, the staff gathered to make a collective decision about whether to continue. "We felt like the only fair thing to do was to put her to sleep," said Dr. Nancy Carpenter, the zoo's lead veterinarian.

Last Goodbye. By the time she was put down, the once 7,400-pound elephant was down to 6,000 pounds. But if there are any guesses as to what caused Misha's sudden downturn, Hogle officials aren't saying.

The results of a necropsy performed on Wednesday won't likely be made public for several weeks. And lab tests could take even longer.

But Anderson isn't waiting for the results - they can't tell her what she already knows about Misha. "Here is what you've done," Anderson said. "You've taken this animal and taught her to fear. You've put her in a tiny yard and then disciplined her when she fought back. You've put this totally social animal in isolation, denying her any social experiences and then shipped her off."

Whatever the ultimate answer to Misha's sudden death, Anderson said, to her, the big mystery is no mystery at all. "She lost her will."

Populatie zeldzame 'stump-tailed' makaak neemt toe in Thailand - Verbod op jacht in Khao Krapuk-Khao Tao Mo

RARE MACAQUE NUMBERS GROWING

Since a no-hunting zone was declared in one forest, protected species are thriving, writes Chaiwat Satyaem in Phetchaburi

20-09-2008 The Bangkok Post, Thailand

The population of rare stump-tailed macaques is steadily rising in the Khao Krapuk-Khao Tao Mo hunting-ban zone in Tha Yang district, Warayut Nilpueng, the zone office chief, said yesterday. Mr Warayut said there are four hordes of stump-tailed macaques, or about 200 in total, living in the no-hunting zone.

Of the 200, 50 were born after the Khao Krapuk-Khao Tao Mo no-hunting zone was established in 1999. Since then, the monkey population has steadily grown.
The stump-tailed macaque is a rare species and is protected. It is one of five macaque species found in Thailand.

Also known as the bear macaque, it is a fruit-eating species living off a range of local fruit as well as young leaves. Its distinct physical characteristics include its long, thick and dark brown fur, its short tail and hairless face.
The babies are born white, but the fur becomes darker as they reach maturity. In Thailand, there are two species of stump-tailed macaques which are mainly found in thick forests.

Apart from the monkeys, there has also been a marked increase in the populations of more than 60 species of wild birds in the zone, Mr Warayut added.
The Khao Krapuk-Khao Tao Mo no-hunting zone is well known as an eco-tourism attraction in Phetchaburi.

20-Jarige man opgepakt in Dublin (Californië, VS) voor proppen twee dode katten en dode hond in kluisjes school - Dieren gestolen uit dierenziekenhuis

Man arrested for stuffing dead animals in lockers

20-09-2008 San Diego 6 News, USA

DUBLIN, Calif. (AP) - Police have arrested a 20-year-old man on suspicion of stealing dead animals from a veterinary hospital morgue and stuffing them into empty lockers at a Bay Area high school.

Police say Brian Goett admitted that he took the bodies of two cats and a 25-pound dog from an unlocked freezer behind the VetCare Hospital in Dublin. He said he then put the dead animals in lockers at Dublin High School before classes started Aug. 25.

Goett told police he thought it was a practical joke. Goett was arrested at his Pleasanton home Friday afternoon arrested on suspicion of grand theft, tampering with school property and improper disposal of animals.

Protesters march through Wickham

20-09-2008 Hampshire Chronicle, UK

Around 100 animal rights protesters marched through Wickham this afternoon, Saturday September 20. The group was made up of members from the Stop Wickham Animal Testing group (SWAT) and animal rights activists from all over the country. They were taking part in the annual march against animal testing at Wickham Laboratories, based in Winchester Road.

Around 60 police were on hand to oversee the peaceful, but loud march, which started in Mill Lane and progressed to the Square for speeches, and then back to Mill Lane through the town.
One person was arrested.

Jeannette McClunan, the SWAT rally organiser from Corhampton, said: "We are very pleased with the turn out. We have got people from all over the country here. I have been doing these demonstrations for around 20 years. I feel that in today's society, there is no need to continue using animals to experiment on. There are many other different methods of testing that don't take anywhere near as long to produce results. Testing on animals is barbaric."

Mrs McClunan's mother, Helen Nelson, from Gosport was also at the march.
She said: "I have been coming to these marches for about 30 years. I object to animals being tested on for products humans are going to use. It causes the animals suffering and there are so many other ways to test these things."

Acting Chief Inspector Darren Murphy, based at Havant, was in charge of policing the march.
He said: "We have made one arrest, there could have been more. In all the event has gone as well as can be expected. There are some points that can be worked on for next year, like how long we allow the protesters to remain in the road and review the conditions we can impose. Having spoken to the organiser of the event, I think she is more open to dialogue than perhaps they have been in the past."

Communiqué from ALF activists Date: September 19, 2008 Institution targeted: Primate Vivisectors at UCLA Received anonymously

ALF torch UCLA van in Irvine, CA - June 2008

Summer break is over. UCLA is still needlessly torturing animals. New classes, expensive books, oh, and burning vans. That's right we are back to work. An incindiary device was left under a van in Acton, CA in the first hours of Thursday, Sept. 18th.

Let's hope it worked as well as the one in Irvine. Let's also hope that the UCLA regents make some good choices so that we don't have to keep doing this. We don't want to have to go further but be assured that we will if need be.

Vivisectors we will be coming for you.

Van 11 pelikanen in badplaats Californië (VS) vleugels opzettelijk gebroken - Slechts een vogel overleeft ernstige mishandeling....

11 pelicans found with wings broken at Bolsa

Chica beach

Only one has survived. Wildlife officials say the attacks appear to be intentional: 'Someone is snapping the wings backward.' A $5,000 reward is being offered to catch the perpetrators.

20-09-2008 By Mike Anton Los Angeles Times Staff Writer, USA

Eleven pelicans have been found on Bolsa Chica State Beach this week with their wings intentionally broken, prompting an investigation by federal wildlife authorities and the offer of a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. The sole pelican to survive is being cared for at the Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center of Orange County, which put up the reward.

Assistant Wildlife Director Lisa Birkle looks at the injured shoulder of a brown pelican at the Wetlands Wildlife Care Center in Huntington Beach. The pelican was one of 11 that were found with their wings intentionally injured or broken at Bolsa Chica State Beach. The rest did not survive.

Ten of the birds were less than a year old and were probably feeding in the water, said Lisa Birkle, the Huntington Beach center's assistant wildlife director, adding that residents have reported seeing fishing boats close to shore in recent days.

"The birds targeted are new birds arriving from the Channel Islands," she said. "They are young and inexperienced and don't have a fear of humans. . . . Because they're so hungry, they'll go right up to people."

With ocean temperatures around 70 degrees, small fish that would normally provide food for the birds near the surface have submerged deeper in search of cooler water.

Nine pelicans were found Monday by a Bolsa Chica lifeguard. The two others were found near the same lifeguard tower in subsequent days. Birkle said the injuries were consistent: "Someone is snapping the wings backward.

"Because the pelicans were found wet with sand packed into their exposed wounds, it is suspected that they were injured in the water and dragged themselves up on shore. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is investigating.

Dorpsbewoners Chemagora (Zimbabwe) ondervinden veel hinder van buffels....

Buffaloes terrorise villagers in Chemagora

20-09-2008 Midlands Bureau, The Herald, Zimbabwe

BUFFALOES are causing havoc in Gokwe’s Chemagora area where they are allegedly terrorising villagers and destroying vegetation. The most-affected places are areas surrounding Skombela Farm and Chidoma, which is deep inside the Chemagora forest land. Chemagora is a vast and expansive forestry area stretching for about 30km and is infested with a number of wild animals.

The larger part of the area has no human settlements save for a few scattered farms. Villagers who spoke to Chronicle on Tuesday said the buffaloes were usually seen early in the morning or in the evening making it difficult for them to board buses and trucks along the Gokwe-Kwekwe highway.

"The wild beasts have not caused any serious harm but we are now living in fear since buffaloes are unpredictable. It has become a problem to board buses to some of us who live deep inside Chidoma," said Mr Luckford Nyathi, of Chidoma. He said the villagers were worried that the buffaloes, besides threatening people, could destroy their crops during the forthcoming summer season.

"Already the animals are disturbing small plants and other forms of vegetation in the forest. There is nothing to stop them from invading our fields when the time comes. "This will be a painful experience if the wild beasts are not driven away as we are still smarting from the effects of devastating drought," said Mr Nyathi.

Other villagers echoed the same sentiments and expressed hope that National Parks Department would shoot the animals and provide them with relish. Mr Bigboy Sibanda, of Skombela Farm said villagers wishing to travel to town were experiencing nightmares since they often wake up very early in the morning for them to catch the buses.

"The time we wake up for the bus stop is the same time when the buffaloes will be roaming the area freely. "It is the same problem when we come back in the evening. We are appealing to the responsible authorities to do something about the menace," said Mr Sibanda. He said buffaloes could be highly dangerous when provoked as they have a tendency of venting their fury on the first person they come across.

Football fan fights elephant cull

20-09-2008 By Steven McKenzie Highlands and Islands reporter, BBC Scotland news website

A Scotland football fan is among campaigners fighting the lifting of a ban on the cull of elephants by World Cup host South Africa. Les Ward, of Marchig Animal Welfare Trust, said the tournament could become a platform for groups calling for the moratorium to be reinstated.
Charity Born Free said South Africa would be under increased international scrutiny in the countdown to 2010.

The South African government said its elephant population has to be managed.
Scotland is among the countries trying to qualify for the tournament.
The national team recently got its campaign back on track with a 2-1 win over Iceland following defeat in Macedonia.

Mr Ward, an ardent Scotland fan and former director of Edinburgh-based Advocates for Animals, believed the Africans would delay culling animals until after the World Cup to avoid a backlash.
The lifting of the ban on culling and introduction of the National Norms and Standards for Management of Elephants in South Africa happened in May.

Mr Ward, of Carnwath, Lanark, said: "I was absolutely disgusted. It won't be a cull but a slaughter.
"Because of the close-knit family structures you can't take out one animal because of the cruelty and suffering that follows the death of a mother, calf, or bull. Whole herds will have to go."
He said other measures could be used to manage the population, such as contraception of females and moving animals to other locations.

Mr Ward added: "South Africa has so much to offer. It is a fantastic country which is really good for people to visit and has wildlife you can only dream off. The country is squandering such a huge asset."

The Born Free Foundation said it was "fundamentally opposed" to the culling of elephants.
A spokeswoman said: "We are unaware of any elephants having been culled so far.
"However, there is a significant lack of transparency in the decision-making process as required by the current regulations.
"The authorities are not required to give details of when and where elephants will be culled."

The foundation said South Africa would be under increased international scrutiny in the run up to 2010, but could only speculate on the impact it will have on decisions to cull.
The spokeswoman added: "Organisations such as Born Free will ensure that if the irresponsible decision to cull is made, it will receive widespread international attention whatever the timing, whether it be before, during or after the World Cup."

The South African government halted the killing of elephants in 1995 but since then numbers have more than doubled.
It authorised the cull as a last resort and that culling will only be acceptable under strict conditions.

South African Government Communication and Information System told the BBC Scotland news website: "There is no deliberate plan not to cull elephants before the World Cup.
"The Norms and Standards for the Management of elephants in South Africa allow for a number of options which may be used for controlling the elephant populations.
"These management options include contraception, translocation, range manipulation and culling.
"Culling may only be undertaken in terms of a culling plan prepared by a responsible person and as a last resort after all other management options have been exhausted."

Foto ANP/Rick Nederstigt

Sea turtle butchered on Qld beach

20-09-2009 Scott Casey, Brisbane Times, Australia

The RSPCA is calling for witnesses to the killing and butchery of a large sea turtle north of Brisbane, last week to come forward. The animal protection agency receipted a complaint last weekend that a group of adults and children dragged the animal out of the beach at Deception Bay and butchered it at a nearby property with the intent of selling its shell on internet trading website e-bay.

The meat from the animal was allegedly fed to dogs.

RSPCA Inspector Simon Eager this morning said EPA and wildlife rangers were investigating the incident, but it was currently hampered by a lack of witnesses.
"We certainly would be interested in anyone coming forward who is willing to give us a statement of any further information about it," Mr Eager said.
"Basically people are afraid to come forward to talk to us for fear of retribution."

Laws do exist which permit the hunting of turtles for traditional purposes but Mr Eager said that the RSPCA did not believe the turtle was caught by indigenous people.
"Certain species can be taken under local laws for traditional hunting purposes...in this instance we don't believe this is the case. The people we are looking at are not indigenous people," he said.
During this time of year sea turtles are commonly seen around Deception Bay as they come ashore to nest.
"It's not unusual to see these animals coming to shore and the young ones are hatching and making their way into the sea." Mr Eager said.

Mr Eager said the animal may have laid eggs on the beach recently.
Anybody with information about the killing is urged to contact the RSPCA or the EPA on their animal cruelty hotline 1300 852 188.

(Noot Kraaijer:

Popular killer whale 'Ku' dies at Nagoya Port

Aquarium

20-09-2008 The Mainichi Daily News, Japan

NAGOYA -- "Ku", a killer whale kept at the Nagoya Port Aquarium and a popular tourist attraction, died on Friday, the aquarium announced.

Ku performs in front of visitors at the
Nagoya Port Aquarium in this April 28, 2007 file photo.

The 6.1-meter-long, 2.7-ton female killer whale stopped eating around July 23. An examination found that Ku's skin was inflamed by herpes, and, despite treatment, Ku was found dead at the bottom of a pool on Friday morning.

Ku was the aquarium's most popular attraction, famous for her jumping during performances. While Ku being treated, the aquarium received over 50 get-well letters from children, including messages like "Come back soon" and "I want to see you jump again."

"We're really sad, because Ku was familiar to many people. We want to do more research on the unidentified diseases of marine animals and plants. Ku's death must not be in vain," said Itaru Uchida, the curator of the aquarium. A research team at the veterinary department of Gifu University is currently studying the cause of Ku's death in more detail.

With her dead, the number of killer whales bred in Japan has decreased to just seven, kept at Kamogawa Seaworld in Chiba Prefecture and Wakayama's Whale Museum.

Elephants trample two to death in Jharkhand

19-09-2008 Thaindian News, Thailand

Ranchi, Sep 19 (IANS) Two people were trampled to death and one was injured as elephants entered a village in Jharkhand’s Ramgarh district Friday and went on the rampage, attacking people and damaging property, police said.

A herd of elephants entered villages that come under the Kuju police station of Ramgargh, around 70 km from here, in the morning. They then went on the rampage in Ratwe village and trampled Khirodhar Mahto and Gulab Mahto to death. The elephants also wounded another villager, a police official said.

Forest officials later reached the village and drove the elephants away. The animals also damaged four houses.

Elephants often venture into human inhabited areas in the region, attack people, damage houses and destroy standing crops.

According to the forest department, over 400 people have died in the last six years in this human-elephant conflict and more than 700 have been injured.
The elephant population in Jharkhand is on the decline. The state is now home to 622 elephants as compared to the 772 in the last census.

Eigenaar Tom Smit stapt binnen.

New iguana species discovered in Fiji

18-09-2008 SBS World News Australia

A team of Australian and US scientists have found a new species of iguana living in Fiji. The newly discovered lizard is bright green with white bands, grows up to 90cm long and is thought to be highly endangered.

Associate Professor Scott Keogh from the Australian National University's School of Botany and Zoology said the iguana was the third species of the creatures known to inhabit Fiji.

A Fiji banded iguana

Keogh said the origin of the Fiji iguanas, which have lived in the Fiji islands for millions of years, had long puzzled scientists.
He said they probably floated across the Pacific Ocean from the Americas 8,000 kilometres away, where all other iguana species live.

"It is pretty clear that the rafting idea, even though it sounds implausible, is the only good explanation," Keogh said.
The new species, Brachylophus bulabula, has been given the common name the Fijian banded iguana.

Keogh said probably only a few hundred of the animals existed, and were under pressure for survival.
"Pretty much in every island in Fiji there has been cats and mongooses and goats introduced, all of which are bad for iguanas," Keogh said.

He said two other iguana varieties had been eaten to extinction about 2,800 years ago with the arrival of humans on Fiji, but this one had survived.
"They are green, very difficult to see and they are high up in the trees. They are also small. These would be quite hard to catch and not much to eat," he said.

Although iguanas exist in other Pacific islands they are relatively recent arrivals.
They have lived in the wild in Vanuatu for just 30 years, and for probably about one thousand years in Tonga, Keogh said.
