Poisoned bait leads to vulture and lynx deaths

30-11-2008 The Olive Press, Andalucia, Spain

Rare animals “deliberately killed” by farmers

TWO of the World’s rarest animals have been found dead in Granada and Jaen. In separate incidents, autopsies revealed that both an Iberian lynx and a Bearded vulture died as a result of ingesting man-made poisons. The death of the vulture, a species that has been extinct from Andalucía’s skies since 1980, is the second this year in Castril, Granada.

The dead bird at the time of her
release in May 2008.

The eight-month female bird – which was released in the Sierra de Cazorla Natural Park in May 2008 after being bred in captivity in northern Spain (see the Olive Press, issue 47) – was found on the same farm land where another Bearded vulture was discovered shot dead in April.
And officers from the Guardia Civil believe the same man, known only by the initials JGG, is responsible for the two deaths.

The 67-year-old farmer, who is still under investigation for the first death, is believed to have laced three pieces of meat with venom to deter foxes from his land. Also discovered close to the body of the bird were the remains of a fox and a sheep.
“This shows the damage that can be done to an area’s ecosystem with the reckless use of poison,”
“This shows the damage that can be done to an area’s ecosystem with the reckless use of poison,” said the mayor of Castril, José Juan López.

The Bearded vulture, Europe’s largest bird of a prey with a wing span of almost three metres, is also known as the lammergeier, a German word meaning lamb killer. Shepherds have reported in the past these vultures swooping down to carry off new-born sheep.

It was once dominant in mountain areas of Spain, but its numbers have been greatly reduced in the past 100 years due to hunting, poisoning and the proliferation of electric pylons, which have resulted in numbers of the species dying as a result of electrocution.
Due to a reintroduction programme, there are small colonies of the bird in Andalucía and northern Spain.

Meanwhile, green groups have slammed the deliberate killing of an Iberian lynx – the most endangered species of feline in the world.
The body of the five-year-old male was discovered close to a chicken coop on private farmland in Andujar, Jaen.
Tests showed the lynx, of which there are only an estimated 150 in the wild, had ingested rat poison.

The use of poisoned bait, a practice prohibited by Spanish law, has resulted in the deaths of 20,000 animals in Spain since 1995.
According to animal welfare group WWF, protected species such as Imperial eagles, Bearded vultures, Iberian lynx and Brown bears – have died as a result of eating poison.

Britse natuurorganisatie 'Marine Connection' dumpt ambassadrice Kylie Minogue na optreden bij opening hotel 'Atlantis' Dubai

Dubai hotel has several marine mamals in captivity

UK Charity drops Kylie over Atlantis dolphins

30-11-2008 Al Arabiya, Dubai

A $4 million gig at the at the star-studded launch party for the Atlantis hotel in Dubai caused Aussie pop star Kylie Minogue her name on the celebrity friends list of Marine Connection (http://www.marineconnection.org/index.html), a London based animal charity dedicated to the protection of dolphins and whales worldwide, according to a local Dubai newspaper.

The Marine Connection said Minogue's performance at the $20 million Atlantis hotel bash party on Nov. 21 was hypocritical given the hotel's Dolphin Bay attraction, a dolphin facility Atlantis management boasts as the first rescue rehabilitation centre for injured dolphins in Dubai.

Marine Connection claims that its purpose is for entertainment and that the dolphins were taken from the wild, which Atlantis disputes saying they were bred in captivity, according to the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society (WDCS).

The WDCS has exposed the resort's dolphin trade a day before the launching of the opening night. WDCS's website claims to have "exposed the cruelty and hypocrisy behind their [Atlantis] captive dolphin display."

"It's outrageous and hypocritical that Atlantis is claiming to be committed to conservation and to have a rescue and rehabilitation centre when they have supported the trade in dolphins by buying these animals," WDCS captivity campaigner Cathy Williamson was quoted on the organization’s website as saying.

Dolphins in luxurious captivity
Dolphin Bay houses about 24 bottlenose dolphins with which members from the paying public can swim.

According to the 7 Day’s report Margaux Dodds, spokesperson for Marine Connection, contacted Kylie's management in an effort to convince the diva to pull out of the show.
“Because Miss Minogue supported a facility that has captive dolphins captured from the wild, we can no longer be associated with her,” Dodds was quoted as saying in the paper.

Dodds expressed her disappointment in Kylie's decision adding that she "find[s] it difficult to believe that her management company had not heard of the furor over the dolphins, which was well covered.”

Kylie's contributions to Marine Connection were valuable, according to Dodds, since the pop star provided signed memorabilia for auctions. “It was disappointing to drop her," Dodds was quoted as saying.

The Atlantis resort has come under fire from environmentalists who have petitioned for the release of the aquarium’s whale and claimed that the owners of the hotel ignored international permit laws after capturing a shark off the Gulf coast in August and using it for entertainment and display.

Both Atlantis and Minogue’s representatives, Terry Blamey Management, could not be reached for comment Sunday.

Deurwaarder loert in Antwerpen naar flyers uitdelende dierenvrienden Respect voor Dieren - Protest tegen gebruik bont modezaken

Unizo stuurde een deurwaarder naar een 'flyers

uitdeling' van 'Respect voor Dieren'

30-11-2008 John Moussiaux, IndyMedia Belgium

Pers was massaal aanwezig.
Iedereen is verwittigd.

150 stranded whales die in Australia

30-11-2008 CNN

HOBART, Australia (AP) -- A group of 150 whales that became stranded on a remote coastline in southern Australia were battered to death on rocks before rescuers could save them. Officials from Tasmania state's Parks and Wildlife Service rushed Sunday in four-wheel-drive vehicles to the remote site at Sandy Cape after the long-finned pilot whales were spotted by air a day earlier.

A helicopter crew that arrived late Saturday found about a dozen of the whales injured but alive, said Warwick Brennan, a spokesman for the service.
Other officials and volunteers arrived by four-wheel-drive vehicle on Sunday and worked frantically to save those remaining, but they died, Brennan said.

The coastline is strewn with reefs and jagged rocks, making it much more dangerous for the stranded whales than if they had landed at a sandy beach, said Rosemary Gales, another wildlife service official.

"Because of the physical beating they take from stranding on rocks and surf, compared to sandy beach strandings, animals die more quickly," said Gales.

Officials in small boats steered about 30 whales that were part of the same pod as those stranded away from the bay where they went ashore. They were apparently responding to cries of distress from an injured whale and were in danger of becoming stuck too, Brennan said.
The operation comes one week after rescuers saved 11 pilot whales among more than 60 stranded on a beach in northwestern Tasmania, which is an island.

Strandings are not uncommon in Tasmania, where the whales pass by on their migration to and from Antarctic waters. It is not known why whales get stranded.

Iceland whale meat to arrive in Japan

30-11-2008 Sydney Morning Herald, Australia

Japan will allow imports of whale meat from Iceland for the first time since 1991, a report said. Nations across the world are signed up to an agreement not to hunt whales for commercial purposes but Japan said it was not breaking the accord and considered the trade as "a deal between private companies", Jiji Press reported.

Iceland announced in October 2006 it had authorised commercial whaling, making it only the second country after Norway to outright defy a 1986 moratorium.
An Icelandic company which has killed seven fin whales plans to export the meat to Japan, its boss has said in an interview with The Daily Telegraph published in early November.

Meanwhile the Japanese government has approved a plan to import whale meat submitted by a Japanese trading firm, Jiji said, citing unnamed government and other sources.

Japan officially complies with the International Whaling Commission (IWC) moratorium on commercial whaling. But it uses a loophole that allows countries to kill whales for research, with the meat ending up on dinner plates.
Japanese officials were not immediately available for comment.

Mass Whale Stranding off Tasmania's West Coast

29-11-2008 Department of Primary Industries and Water, Tasmania

About 80 whales have stranded in a remote area of Tasmania’s West Coast. Department of Primary Industries and Water Wildlife and Conservation Section Head Rosemary Gales said the whales, which are reported to be Long-finned Pilot Whales, were reported late this morning near Sandy Cape.

Locals with a tractor are pictured near part of a pod of stranded long-finned pilot whales and bottle-nosed dolphins at Sea Elephant Beach on Tasmania's King Island in Australia in this file photo. Scientists and wildlife officials are continuing to search for what may have caused a series of mass strandings which have left 169 whales and dolphins dead on Australian and New Zealand beaches in the past three days.
REUTERS/Mavis Burgess (Nov. 30th 2004 - http://www.shunpiking.com/)

“Because of the remoteness of the location we only have aerial observations of the mass stranding at this stage,” Dr Gales said.
“The aerial reports indicate the whales have unfortunately stranded on a rocky area of coastline and so have been very badly knocked around by the conditions.
“It is also unclear how long the animals have been there and reports at this stage indicate the majority of the whales are already dead.
“Aerial observations indicate there was possibly only 12 animals still alive.”

Dr Gales said access to the area is difficult but two crews from the Department’s Wildlife and Marine Conservation Section were heading into the area.
“Because of the remote location our crews aren’t expected to arrive until tomorrow morning at this stage,” Dr Gales said.
“Because of the remoteness of the site and the difficult terrain it means that they are limited in the amount of rescue gear able to be taken on site.”

Dr Gales said once on site they would make an assessment dependent on the local conditions and the conditions of the animals.
“Unfortunately the location of the stranding and conditions of the animals as well as the weather conditions make this a much more challenging stranding event than what was encountered last week near Stanley.
“Because of the physical beating they take from stranding on rocks and surf, compared to sandy beach strandings, animals die much more quickly.”

Dr Gales said the animals rescued during the stranding event near Stanley last week still appear in good condition and at last report were about 60 kilometres off shore north from Bridport in Bass Strait.
“Unfortunately summer is a peak period for stranding events and it isn’t unusual to get double stranding events close to each other.
“It is important for people to remember to report any whale activity to us on our whale hotline which is 0427 WHALES.”

Lawaai dierenvrienden ADC verstoort jaarlijks congres Belgische dierproefnemers in Charleroi

Luid protest bij conferentie dierproefnemers!

Gezellig samenzijn verstoord!

28-11-2008 Anti Dierproeven Coalitie Belgium

Nieuw nationaal park Kameroen moet zeer zeldzame Cross River gorilla's beschermen

Kameroen neemt zeldzame gorilla's in bescherming

World’s fastest animal, in race for survival,

to get added UN-backed protection

28-11-2008 UN News Centre

28 November 2008 – The critically endangered cheetah, the world’s fastest land animal, is set to obtain added international protection next week at a United Nations-backed conference seeking to strengthen conservation of species that often cross national borders.

The cheetah, which reaches speeds of up to 120 kilometres per hour but is now racing against extinction with only about 10,000 adults surviving, is among some 30 endangered land and marine animals on the agenda of the 9th conference of parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS).

“Species that migrate across countries and continents are facing ever greater hurdles from loss of habitat and feeding grounds to unsustainable use and the unfolding and often complex threats emerging from climate change,” said Achim Steiner, Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) which administers the CMS.

“Indeed the world is currently facing a sixth wave of extinctions mainly as a result of human impacts. Urgent and accelerated action is needed to ensure that a healthy, productive and functioning planet is handed on to the next generation,” he added.

More than 100 government representatives at the five-day conference, beginning Monday in Rome, will consider proposals to strengthen conservation by putting the animals on CMS appendix I, listing them as in danger of extinction, or appendix II, listing them as suffering from unfavourable conservation status and in need of international cooperation. Some of these animals are important economically, providing a significant source of tourism revenue.

Proposed steps range from tackling over-hunting to removing physical obstacles on the animals’ migratory paths such as border fences to calling for regional agreements for protection.

Migratory animals to be considered include:
The cheetah, which has suffered a dramatic 90 per cent decline over the past century, becoming extinct in 18 countries of its original range, with less than 10,000 adults surviving in Africa and a meagre 50 in Asia, mainly around Iran's Kavir desert, due to severe habitat loss, over-hunting and poor breeding in captivity.

The Saiga antelope (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saiga_Antelope), which used to roam the Eurasian steppes but is now on the brink of extinction for the second time in just 100 years. After being nearly exterminated in the 1920s, numbers went up to 2 million thanks to Soviet conservation efforts, but have now shrunk to just 50,000 due to hunting and obstacles on migration routes. Today they are confined to isolated pockets in Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Mongolia.

Barbary sheep (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbary_Sheep), agile climbers of the Sahara and Sahel region of Africa, are now also threatened by unsustainable and illegal hunting. The species is proposed for appendix I, committing all parties to prohibit hunting and removing obstacles to their migration like fences or habitat conversion.

The African Wild Dog (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_Wild_Dog) has been eradicated from Western and most of Central Africa, with fewer than 8,000 estimated to survive due to conflict with humans and other animals, as well as infectious diseases. Fences on migration paths also endanger them. The proposed Appendix II listing would call on nations to establish regional agreements for their protection.

Other animals include seven species of whales, dolphins and porpoises, such as the reclusive Irrawaddy dolphins (http://www.panda.org/about_wwf/what_we_do/species/about_species/species_factsheets/cetaceans/irrawaddy_dolphin/index.cfm)which used to inhabit coastal areas and estuaries throughout south-east Asia. Today, habitat loss, live capture, entanglement in fishing nets, electrocution and boat collisions put the survival of the remaining small populations at risk.

The Black Sea Bottlenose Dolphin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bottlenose_dolphin), unique to one of the most degraded marine environments in the world, has also suffered from uncontrolled hunting and by-catch, despite the ban on cetacean fishery in the sea since 1983, while the West African Manatee, one of the world’s most camera-shy species, has been endangered by their only significant threat, humankind, due to poaching, habitat loss and other environmental impacts.

Other animals on the agenda include three shark species, spiny dogfish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiny_Dogfish), and seven birds, such as the Saker falcon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saker_Falcon), prized as hunting companions by royalty and the aristocracy in Central Asia; the Egyptian vulture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egyptian_Vulture), poisoned by feeding on carcasses of feral animals laced with pesticides; and the Peruvian tern (http://www.arkive.org/peruvian-tern/sterna-lorata/image-G20065.html), threatened by disturbance in its breeding grounds from human activity.

“The Convention on Migratory Species is an important part of our international cooperative response to such challenges. It reflects the shared responsibility of nations for these species as each year they attempt their epic journeys across continents and oceans,” Mr. Steiner said.

Robert Hepworth, Executive Secretary of UNEP-CMS, added: “Many migratory species are now important parts of the local and international economy, generating income and supporting livelihoods via industries such as tourism. For example, an estimated 150,000 people visit the Serengeti (in Tanzania and Kenya) annually in order to see its famous wildlife. Based on 2003 figures, the park generates income of $5.5 million from tourists.”

Aartsbisschop Desmond Tutu start nieuwe wereldwijde anti walvisjacht campagne

Global anti-whaling campaign launched

28-11-2008 TVNZ, New Zealand

Archbishop Desmond Tutu launched a new global anti-whaling campaign which seeks to ban all whaling. "What makes it even worse is the brutality (of whale hunting)," said Tutu, a Nobel peace laureate, at the launch.

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), which backs the campaign, says whales are usually hunted with grenade-tipped harpoons that explode inside the animal.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu on the Greenpeace ship MV Esperanza in 2002.

The world imposed a moratorium on all whale hunts in 1986 after many species were driven towards extinction by decades of exploitation for meat, oil and whalebone.
Japan, Norway and Iceland still hunt minke whales, arguing they are plentiful.

The campaign has other high profile supporters including British actor Pierce Brosnan.

in Hasselt

Fraser Island dingoes 'starving' with electrified

grids, fences

FRASER Island residents claim dingoes have become emaciated and weak since the electrification of grids and fences on the island. More than 100 dingoes live on the World Heritage-listed island but, since electrification began several weeks ago, the animals now have limited food sources.

TAKING its toll ... a snapshot shows a malnourished dingo
loitering around a dump on Fraser Island.

Photographs taken in the past week show malnourished dingoes on the island, including one animal loitering around a rubbish bin at the Eurong dump looking for food.

Island resident Bree Jashin said she believed the management of the dingoes needed to be investigated to help improve the health and wellbeing of the animals."There needs to be a public inquiry into the dingo management strategy on Fraser Island," Ms Jashin said."The park rangers have very little understanding of this animal."

But the Queensland Environmental Protection Agency defended the dingoes' wellbeing and said the animals were "not starving"."It is important to remember that dingoes in the wild are of a naturally lean build," an EPA spokesperson said.

"The hierarchical population structure means the dominant animals are likely to prevent access to food by subordinates, and this means there will always be some animals that are in poorer condition than others."Residents sighted the dingoes bringing rats to their pups before electrification of the fences and grids but now some of the dingo mothers are believed to be too weak to feed their young.

Dingo management has been an issue since Fraser Island visitor Clinton Gage, 9, died after an attack in 2001.

Animals face starvation at Chipangali

28-11-2008 By Mphokuhle Mabhena, The Chronicle, Zimbabwe

MORE than 300 animals, birds and reptiles at Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage, about 30 kilometres from Bulawayo, are facing starvation as the institution is struggling to provide food. The wildlife sanctuary, which largely depends on donations and gate takings from visitors, is facing severe food shortages.

Animals affected by the food shortage include 28 lions that need at least two cattle per meal, as well as herbivores such as rhinoceros, which require about 200 kilogrammes of leaves daily. The institution’s freezers broke down more than a month ago, making it difficult to preserve meat.

This has forced the authorities to feed the carnivores with all the meat as soon as it arrives from donors.

Mr Vivian Wilson, the director of research at the wildlife orphanage, yesterday confirmed in an interview that the institution was facing serious problems.“The orphanage, like any other sectors in the country, is battling to survive and we just have to do the best we can to survive,” he said. Mr Wilson, who is also the founder of the institution, said sourcing foodstuffs such as fruits, vegetables, maize and meat for the animals had become a major challenge as most donations were coming in the form of cheques. Most businesses and parastatals across the country are not accepting cheques as a form of payment.

When Chronicle visited the usually busy sanctuary, located along the Bulawayo-Beitbridge Road, there was no activity, with hardly a visitor in sight. Mrs Nicky Wilson, who runs the orphanage, said poachers and gold panners had invaded the institution and a female rhino was killed last month. “Some poachers shot and killed one of our rhinoceros last month, which was due to give birth in December, for its horn and they set snares for animals like bucks for food. We have also had cases of gold panners who have resorted to using our game park dam for panning purposes,” she said.

This is a weekly process at the Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage in Zimbabwe.
Volunteers Bath and give a mud pack to four Rhino.

Mrs Wilson, who is Mr Wilson’s daughter-in-law, said the panners were causing siltation and the dam could soon run out of drinking water for the animals. “We also experience massive power cuts as we can go for up to three weeks without electricity. We fail to pump water for the animals since our borehole operates on electricity, thereby putting animals at risk of dying of thirst,” she said.

Mrs Wilson revealed that Chipangali has embarked on a farming programme, which will see them growing crops such as maize, grass, and other varieties of trees for the animals.“We are appealing for donations such as old blankets, sheets, food, milk, towels and anything that can be of use to the animals,” she said.Other basics needed include vegetables, overalls for the workers, cages as well as labour for the basic maintenance at the institution.

Those who wish to help the institution can get in touch with Mrs Wilson on mobile number 0912 354 780 or visit the Bulawayo offices situated at house number 123 Edenfield Road in Matsheumhlope.

The Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage was founded in 1973 and has a research office in the city as well as a children’s wildlife and environmental education programme. It is a home for lions, leopards, baboons, snakes, owls, crocodiles and many other animal species.

(syd)

Amerikaanse 'studenten en arbeiders' dierenrechtenorganisatie steekt auto proefdieronderzoeker Goran Lacan Universiteit Los Angeles (VS) in brand

UCLA Vivisector's Auto Burned by Animal

Liberation Activists

Targeting Mainstream Activists Having Predicted Effect on Tactics Used to Free Imprisoned Primates

27-11-2008 Animal Liberation Press Office, USA

Los Angeles, CA: In an anonymous communiqué received by the Press Office this week, Students and Workers for the Liberation of UCLA Primates claim to have burned an automobile belonging to primate vivisector Goran Lacan.

UCLA confirms the destruction of two vehicles, but in deceptive and dishonest wording, their press release states the vehicles destroyed were not in front of Lacan's home and therefore were not his. University flaks also try to portray Lacan as a "former" primate vivisector, ignoring publications both this year and last in which he principally authored studies detailing the torture and murder of vervet monkeys and lemurs.

The current communiqué reads, in part:
"The holidays are coming up and Santa was checking his list twice to see whose been naughty or nice. The name Goran Lacan caught Santa's eye as having done abominable things to small monkeys inside the labs at UCLA. Santa had his elf or in this case, alf, check Lacan's department lab records.

Santa discovered that Goran Lacan studied human eating disorders like anorexia and obesity in vervet monkeys by implanting electrodes into their skulls and backs and invoking painful stimuli. After a long period of time, he killed them. So early November 20th when Santa was out delivering pieces of coal to those who were naughty, one of his stops was Goran Lacan's house at XXXX Greenfield Avenue in Los Angeles.

When Santa went into his knapsack to pull out his last piece of coal he discovered that there wasn't any left, just a lone incendiary device. Santa thought this was the perfect gift to give a monster like Lacan and placed it under his car."

(To read the full communiqué, visit http://www.animalliberationpressoffice.org/communiques_home.htm)

Press Officer Dr. Jerry Vlasak, a medical doctor and former vivisector, is not surprised at UCLA's attempt to deceive their students and the public. "These are typical lies and deception that UCLA and other apologists for animal abuse trot out to hide their complicity in the unnecessary imprisonment, torture and killing of non-human animals. As they continue to throw away scarce medical research funding on antiquated and largely useless animal experimentation, other centers continue to utilize modern medical techniques that are far more likely to result in cures for human patients like those I and other clinicians treat daily."

Combined with additional acts of sabotage at UC campuses in Berkeley, San Francisco and Santa Cruz, activists appear to be responding to years of unsuccessful attempts at dialogue with school officials by mainstream activists, who are now themselves being imprisoned using unethical legal attacks. A Los Angeles protester faces sentencing next month for purportedly violating a UCLA-obtained restraining order in which she was neither named nor made aware of, simply for distributing flyers decrying the imprisonment and murder of non-human primates.

Vivisection, or experimentation on animals, is not only an evil that is perpetrated on millions of innocent animals, but is also scientifically fraudulent. While 20,000 children worldwide die every month from the effects of unclean water, vivisectors in University of California laboratories are wasting money addicting primates to crystal methamphetamines, gluing coils to the globes of their eyes and doing other inhumane and painful experiments on other species of animals, including cats, dogs, pigs, mice and birds.

In a civilized society, and with better alternatives to animal experimentation, US academia should be on the fore-front of good, solid, non-animal-based research that could save the lives of children and adults alike. Instead, greedy "scientists"continue business as usual by mutilating non-human animals; it seems that until they begin doing ethical and scientifically-valid non-animal research, vivisectors will continue to be a target for those who are moral, courageous and heroic.

Apendeskundige Marc van Roosmalen weer vrij man in Brazilië - Van Roosmalen vrij, maar berooid

Apendeskundige Van Roosmalen vrij

27-11-2008 Algemeen Dagblad

DAY OF ACTION AGAINST BRISTOL-MYERS

SQUIBB IN ARGENTINA

27-11-2008 SHAC, UK

On Monday, November 24th a protest took place at the premises of Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) located in the neighborhood of Nuñez, in South-east Argentina.

We took part in a symbolic protest together in conjunction with fellow South American activists of CDA (Chile) and Venezuela, in solidarity with activists across the world for SHAC on the International Day of Action against BMS, a primary top ten customer of HLS, of whom give 45% of HLS's revenue.

With approximately fifteen activists, posters and banners were displayed in front of the BMS premises, with loud chanting by megaphone while explaining why we were there demonstrating, telling of the torture and abuse carried out in their name and according to their propaganda in pursuit of a medicine that "extend and enhance human life with quality and integrity."

The protest was peaceful and finished calmly, with support of the passers-by.

Bijna 500 wilde dieren gevonden in gebouw in Lima (Peru) - Dieren, waaronder veel parkieten en papegaaien, bestemd voor zwarte markt

Nearly 500 wild animals seized in downtown Lima

27-11-2008 Living in Peru, Jobana Soto, Peru

Peruvian officials raided an old building in downtown Lima where 478 wild animals were held in unsanitary conditions without food and water. Officials believe the animals were being held to be sold in the black market.

Among the animals confiscated were 434 canary-winged parakeets, seven yellow-footed tortoises, four monkeys, a blue-and-yellow macaw, 17 black-headed parrots, four red-fronted parrots, five white-eyed parakeets, four grey-cheeked parakeets and a green parakeet.

Peru’s National Institute of Natural Resources (INRENA), the municipality of Lima, the national police and Office for Environmental Issues all took part in the raid. According to Andina news agency, the sale of wild animals is prohibited under Peruvian law despite local merchants in Lima’s downtown continuing in the sale of monkeys, macaws, parrots, parakeets, turtles, frogs and fish.

New Zealand military won't track whalers

27-11-2008 United Press International

WELLINGTON, New Zealand, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- The new defense minister in New Zealand says that he is unlikely to use to the air force to monitor the Japanese whaling fleet.

"Obviously we need to know what is happening down there but at this stage it's unlikely we will use the air force," Defense Minister Wayne Mapp told The Dominion Post. "I'm not really sure what we will be doing."

While he was the National Party spokesman on defense, Mapp urged the Labor government to use an air force plane, saying that the country "must put our money where our mouth is" when it comes to whaling.

The Australian government doesn't plan to send a patrol ship because the Japanese are expected to be in an area of the Antarctic seas where New Zealand is responsible for search and rescue.

The Steve Irwin, a Sea Shepherd ship named after the Australian celebrity reptile expert, is in Brisbane preparing to go to sea to try to stop the whalers. The crew this year includes movie star Darryl Hannah.

A handful of activists armed with megaphones and placards named and shamed the workers who’re proud to use Huntingdon to test their disgusting herbicides, pesticides and weed killer on innocent beagle puppies. As we know from previous demonstrations at this site, they often spray their neighbours gardens with their unnatural chemicals, letters have even been sent to Syngenta asking them to stop but is it really that surprising that these letters have all been ignored. No regard for humans or animals.

We haven’t paid Bayer a visit in a while, so with one literally down the road from Bristol Myers Squibb we thought it was definitely time we gave them a bit more attention. With them in the same building as two other companies, there was an amazing amount of support from their neighbouring companies. With the local public stating that they would confront Bayer for supporting such a horrific company and having so little respect for their customer’s safety.

Judge OKs plan to kill sea lions at Bonneville Dam

26-11-2008 Associated Press and KGW.com, NWCN, USA

PORTLAND - A federal judge says the government can proceed with plans to kill up to 85 California sea lions a year at Bonneville Dam, where they gather annually to plunder the spring chinook salmon run.

KGW photo
Sea lion C-404 has managed to find a way through
gates designed to keep him out of the Bonneville Dam area.

The Humane Society of the United States had sought to block the killings, claiming among other things that the sea lion predation was relatively insignificant compared to threats such as dams, fishing and hungry birds.

A Humane Society official, Sharon Young, said Wednesday the group will appeal.

U.S. District Court Judge Michael Mosman said in September that he hoped to rule quickly enough for the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to decide the case before next spring.
The Humane Society filed a motion for the injunction back in March of 2008.

Those favoring the removal said the sea lions are damaging salmon runs listed under the Endangered Species Act and protected at great expense.

The states estimate the sea lions eat up to about 4 percent of the spring chinook run as it schools at the base of the dam to pass through fish ladders en route to upriver spawning grounds.

The animals are protected by the Marine Mammals Protection Act of 1972 but an amendment allows for lethal removal of some animals at the request of the states.

While the species was nearly wiped from hunting by the 1930s, it has prospered in recent decades and now is thought to number about 240,000.
The authorization to kill or remove sea lions also has strong support from Columbia River Indian tribes. Oregon and Washington with the support of Idaho, made the request in 2006.

Kangaroos found in baggage hold

26-11-2008 News24, South Africa

Warsaw - Polish border guards said on Wednesday they had foiled an attempt to smuggle kangaroos, miniature ponies and 11 pheasants in a passenger bus across Poland's border with Ukraine.

"It was a regular bus with 30 or so passengers aboard," Poland's national border guard spokesperson Andrzej Wojcik said on Wednesday.
"Everything seemed to be fine until we opened the baggage hold," he added.
"You can imagine the surprise of the border guards when they found two small kangaroos, five ponies and eleven pheasants locked up in cages," Wojcik said.

"Both the kangaroos and ponies are miniatures, measuring 50 to 60 centimetres.
"One of the ponies is probably pregnant,"
he added.

The Ukrainian bus driver had insisted he did not realise he was doing anything illegal, Wojcik said.
He told the border guards the animals had been delivered to him by a stranger in Warsaw and were to be handed over to someone at the final destination in Lviv, Ukraine.

The animals were examined by veterinarians and fed by border guards.
"They are in good health and will be put in good hands," Wojcik said.

Preventieve maatregelen staan voorop. Doden is het uiterste middel.''

Opzichters Park Virunga in Congo terug naar hun berggorilla's

Gorilla's overleven oorlogvoering Congo

terrorisme

Sebastien Lorca, voorzitter van ‘Dignitè Animale’ (http://www.dignitè-animale.com/);
Johan Couderc, lid van ‘Dignitè Animale’;

Zoo solves mystery of celibate polar bears

26-11-2008 CNN

TOKYO, Japan (CNN) -- Puzzled zookeepers in northern Japan have discovered the reason why their attempts to mate two polar bears kept failing: Both are female. A 4-year-old polar bear sent to impregnate a female polar bear at a zoo in Kushiro was found to be female as well.

The municipal zoo in the city of Kushiro in Hokkaido brought in a polar bear cub three years ago. They named it Tsuyoshi, after the popular baseball outfielder Tsuyoshi Shinjo, and waited until it reached reproductive age.
In June, the zoo introduced Tsuyoshi to its resident bear, an 11-year-old female named Kurumi, and waited for sparks to fly.

A 4-year-old polar bear sent to impregnate a female polar bear
at a zoo in Kushiro was found to be female as well.

But much to the disappointment of zookeepers, Tsuyoshi never made any amorous advances toward Kurumi.

Earlier this month, zookeepers put Tsuyoshi under anesthesia to get to the bottom of the matter. That's when they made their discovery: Tsuyoshi is a female.
Still, the Kushiro zoo plans to keep Tsuyoshi because he -- or rather, she -- has become immensely popular with visitors.

"I have rather mixed feelings, given the need for breeding, but Tsuyoshi is an idol for Kushiro," Yoshio Yamaguchi, head of the Kushiro zoo, told Japan's Kyodo news agency.
Tsuyoshi will even keep her name.
"We will not be changing it to 'Tsuyoko' since it is loved by citizens (by the current name)," Yamaguchi said.
"Ko" is a common suffix for a Japanese female name.

Meanwhile, Tsuyoshi's "brother," who was adopted by another zoo, has also turned out to be female, Kyodo reported.

Is medical testing with animals the right thing

to do?

26-11-2008 Reported by: Linda Hurtado Email: lhurtado@abcactionnews.com
ABC Action News, Tampa Bay, USA

LOS ANGELES, CA -- Each year in the name of medical progress, scientists experiment with one-hundred million mice, rats, monkeys, fish and dogs. They expose the animals to medicines and therapies that could become the next cancer killer or depression fighter. But are the tests a move forward or backward?

Inside the rooms, behind locked cages, 13 dogs, 13 pigs, 1,800 rats, 800 Zebrafish and 9,000 mice are all born for one purpose -- medical research.
Veterinarian John Young runs the research labs at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

He opened the doors to our cameras to show his side of animal research. He said these rats are long-term survivors of brain cancer -- the same cancer that will kill some of the young patients on the pediatric oncology floor at his hospital. “The prospect of that wipes away all doubt in my mind of what I'm doing is not only worthwhile, but a very noble use of animals," he said. With progress comes controversy. Home video was taken at a leading university medical center after a whistle-blowing veterinarian alleged lab animals suffered cruelty and neglect.

Catherine Dell’Orto is a Veterinarian with Sabino Veterinary Care in Tucson, Arizona. “It was just horrible. It was horrific." Catherine was responsible for the care of the animals. ”The baboons had their eyes taken out and they were induced in a stroke," she said.

Dell'Orto complained to her supervisors and the U-S-D-A. When she failed to get their attention, she contacted PETA. An internal investigation found inadequate veterinary care in some of the animals used and the university implemented reforms based on some of the complaints. She said, “I wonder, are we really advancing ourselves as a culture by doing this?"
Young replied, “I would submit that if you would disallow the use of animals in medical research, medical progress wouldn't slow. It would stop and it would reverse."

An ethical and scientific challenge for researchers and animal lovers around the globe.
Regulations on animal testing have been tightened in recent years. A Tufts University study found in 1970 50-million animals was used for testing. Today that number is down to about 14 million.

Wild elephants kill man, destroy house in

Aceh village

26-11-2008 The Jakarta Post, Indonesia

Many residents of a rural village in Aceh Jaya district have fled their homes in fear of a herd of wild elephants that has invaded their area, killed one person and destroyed a farmer's house in the past few days, Antara news agency reported. The herd, estimated to consist of 13 elephants, emerged from a nearby forest and entered Cot Pengee village in Aceh Jaya last Friday.

A local community leader, Iskandar Musa, said the villagers have tried to drive the animals away with traditional methods like making loud sounds but to no avail. Instead, the elephants became more daring with one of them even given to chasing people on sight.

"The elephants became increasingly aggressive, especially after they had taken a local resident and killed him. He was Muhammad Wahi, 30. His dead body was found 30 meters from his home," Musa said, adding the incident happened on Saturday. The herd also rampaged through hectares of farmland and plantations doing serious damage to crops.

On Tuesday they attacked and obliterated a house belonging to Kechik Din, another Cot Pangee village resident. There was no casualty in the elephant attack on Din's house because he and his family had moved to another village two days before. Separately, Aceh Jaya Deputy District Head Zamzami A.

Rani said he had called on the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSAD) of Aceh Province, for help to deal with the wild elephants. Many Cot Pangee residents decided to evacuate to safer places. Farmers in the village said they would poison the elephants if the authorities fail to solve the problem. (dre)

Honden broodfokkers in de staat New York (VS) mishandelen de dieren

The Torturing of Dogs at Some Breeding Facilities

25-11-2008 By Jennifer Stanonis, WKBW TV, New York, USA

Commercial mass dog breeding facilities are all over the nation and here in New York State. Dog breeding is a legal business where dogs are bred for profit. Most of these facilities are compliant with the law but some take a turn for the worse and animals aren't treated humanely. These have been called 'puppy mills'. The biggest problems include: inbreeding, minimal veterinary care, poor quality of food and shelter, overcrowded cages, and even the killing of unwanted animals.
These facilities can be found in Western New York.

There are several groups of people that have spent years getting dogs out of these dog breeding facilities and into a domesticated life as a pet in a home. One rescuer, Patty, tells of how her young female dog lived before buying its freedom. "She lived in a two by three foot metal crate her whole life and these crates were stacked three high and each dog that lived above the other dog would urinate or defecate on the other dogs... never walked on grass, never taken out of the cages." Patty said. "She has the best life now... a pet versus just stock."

The people in these rescue groups pay with their own money to get dogs out of breeding facilities including transportation, health care, food, and shelter. Some advocates even go to puppy mill auctions to buy the dogs. Several of those animals now have a home in Erie County after being bought from the breeding system and transported from states like Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Veterinarians who have cared for dogs coming out of 'puppy mills' notice many health problems. "We can tell that they've been living in a place that hasn't been cleaned regularly because they're soaked in urine, have stool feces stuck on their hair," one local vet said. "Are so skinny that it's heart breaking because you can see their ribs."

According to the New York State Department of Agriculture & Markets, breeders must have a state license and permit. The state conducts annual unannounced inspections of commercial dog breeding facilities to make sure they are in compliance with the law. "How those animals are kept and housed, whether they have adequate water and shelter being provided to them, the health of those animals, whether they've been seen by a veterinarian, and whether those records are available," Jessica Chittenden, with the Department of Agriculture, said. "They do need to be able to move around freely, get some exercise, and have adequate shelter so that they're not in the cage all of the time."

Some of the facilities that have failed inspection just this year are in Western New York. If a facility doesn't pass an inspection, consequences can include fines and the loss of a license and permit. "The majority of dog breeders in New York State are in compliance with the law, they are upstanding businesses that provide healthy pets for consumers. And unfortunately there are a few bad apples in the bunch," Chittenden said.

While the law helps to monitor the activity in these dog breeding facilities, there are a couple gaps. The Department of Agriculture says there's nothing in the law stating the number of times a dog can be bred or how much exercise a dog must have. "Companion animals must be kept in adequate shelter and also be able to move around and have exercise, but it does not define exactly what that means," Chittenden said. "We are also limited by the law and therefore we ask consumers while they are pet shopping to communicate with us and to let us know if they see any problems so that we can follow up and be sure that these pets are being cared for in a humane fashion."

Many of the puppies bred in these dog breeding facilities end up in pet stores. It's recommended that if you're buying a dog or puppy make sure you ask to see all the paperwork for the animal, which includes whether that establishment purchased or bred that dog or puppy, all health certificates, and veterinary examinations.

If you'd like more information on rescued 'puppy mill' dogs you can call 716-598-1199.

Wellfleet: 30 cold-stunned turtles rescued

Dertig zeer zeldzame Kemp Ridley zeeschildpadden door kou aangespoeld op stranden Cape Cod, Massachusetts (VS) - 19 Schildpadden dood

Cold causes more stranded sea turtles on Cape Cod

25-11-2008 THE ASSOCIATED PRESS, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, USA

WELLFLEET, Mass. -- A cold snap has caused a high number of endangered sea turtles to wash ashore dead on Cape Cod beaches. Thirty Kemp's Ridley sea turtles - the world's most endangered sea turtles - have been reported on the beaches since Thursday. Nineteen were dead.

Tony LaCasse, spokesman for the New England Aquarium in Boston, called the mortality rate "way off the charts."
Sea turtles suffering from hypothermia often wash ashore in November and December. When the animals' heart rate and body temperature falls, they become immobile. Wind blows them to shore, where they risk freezing to death.

Volunteers walk the beaches to look for stranded turtles. Survivors are brought to the aquarium, where workers try to bring up their body temperature.

Circus Herman Renz overtreedt volgens Belgische dierenrechtenorganisatie dierenwelzijnswetgeving - Geen buitenverblijven olifant en paarden

GAIA vraagt Sint-Niklaas wilde dieren in circussen

(belga/bdr)

Oppositie Australië wil dat regering juridische stappen neemt tegen Japanse walvisjacht

Aust opposition calls for action on whaling

25-11-2008 New Zealand Herald, New Zealand

Australia must pursue legal action against Japan to stop the hunting of whales, the opposition says. With the Japanese fleet on its way to Antarctica with plans to kill about 1000 whales, the opposition wants to know what has happened to the Government's threat to take legal action.

Labor last year threatened to take Japan to the International Court of Justice. But no legal action has been launched, and opposition environment spokesman Greg Hunt said it was a "slap in the face" to Australians.

Environment Minister Peter Garrett said Labor had only promised to consider taking legal action.

Day Without Fur in Poland

25-11-2008 Polskie Radio

Various protest actions and educational campaigns are being conducted throughout the country to mark 'Day Without Fur'. The organizers of such events in all major cities are the Empatia Association (http://empatia.pl/) and Viva!Polska magazine.

Magdalena Plonka from Empatia told Polish Radio that the aim of the countrywide action is to make people realize the extent of suffering which animals are subjected to and how many are killed out of shear greed for money and in order to satisfy the vanity of some.

‘At least 20 foxes, 150 chinchillas or 8 young seals need to be killed to make one fur coat. Annually, some 20 million animals are killed in Poland alone, only for the sake of someone’s image,' she said.

Magdalena Plonka added that what is equally appalling are the horrid conditions in which the animals are kept on breading farms and the barbarous methods of killing them with only one objective in mind – to save their precious skin intact.

EU neemt binnendringende diersoorten in

het vizier

25-11-2008 Agrarisch Dagblad

NYSE Euronext vesting vanwege komst

dierenvrienden

25-11-2008 Ravage Digitaal

"Euronext handelt in aandelen voor HLS (Huntingdon Life Sciences).

'In België lopen wij altijd tien jaar achter', zegt Verschaeve.

Chef hospitalised as turtle escapes cooking pot

in Hong Kong

25-11-2008 The Sun, Malaysia

Hong Kong (Nov 25, 2008) - A restaurant chef ended up in hospital as a turtle bit his foot to escape the cooking pot in a Hong Kong restaurant, a news report said Tuesday.

The 60-centimetre wattle-necked, soft-shelled turtle sank its teeth into the chef's foot, during a dash for freedom as it was about to be put in boiling water on Monday, the South China Morning Post reported.

The chef was taken to hospital with a suspected broken toe, while the turtle - a delicacy worth hundreds of US dollars - was put back in a cage, having successfully won a temporary reprieve.

The owner of the restaurant in Hong Kong's Shau Kei Wan district told the newspaper that the turtle, eaten for it supposed medicinal value, would now be cooked and served up on Thursday.

Boeren Terschelling maken zich zorgen over gevolgen aanwezigheid herten

Boerenprotest tegen illegale herteninvoer

25-11-2008 Leeuwarder Courant

Call of the wild: Scientists use mobile phones to

eavesdrop on koala conversations

25-11-2008 By Daily Mail Reporter, The Daily Mail, UK

Scientists are using mobile phones to eavesdrop on koalas in an attempt to translate what they are saying to each other. The researchers placed mobiles in the trees of a koala territory to record the marsupials' distinctive bellows. They hope studying the animals' mysterious communications will reveal ways to help keep up population numbers, under threat from destruction of traditional habitats.

Marsupial mobile: The phones are being used to record
koalas' mysterious bellows and transmit them to scientists for analysis.

The mobiles, charged by solar power and car batteries, are programmed to record for two minutes every half hour on St Bees Island off north-east Australia, then transmit the recordings to a computer at the University of Queensland in Brisbane.

'Koala bellows can go from really quite short, sharp, and quite agitated sounding bellows to long, slow, deep bellows that can last for over a minute,' said researcher Bill Ellis.
'Interestingly most of the bellowing seems to occur around midnight, not around dawn or dusk when we thought it might've occurred,' he said on Tuesday.

Mr Ellis said he was studying whether male koalas communicate by bellowing to each other to mark out territory and whether bellowing is used to attract females during breeding season.

Scientist Bill Ellis is carrying out
the research into koala calls.

The koalas of St Bees have also been tagged with satellite tracking devices to monitor their movements
'Over the breeding season males are quiet active at the start but their movements die down and females have a spike in movement somewhere in the breeding season,' said Mr Ellis.
'After a male and female encounter, and we can't see what they are doing, the female lets out a high-pitched scream and immediately after the male emits a loud bellow.'

Mr Ellis said results from his study could help manage koala populations by informing wildlife officials when is the best time to introduce new animals to a population and when is best time to allow changes to koala habitats such as urban development.

Deadly sea ice closes in on 400 narwhals

As last breathing holes in ice disappear, more tusked whales than originally thought face certain death

25-11-2008 Ed Struzik, The Edmonton Journal, Canada

EDMONTON - As many as 400 narwhals could be trapped in the ice north of Baffin Island -- far more than originally estimated -- making it one of the biggest strandings ever seen in the Arctic. The narwhals were spotted last week by Inuit hunters snowmobiling on sea ice 17 kilometres north of the community. Estimates at the time suggested about 200 whales got trapped after ice moved in or formed quickly, preventing them from reaching open water.

Federal Fisheries and Oceans officials gave the Inuit in Pond Inlet the go-ahead to start killing the whales last week when it appeared nothing short of an icebreaker could save the whales from eventually drowning.

Narwhals in ice holes.

That harvest was supposed to have wrapped up by the weekend. The narwhals, however, keep surfacing, say several people who have been on the scene.
Inuit hunters from Pond Inlet resumed harvesting the narwhals with guns and harpoons Monday after spending most of Sunday trying to make the breathing holes larger.

The whales are trying to breathe through about eleven holes in the ice, most no bigger than a desk. In the panic to reach the holes, the larger adult whales have accidentally pushed young calves up onto the sea ice on at least two occasions.

"It's not a pretty sight," said Allan Hawkes, the Co-Op store manager in Pond Inlet who is selling the whale blubber to other Arctic communities and the ivory tusks to international buyers.
"I used to work on a killing line at a slaughter plant down south, so I'm kind of used to this sort of thing.
"The one good thing about this is, nothing is getting wasted. And if you think about it, this is really no different from the way we harvest farm animals down south. Virtually everything will find its way to someone's table."

A Fisheries official arrived on the scene Monday.
Some people are asking whether all options were explored, but Jayko Allooloo, president of the community's Hunters and Trappers Association, thinks there were no other options.
"The open water is nearly 50 kilometres away and there is no icebreaker in the area," he said, adding that the hunters are in communication with Fisheries officials daily.
"The holes are getting smaller and smaller and there is not much time for them to live. It looks to me like the narwhals have been trapped there for some time, because the ones we are pulling out have only about an inch and a half of fat on them. Normally at this time of year, you would see three inches. That means they haven't eaten for some time."

Narwhals are one of three species of whales that live in the Arctic year-round. Although not endangered, their range is limited to Hudson Bay, the eastern Arctic, Greenland and parts of Siberia.
Slightly smaller than the white beluga that grows up to five metres in length, narwhals are darker and the males have a distinctive tooth that can grow up to three metres long. It was once called the "unicorn of the sea."
The tooth, coveted by collectors, can sell for $1,500 or more.

Shot Narwhal with hunter waiting for passing Narwhals.

This is the third time in three years that whales have been trapped in the Arctic ice. In the last two years, beluga whales have been trapped in the sea ice near Tuktoyaktuk in the western Arctic.

When 39 whales were trapped two years ago, federal Fisheries officials flew to the scene to evaluate the situation. The department ended up paying hunters to harvest the animals.
Last year, the discovery of 80 stranded whales came too late to do anything but let nature take its course.
Whether environmental change is confusing the whales or simply more people are in the Arctic witnessing natural occurrences, no one knows. It could be a combination of both.

"It happens occasionally at Eclipse Sound east of here," said Allooloo.
"But no one in Pond Inlet remembers anything like this happening around here in at least 75 years. This is very new to us."
Allooloo says it will likely be Wednesday or Thursday before the harvest is completed.
Federal Fisheries officials did not respond to requests for comment.

Cats are dumped as credit crunch bites

25-11-2008By Saiqa Chaudhari, The Bolton News, UK

AN animal charity is struggling to cope with record numbers of pets being abandoned. Pets In Need says the credit crunch is making people dump their animals because they cannot afford to keep them.

So many pets are being abandoned by their owners that the charity’s Tottington shelter has no space to take any more, forcing committee member Dinah Hill to take in strays at her home in Bradshaw.

FRIENDS: Dinah Hill and Lucky who is hoping he lives up to his name.

Mrs Hill has had to convert parts of her home into a shelter, with cats taking up an entire utility room as well as a spare bedroom. She said: “Pets In Need has got a major problem at the moment with all the people who want us to take in their cats and kittens.
“I think owners are panicking because of the credit crunch and immediately thinking they cannot afford to keep their pets.
“I have never had so many cats living with me, but all the cat pens are full in the shelter.
“I have six young cats in the utility room and another cat with two kittens upstairs. We’re fortunate to have the space, but it’s a lot of work.”

Homes are desperately being sought for the cats, such as 18-months-old Baby and Tuppence, a three-year-old.
The two were taken to the charity after their owners split up. Both are staying at Mrs Hill’s home.
Their housemates include brothers Marmalade and Mustard, both two years old, who were left behind after their owners moved out from their home in Radcliffe. The cats were brought in by a passer-by who found them wandering in the street.

Mrs Hill said: “We would urge owners who are worried to contact organisations before abandoning their pets because they are panicking. Often they can be worrying unnecessarily and just need advice.
“A cat isn’t all that expensive to look after, but there’s a mistaken belief they can just fend for themselves.
“It would be nice if genuine people came forward who are willing to give a cat a loving, permanent home.”
Anyone who can provide a home should telephone 01204 852492.

Americans Love Bison, Don't Know the Risks

They Face

24-11-2008 Environment News Service

NEW YORK, New York, November 24, 2008 (ENS) - Americans are out of touch with the fact that the American bison, or buffalo, is in trouble as a wild species, but they do love them as an important symbol of their country, and as a meal on the dinner table.

These views were expressed in a public survey released by the Wildlife Conservation Society at a national conference on restoring bison populations in North America held last week in Rapid City, South Dakota.

The survey is part of an effort spearheaded by the American Bison Society, which is a program of the Wildlife Conservation Society, based at New York's Bronx Zoo.

The American Bison Society aims to achieve ecological restoration in the next 100 years by encouraging government agencies, conservation groups, ranchers, and others to do all they can to restore the bison's ecological role as an important species.

The national survey asked 2,000 Americans more than 50 questions about bison to gage public awareness about this iconic species, as conservationists grapple with how to best restore populations to the American West and elsewhere.
The survey showed that fewer than 10 percent understood how many bison remain in the United States.
More than 74 percent of those surveyed believe that bison are an extremely important living symbol of the American West, and more than half view the bison as emblematic as a symbol of America as whole.

Before European settlers arrived in North America, at least 30 million bison are estimated to have roamed the Great Plains and grasslands from Alaska to Mexico. Bison dominated the prairies for nearly 10,000 years, shaping the land with their grazing patterns and migrations.

They were wiped out by commercial hunting and habitat loss that resulted from the settlers' westward expansion.

While an estimated 500,000 bison remain in the United States, most of those animals live on private ranches, with only about 9,000 plains bison considered free-ranging in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. An additional 7,000 free-ranging wood bison live in Canada.

Today, the genetically purest descendants of those wild bison are the targets of a government campaign that has slaughtered over 5,000 wild bison since 1985. Domestic cattle have encroached into the bison's native range, which raises the specter of disease transmission from bison to cattle. Despite the fact that there has not been one case of Brucella abortus transmission from wild bison to cattle, bison are not tolerated outside Yellowstone National Park by Montana's livestock industry and the state and federal agencies that back them.

The National Park Service, U.S. Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Montana Department of Livestock permit and participate in the killing of American bison within and migrating from Yellowstone National Park.
Yet the Yellowstone population, unlike most other bison populations held in the public trust, are genetically pure Bison bison, unmixed with cattle breeds.

"The results of this survey clearly show that the American public wants more to be done to restore the bison," said Dr. Kent Redford of the Wildlife Conservation Society. "We know it will take decades of strategic planning and a wide group of stakeholders will need to take appropriate action."

Wildlife Conservation Society is calling on the federal government to better coordinate management of bison across federal agencies, take down barriers to the production and sale of ecologically raised bison meat, and work with Canada and Mexico on bison management.

Progress is already being made, Redford said. For example, last month, Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne announced an initiative that will work with state, tribal and agricultural interests to strengthen bison conservation efforts to help bison recover and thrive.
Forty percent of survey respondents said that they have tried eating bison and 83 percent of those said it tastes as good or better than beef.

Redford said, "The survey also showed that one road to bison conservation may be a pragmatic, market-based approach, namely to grow sustainable markets for wild, free-ranging bison meat."
The three-day conference entitled "Building blocks for bison ecological restoration," was co-sponsored by the Wildlife Conservation Society, American Prairie Foundation, Linden Trust for Conservation, The Nature Conservancy, Safari Club International, and World Wildlife Fund.
The conference was attended by more than 100 participants and covered all aspects of bison ecological restoration. It was attended by representatives from U.S. federal, state and Canadian agencies, private ranchers, and indigenous groups.

Ecological restoration will likely take a century, says the Wildlife Conservation Society, and will only be realized through collaboration with a broad range of public, private and indigenous partners.

Ecological restoration of North American bison would occur when large herds of plains and wood bison can move freely across extensive landscapes within all major habitats of their historic ranges, said Redford. It would include bison interacting with the fullest possible set of other native species, as well as inspiring, sustaining and connecting human cultures.

Naakt PETA protest tegen dierenleed in centrum Moskou (Rusland)

Girls strip off for animal rights

24-11-2008 Russia Today, Russia

Two activists have taken off their clothes in the centre of Moscow to protest against animal cruelty. They say standing naked in the cold is still infinitely better than what animals have to go through. “Love us, don't wear us”- is the message that activists Lisa Franzetta and Lauren Bowey were delivering when they stripped down to their underwear.

“It's nothing compared to what the animals go through. They're in cages in all weather conditions. In summer it's awful and hot, they have a terrible time cramped together. And in winter they have to suffer through conditions like this,” said Lauren.

Lisa is from California and Lauren is from Australia but they're ready to sacrifice the warm weather to try to make people stop wearing fur. “Animals die very painful deaths. Often their skins are pulled from their bodies when they are still fully conscious. And there's no excuse for killing them in the 20th century for fashion,” Lisa believes.

The two are members of PETA, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. PETA claims that medical experiments, factory farms, and the clothing and entertainment industries are the four areas where animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time. However, on the streets of Moscow, views are split on whether you can find a substitute for fur when temperatures drop way below zero.

“It's quite difficult without wearing fur. It's beautiful and it's necessary especially in our weather conditions,” one of the locals says. “Real fur can seduce any woman. You can't do anything about it. But if there was a substitute of the same quality - I'd take it,” another one adds.

Lisa and Lauren don't plan to give up anytime soon. Russia was their first stop, next is Finland and Iceland in their naked mission against fur. They’ve already taken part in similar protests in New York, Seoul, and other places throughout the world. In the U.S., where in many places winters are relatively mild, wearing fur might be seen just as an attempt to follow the fashion.

But the average yearly temperature of most of European Russia is below freezing. Northern Russia extends into the Arctic Circle. Many regions have half-a-year of snow cover over soil that is permanently frozen to adepth of several hundred metres. In Yakutia for instance average monthly temperature in winter is -40C. So some say that the Russian climate means that wearing a fur hat and coat is more a necessity than a status symbol.

TORN FROM THE WILD

24-11-2008 British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV)

The BUAV has obtained shocking never-seen-before footage of the trapping of wild monkeys in Cambodia destined for factory farms supplying the international research industry. Appallingly, the monkeys were even hunted inside a nature reserve in Cambodia — supposedly a place of safety. The hunters used catapults and beat the tree trunks with oars to scare the monkeys out of the trees and drive them into nets. Then screaming in terror, or rigid with fear, these highly intelligent creatures were grabbed by their tails, stuffed into bags and stored in the bottom of a boat before being sold to a dealer of a monkey farm.

The BUAV is working hard to block this trade in the countries where the monkeys are finally shipped. This campaign is vitally important if we are to break the chain of pain and misery — from the forests where the wild populations of monkeys live freely, to the breeding farms and, finally, the laboratories where they are imprisoned

Please help the BUAV end this cruel and sickening trade.

At a breeding farm, other monkeys are seen in bare metal cages — including nursing mothers with babies, bred to be sold to the research industry.
The film is further evidence of the appalling cruelty that continues to be inflicted on wild monkeys for the international research industry. It also unveils the exploitation of indigenous populations of macaques (this type of monkey) in Asia, the industrial style breeding of monkeys, and the poor conditions in which they are kept that often fail to meet international guidelines on animal welfare, and fail to meet the monkeys' complex psychological and behavioural needs.

The BUAV initiated the investigation as part of its campaign to expose the lifetime of suffering caused by the ever increasing demand for primates from animal research companies and institutions across the world. This investigation underlines that it is not only in labs that research primates suffer. It is important that public and politicians are made aware of this whole picture, particularly since important decisions about the use of primates in research are shortly to be made as the EU rules governing animal experiments are revised.

3. Write to the CITES Secretariat requesting it carries out an investigation into Cambodia's trade in macaques and, if the BUAV's findings are confirmed, then to encourage CITES members to suspend CITES related trade with Cambodia.

Filmactrice Liz Hurley in reclamecampagne Amerikaanse bonthandel Blackglama - PETA woedend

Liz Hurley stars in fur ad?

24-11-2008 This Is Bristol, UK

Liz Hurley has angered animal rights groups after agreeing to become the face of a fur company. The Austin Powers actress has signed up to promote American firm Blackglama, which produces mink, reports the Daily Mirror. And the model's move has sparked fury at animal rights organisation Peta.

Spokesman Robbie LeBlanc said it means the brunette's "wardrobe is now as dead as her film career".
"It's shocking that she's taking money to wear baby minks, who are skinned at six months old for Liz's luxuries," he said. "Millions of animals are electrocuted and skinned alive, suffering terribly for the production of fur. With so many fantastic faux furs available there is no excuse for the wearing of real fur."

And The Independent quotes Andrew Tyler, head of Animal Aid, as saying that "promoting fur is in keeping with Liz Hurley's life of facile self-indulgence".

He added: "This in an international company that would presumably want a public figure of some substance. Liz Hurley strikes me as a rather trivial and decorative figure. It shows how the fur companies and fashion houses that use fur are struggling to attract big names to advertise their brands."

Britse surfende labrador heeft 'cult' status verkregen...

Surfing Labrador gains cult status

A surfing Labrador has gained cult status by riding waves on its local beach.

24-11-2008 By Urmee Khan, Telegraph, UK

Three-year-old Harvey can be regularly seen surfing on Tynemouth beach near Newcastle-upon-Tyne with his owners. Owner Scott Pearson, 43, and his son James discovered Harvey's talent this summer as they were paddling out to sea and Harvey attempted to join in. After a few attempts, the dog managed to balance on the slippery board and now enjoys squatting on it and riding to shore.

Word of his feats spread and now Harvey rides a sponge board which was donated by a local surfing company, which is more buoyant and therefore easier to use, and he is now a firm favourite with passers-by.

James, 16, who is currently trying out for the British surfing team, said: "It all started when my Dad and I were out paddling on the board and Harvey just swam out to us and we put him on the board.
"He's the coolest, most exceptional dog I've ever come across.
"He was only about six months old when he started going into the water but he never showed any signs of wanting to jump on a board. He has always loved being in the water and has no fear of the sea," he said.
"He's a real natural and now everytime he is out on his board people stop and watch in amazement."

James, who lives in nearby Gosforth, hopes to make it into the British team.
He added: "Its just great that I can now take Harvey on the waves too - I just hope he doesn't get better that me."

More than 200 stray dogs killed in Baghdad

24-11-2008 The Associated Press, Daily News Los Angeles, USA

BAGHDAD - Baghdad authorities killed more than 200 stray dogs on Sunday, the opening day of a campaign to cull dog packs roaming the capital that was prompted by a spate of fatal attacks on residents.

Three teams of veterinarians and police officers used poisoned meat and rifles to kill the animals, said Dr. Hassan Chaloub, an official at the veterinary hospital supervising the effort. He said the capital has no dog shelters.

The campaign started Sunday in western Baghdad and will move to the eastern half of the city early next year.

Thirteen people died in August alone in the capital after being attacked by dogs, according to Baghdad's provincial council.

Australian officials say rescued whales now safe

at sea

24-11-2008 Agence France Presse

SYDNEY (AFP) — Wildlife officials Monday said rescue efforts had saved 11 whales from a mass stranding on an Australian beach, with the animals now swimming freely in deep water and unlikely to return to land.

Tasmanian wildlife officers attach a satellite tracking device
to a pilot whale after a mass beaching.

Some 64 pilot whales, many of them mothers and calves, were found stranded on Anthonys Beach on the southern Australian island of Tasmania on Saturday.
Fifty-three of the animals died but rescuers worked throughout the weekend to save the rest, eventually hauling 11 of them on to specially-modified vehicles and driving them to a nearby beach for release into the sea.

Tasmania's Parks and Wildlife Service said satellite tracking devices which had been fitted to five of the rescued whales indicated that the animals were now swimming freely in deep water in Bass Strait.
"While this is good news, we will monitor the wider area with an aircraft," spokesman Chris Arthur said in a statement.

Wildlife officials said they were delighted the 11 rescued whales had regrouped in the water and said it was likely that they would also join up with humpback whales in the area.
"Not only have they survived being put back in the water after their traumatic ordeal but they've also found each other and are travelling with each other," the Department of Primary Industries and Water's David Pemberton said.

He said the tracking devices had proven that the rescue efforts, which involved swooping huge nets around the beached animals and hauling them on to vehicles and then releasing them at another beach, had been successful.

"For the first time in Australia, we have now got data which tells us that they are doing okay -- it is fantastic and incredibly exciting," Pemberton told national news agency AAP.
"In Tasmania, we deal with most whale strandings reported in Australia and previously, rescue attempts have been something of a hope and a prayer.
"Now we know that the rescue efforts are well worth it -- we have the evidence that tells us so."

Whale strandings are not uncommon in Tasmania but why they occur remains a subject of scientific debate.

Officials said autopsies will be carried out on the dead whales, which measured up to three metres (10 feet) in length.

Tapijt python in noorden Australië overleeft week in airco-ventilator auto - Dierenarts amputeert 5 cm staart van onfortuinlijke python

Dizzy snake survives week trapped in car

24-11-2008 ALYSSA BETT, Northern Territory News, Australia

A CARPET snake has survived a week-long ordeal after being trapped in the air-conditioning fan of a Territory woman's car. Goat breeder and former Territory Minister Noel Padgham, 80, had been wondering what the strange noise was.

LUCKY: This snake was found tangled in a car's
air-conditioning vent by mechanic Kit Carson. Pictures: Nick Welsh

"I heard it go clunketer, clunketer, clunketer," the Yarrawonga woman said.
Air-conditioning mechanic Kit Carson, 59, got in the car expecting to find the usual piece of paper - they tend to fall down the back of the glove box - but instead found a one-metre carpet python.
"Him and I both got a jump," he said.
"He'd been spinning around like a bloody washing machine, but the end of his tail must have been hanging out - it was all feathered and ratty."

Mr Carson, of Cheaper Car Air-Conditioning, whipped the dazed fella into a bucket and took him to Yarrawonga's Ark Animal Hospital. The snake is now in better shape - although he is now a little shorter than when he arrived.
Vets were forced to amputate about 5cm of his chopped-up tail.
But they expect the carpet python to make a full recovery.

The snake-in-a-fan experience is a first for Mr Carson - although he has happened on the occasional rats' nest.
He won't be charging Ms Padgham extra for the reptile work - "heart attacks are free".

"Exotische groene kikkers verdrijven inheemse"

Stranded whales transported in trucks

23-11-2008 By Paul Carter, Perth Now, Australia

RESCUERS have begun transporting 12 pilot whales from a mass stranding in Tasmania to another beach where it is believed there is better chance of them returning to the sea, authorities said today.

Parks and Wildlife Services manager Chris Arthur said on Sunday the whales were being transported on trucks equipped for the purpose from the stranding at Anthonys Beach, near Stanley, in the state's north-west.

They will receive a police escort and constant care for the 12 kilometre road trip along the Bass Highway to Goddfreys Beach, he said. An attempt will be made to usher the mammals to sea from Goddfreys Beach on Sunday's high tide, he said.

Mr Arthur said 52 whales from the maternal pod (consisting only of females and calves), have died in the stranding discovered late Saturday morning.

One of the whales died overnight despite attempts by 15 government officers and up to 30 volunteers to stop the animals overheating.

Animal rights group slams Cambodia monkey trade

23-11-2008 Reuters

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - An animal rights group says Cambodia is flouting international conventions by allowing the cruel capture of monkeys for research in the United States and China.

A report to be released on Monday by the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) says thousands of long-tailed macaque monkeys are taken from the wild each year and kept in cruel conditions before being exported.

An undated handout picture taken recently by the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) shows a recently caught wild infant monkey in a forest in Cambodia.

Thousands more are raised on monkey farms in conditions so far removed from nature that they are traumatized for life, it says. While the long-tailed macaque is not endangered, the group says the unregulated trade is already having an effect on population numbers and leading to a degrading of Cambodia's jungles.

A handout picture taken recently by the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) shows rows of cages, used to house monkeys, at Vanny Bio-Research in the Srok Kean Svay district in Cambodia.

"People around the world will be shocked by the findings of the BUAV investigation and to learn of the suffering inflicted on Cambodia's monkeys," said Michelle Thew, chief executive of the organization.
"At a time when there is growing international concern over the plight of primates, we urge the Cambodian government to protect its indigenous macaque population."

Apart from humans, the macaque is the world's most widespread primate and includes 22 species ranging from Africa to Japan.
They are highly intelligent and adapt well to living in urban areas where they frequently earn a love-hate relationship with locals on account of their mischievous ways.

The report says nearly 10,000 monkeys were exported from Cambodia last year -- mostly to laboratories and primate dealers in the U.S. and China.

International conventions discourage the use of captured wild animals for research, preferring second-generation breeding stock instead, but BUAV says this is widely ignored in Cambodia.
The report said as many as eight out of 10 macaques trapped in the wild died before reaching the laboratory as a result of poor treatment, handling or trauma.

The BUAV has called on the Cambodian government to better regulate the industry and to ban the capture of wild animals.

A handout picture taken recently by the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) shows a wild monkey collected from a submerged trap being handed to one of the trappers in a forest in Cambodia.

It also urges the U.S. and European Union to prohibit imports of captured wild animals and to press for better conditions at monkey breeding centers.

Life cut from seven years to 35 days

23-11-2008 Kelly Burke, Sydney Morning Herald, Australia

ANIMAL welfare group Voiceless (http://www.voiceless.org.au/) will publish tomorrow a report it says exposes cruel factory farming practices on chickens in Australia. Selective breeding has produced broiler birds that can grow to slaughter weight almost twice as fast as they did 30 years ago. A chicken's lifespan is six to seven years but a factory farm chicken's lifespan is 35 days - and its brief life is shared with up to 60,000 chickens in one shed.

The Voiceless report, From nest to nugget: An expose of Australia's chicken factories, will be launched tomorrow by former NSW premier Bob Carr. It argues that because breeding research has focused on developing muscle and fat tissue, many meat chickens have fragile legs that buckle under the animal's weight.
It argues lameness and skeletal disorders have become major welfare issues. In some cases, fast growth has affected the hearts and lungs, resulting in lethal metabolic disorders.

Last financial year, 470 million chickens were slaughtered in Australia, meeting a demand that has grown an astounding 15,000 per cent in the past 50 years.

Voiceless co-founder Brian Sherman said Australian chicken meat practices were shameful. But the Australian Chicken Meat Federation said Voiceless's claims were disappointing, inaccurate and misleading. It said Voiceless used false science and selectively quoted or misinterpreted overseas papers that were not relevant to Australian practices.

"It makes no economic sense to breed chickens that won't make it to market because they'll be lame or unable to reach feed and water," the federation's executive director, Andreas Dubs, said. "Australian chicken meat growers care about the welfare of their flocks."

RSPCA Australia said Voiceless's concerns were valid. "Our main welfare concerns are the lack of space and the fast growth, which does lead to problems with bone disorders," RSPCA scientific officer for farm animals Melina Tensen said. "You'll go to a factory farm and find most of them sitting down."

Time and tide strands whales

23-11-2008 Andrew Darby, Hobart, The Age, Australia

RESCUERS were last night working to save 13 distressed pilot whales, survivors from a herd of 52 stranded in north-west Tasmania. The whales came ashore yesterday on a high tide at little-used Anthony's Beach, near Stanley. Most were dead before they were found by a woman walking her dog, who called wildlife officials.

Mystery ... about 60 pilot whales died after becoming stranded on
Opoutere Beach in New Zealand (1st December 2004).

A passing Victorian tourist, Terry Hennessy, of Warragul, said he worked with others to stabilise the survivors.
"We dug trenches and rolled them in so they could sit upright and breathe," he said.
"Out of the 60, probably 10 of them were smaller, but the larger ones were seven or eight metres long. I think the most distressing part of it was the squeaking noise that one of the small ones was making."

Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service manager, Chris Arthur, said a team of 14 trained staff were assembling last night to lead attempts to stabilise the whales, with the aim of refloating them at high water.
"We have equipment and whale rescue trailers coming from around the state," he said.

Tasmania is frequently the scene of mass strandings of pilot whales.
Normally deep water animals, they can be confused when they swim inshore and approach shallow shelving beaches. Strong herd instincts can also act to draw swimming whales towards others already stranded.

Cool weather conditions forecast reduced the risk that they would dry out and get sunburnt.
Whale numbers have increased since whaling ended in Australian waters. It is 30 years since the Cheynes Beach Whaling Company in Albany, West Australia, caught its last whale, ending 178 years of whaling in Australia.

Friday was the 30th anniversary of the company's closure, which was commemorated with a breakfast for its former employees. The whaling station has been transformed into Whale World, a museum and tourist centre.

Formed in 1952, Cheynes Beach Whaling Company mostly hunted sperm whales, although humpback whales were also caught before a 1963 ban.

A college student who crept into the panda pen at a south China park hoping to get closer to the cuddly bear ended up in hospital Friday, management of the park said Saturday. The student, surnamed Liu, was seen nimbly crossing a two-meter high fence separating visitors from the giant panda's playground at around 4 p.m. Friday, said a worker at Qixing Park in Guilin, a major tourist attraction in the southern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

He said the park had clear signs warning visitors not to get over the fences for their own safety, "but the young man ignored them."

"The panda, Yangyang, was wide awake. Apparently scared by the intruder, he bit at Liu's arms and legs," he said on condition of anonymity. The panda's keepers rushed in to soothe Yangyang (an affectionate name meaning 'sun') and rescue Liu. "Yangyang was so cute and I just wanted to cuddle him," Liu said at No. 2 People's Hospital in Guilin Saturday. "I didn't expect he would attack... I don't remember how many bites I got."

Liu was injured in both arms and legs and underwent an operation Friday night. Doctors said he was out of danger but needed to stay in hospital for a few days.

Liu, 20, studies at a university in Guilin. He was visiting the park with his classmates.

Yangyang is a male panda. He is seven years old and weighs 80 kilograms. He was flown to the Guilin park from Sichuan Province last year to 'wed' his bride Yueyue, who was eight years older than Yangyang. Panda keepers at the park said Yangyang had seemingly forgotten all about Friday's accident and ate and played as usual Saturday.

New, Painful Sarah Palin Video Surfaces

22-11-2008 By MIKE BRODY, MyFox National, USA

LOS ANGELES -- Alaska Gov. and former Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin continues to keep a high profile even weeks after she and John McCain were defeated in their bid for the White House. And the bloggers and vloggers (video bloggers) couldn't be happier.

The latest video to make an appearance on YouTube shows Palin being interviewed at a turkey farm in her home town of Wasilla. She was there for the traditional pardoning of a turkey before Thanksgiving, and then she stuck around for an interview.

Check out the gruesome scene for yourself. (Warning: Viewer discretion is advised)

This time it wasn't what Palin said or didn't say that made the headlines, it was what was going on in the background.

As she talks to a reporter, a farm worker behind her is seen slaughtering turkeys. Palin seems totally oblivious to the fact that there is a guy right behind her stuffing turkeys into a machine and draining their blood.

At one point she even says, "It's great to be here!" ... the turkeys certainly didn't agree.

Sea eagle reintroduction plan for Norfolk

Sea eagles could be flying over East Anglia by next summer for the first time in 200 years if a reintroduction plan gets the go ahead.

22-11-2008 By Paul Eccleston, Telegraph, UK

The success of a similar scheme in Scotland has convinced conservation groups that it should be tried in England. Natural England, the RSPB and Anglian Water have carried out a feasibility study and will be launching a consultation process to see if local people would be in favour of the scheme.

But there will almost certainly be opposition from farmers who fear the eagle - also known as the white-tailed eagle - will attack livestock and particularly lambs.

An independent inquiry was announced by conservationists in the north-west Highlands of Scotland after crofters claimed that reintroduced birds had killed hundreds of animals.
But supporters of the scheme claim the release of the bird on the Isle of Mull in the Inner Hebrides has proved a major tourist draw attracting around 350,000 visitors every year. Visitors to the island spend annually between £1.4m-1.6m, which is put down to the presence of sea eagles.

The likely location for a release in England is north Norfolk where, it is claimed, a poll of 500 members of the public found 91 per cent in favour of seeing the bird back in the area.

The sea eagle is the fourth largest eagle in the world and the UK's largest bird of prey with a wing-span of eight feet. It is a scavenger and opportunist predator who feeds on fish, birds and medium-sized rabbits.

In the 18th century there were hundreds of the birds across the UK but were driven to extinction by 1916. The birds last bred in England and Wales in the 1830s and the last UK-bred bird was shot in Shetland in 1918.
A reintroduction programme began in Scotland in 1975 and there are now about 80 birds in 42 breeding territories with a big expansion planned for the east coast of Scotland but it could take 100 years for the birds to spread naturally into England.

Natural England's chief scientist, Tom Tew, said: "Before attempting to return a species that has been lost for so long, it is important to understand its potential effect on both wildlife and people.
"We are consulting widely in order to make a fully informed judgement as to whether, through this ambitious project, there is an opportunity to return one of the UK's rarest and most spectacular birds to England."

And Rob Lucking, RSPB area manager for The Wash and North Norfolk, said: "The sight of birds of prey like the white-tailed eagle is a sure sign of a strong and healthy environment. Without them our ecosystem is disfigured, our natural and cultural heritage diminished and we are all the poorer.
"England has been without these magnificent birds for too long. Such a reintroduction must be done properly and with due regard to the people and wildlife nearby but, if it can be done, then the sight of eagles soaring over Norfolk would give a huge lift to people's spirits and to the local economy."

NFU environment adviser for the East Anglia region Paul Hammett said: "We want feedback from NFU members on whether or not they support this proposal, what benefits it could bring and what impact it could have on farming operations and land management.
"We know from Scotland that sea eagles do occasionally take lambs, though most reports seem to relate to them scavenging dead lambs.
"There is also a risk that they could take piglets, but Natural England suggests it will work closely with farmers to ensure that this is not a problem."

It is hoped that a decision will be made next spring on whether the project should proceed and the first releases could take place in summer 2009.

Over 200 narwhal trapped in Canadian ice

22-11-2008 Agence France Presse

OTTAWA (AFP) — At least 200 narwhal whales in Canada's Arctic, trapped by winter ice that is setting in around them and facing starvation or suffocation, must be culled, officials said Friday. Hunters from the village of Pond Inlet on Baffin Island discovered the animals trapped near Bylot Island, about 17 kilometers (10.5 miles) from Pond Inlet, on November 15, and checked on them periodically.

The local hunters are allowed to harvest only 130 whales each year for food, according to standards set by the federal department of Fisheries and Oceans.
But department spokesman Keith Pelley told AFP: "It's unlikely the animals are going to survive the winter, so the hunters have been given authorization to cull them."
The hunters have been on the ice slaughtering the whales since Thursday and are likely to accomplish their task over the coming days, he said.

Narwhal are found mostly in the Arctic circle, and are renowned for their extraordinarily long tusk, which is actually a twisted incisor tooth that projects from the left side of its upper jaw and can be up to three meters (10 feet) long.

"A couple of weeks ago, when the ice was still moving, there were quite a few narwhal seen out there in the open water," Jayko Allooloo, chairman of the Pond Inlet hunters and trappers organization, told public broadcaster CBC.
"About a week later, they're stuck."

Community elders and officials feared the whales would die from a lack of oxygen as the ice grew thicker around them, Pelley explained.
There are about a dozen areas of open waters where they could come up for air, but it is a tight squeeze for all of them.

Watchdog Group Opposes San Antonio Lab Monkey

Shipment

Demands 250 Monkeys be Returned to the Wilds of Nepal

21-11-2008 Gateway to Hell

SAN ANTONIO, TX - A National Research Watchdog Organization has contacted the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research to protest the impending shipment of 25 macaque monkeys from Nepal to the San Antonio laboratory, and to demand the release of more than 250 primates now being held at a U.S. funded primate lab in Lele, Lalitpur district, Nepal.

According to government reports obtained by SAEN (http://www.all-creatures.org/saen/index.html), the Southwest National Primate Research Center (SNPRC) already imprisons at least 1,600 macaque monkeys, of which 1,400 are used for breeding. The macaque monkeys comprise about 25 percent of the 6,000 primates incarcerated at SNPRC. Nationally, more than 40,000 macaque monkeys are held in major breeding centers like the SNPRC.
The Nepal facility receives an estimated $660,000 per year in federal funding, through the SNPRC, which itself is connected more than $42 million in annual federal funding, while the Primate Center System which is comprised of 8 laboratories is connected to approximately $1.2 billion in annual federal funding.

"Nepalese religious, animal welfare and wildlife groups have expressed opposition to the exportation of primates to U.S. labs, and a significant part of the Hindu and Buddhist people of Nepal consider these monkeys sacred," said Michael A. Budkie, A.H.T., Executive Director, SAEN.

"The U.S. research industry should not be plundering the wildlife of other nations to satisfy its unending thirst for monkeys and federal funding," he said.

Veel protest in Peru tegen stierenvechten

Many protest bullfighting in Peru

21-11-2008 BY BARBARA R. DRAKE, Special to The Miami Herald, USA

LIMA -- Dapper in a gray suit and cap, Wencelao Espino Gonzales gazed at the pink walls of this capital city's historic Plaza de Acho -- the second oldest bullring in the world -- and explained his lifelong passion for bullfighting.

''It is a spectacle of energy and movement,'' Gonzales, 83, said on a recent Saturday. ``Like a ballet between the torero and the bull. The most important moment is the kill.''
Aficionados like Espino Gonzales flock to the 242-year-old Plaza de Acho each October and November for one of the premier bullfighting events in Latin America. But in the last several years, the Acho bullfights have been drawing another crowd: young anti-bullfighting activists, known as ''antitaurinos'' in Spanish.

''Bullfighting is a cruel and barbaric spectacle that has no place in modern Peru,'' said Roger Torres Pando, 25, national coordinator for Perú Antitaurino, an alliance of 20 animal-rights groups. ``It's not an art or a sport; it's an extreme form of cruelty to animals. It must be banned.''

ANNUAL FESTIVAL
Plaza de Acho -- built 17 years after the Maestranza bullring in Seville, Spain -- is the controversial site for the bullfight feasts of el Señor de los Milagros (the Lord of the Miracles).
The festival, which runs through Sunday, lures top toreros from Spain and Latin America who compete before as many as 14,000 spectators, many from Lima's wealthy elite.
Since 2004, Perú Antitaurino has staged four series of protests at Acho, a few marred by violent confrontations.

In October 2007, activists insulted bullfighters and spectators entering the stadium, prompting police to use tear gas.
Winds blew the tear gas into the bullring, temporarily blinding audience members and torero Vicente Barrera, who had to pause the fight.

In protests earlier this month as the first corrida of the Señor de los Milagros festival got under way, about 300 activists rallied at Lima's downtown Plaza San Martin as riot police stood guard.
''Bullfighters are cowards and assassins!'' yelled the protesters, an assortment of college students, artists and actors, most in their early 20s. ``Enough of the torture!''
''Shame on the silence of the Catholic Church,'' read one placard. ``Life is life. Respect it!''

Unlike in Spain and other European countries with an animal rights history, Peru's antitaurino movement is in its infancy, with an older generation clinging to traditions from the colonial past. But the movement is growing.
''Four years ago, we had about 100 activists in our alliance. Now we have about 2,000,'' Torres Pando said of Perú Antitaurino.

YOUNG PROTESTERS
The average antitaurino is 20, said the organizer. With Peru's median age 25, that makes the activists contemporary with much of the population.
''Most Peruvians think that bullfighting is wrong,'' said Torres Pando, pointing to a recent University of Lima study of residents in the capital city and in neighboring Callao that shows a wide majority -- 79.7 percent -- oppose bullfighting, while 18.4 percent approve. He extrapolates those figures to represent all of Peru, not just the capital area.
''We antitaurinos represent the true voice of the country,'' he says. ``Peruvians are fed up with bullfighting.''

Freddy Villafuerte, a director of Taurolima, the organization that promotes the Señor de los Milagros bullfights, puts a different spin on the numbers.
As he is quick to point out, the university's study from 2007 showed that 14.4 percent approved of bullfighting. This year's study measured 18.4 percent approval.
''Bullfighting is becoming more popular in Lima, not less,'' Villafuerte said.

Ticket sales for the Acho festival are another measure of bullfighting's popularity. This year, Villafuerte said, single ticket sales are up by as much as 10 percent over 2007, with nearly 8,000 sold for the first corrida. Sales of expensive season tickets (abonos) have increased dramatically.

As of Nov. 2, about 1,500 abonos had been sold in 2008, compared with 1,350 in 2007 and 800 in 2006, Villafuerte said, nearly doubling in two years.
The abonos cost between the equivalent of $150 and $495 for reserved seats in the arena's exclusive shaded section, with private boxes fetching $1,400 -- no small change in this developing country where UNICEF estimates the average annual income at $2,920.
''It's a sign that Peru's economy is doing well,'' Villafuerte said.

Brisk ticket sales also reflect a perception among Lima's elite that Acho is the new hot spot.
''Acho is becoming the place to be in October and November -- the place to rub shoulders with society,'' Villafuerte said.

A ban on bullfighting in Lima, where five bullfighting festivals are staged each year, would be a coup for the activists. Perú Antitaurino hopes to achieve something bigger, however.
The group is pressuring Congress to pass bill No. 496, a proposed amendment to the country's animal protection law to prohibit bullfighting nationwide.
''The time has come to pass this bill,'' said Torres Pando.

`IMPOSSIBLE'
''It's an opium dream to think the ban could happen in Peru,'' countered Villafuerte. ``Especially in the provinces -- impossible.
''There are about 400 patron saints festivals in the provinces every year, each with corridas to the death,'' he said. ``The people demand a good fight, that the bull die a noble death.''
Torres Pando acknowledged it will be difficult to change traditions in towns like Huancayo, Cajamarca and Junín, where bullfighting is ``very assimilated into Catholic fiestas.''

Nevertheless, Perú Antitaurino plans to protest there next year.
Villafuerte, himself a bullfighter, says the activists ignore contradictions in their ethics.
'Many of the antitaurinos eat meat and anticuchos [grilled cows' hearts], but do not protest the killing of animals for human consumption,'' Villafuerte said.
``They accept that sacrifice but not the one in the bullring.''

PETA VS verzet zich tegen.......'ezel basketbal'

Donkey Basketball cruel, say animal-rights activists

21-11-2008 MELISSA SANTOS; melissa.santos@thenewstribune.com, The News Tribune, Tacoma, Washington (USA)

Shooting hoops from the back of a donkey is one way to raise money for a good cause. And few would argue that awarding teachers $300 grants for classroom projects or after-school activities is not a good cause. But animal-rights activists say Donkey Basketball is also a way to hurt the animals and possibly their riders.

Members of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals want to stop a Donkey Basketball Tournament scheduled Saturday at Graham-Kapowsin High School. They say it will subject the animals to pain and confusion.

But leaders of the Bethel School District Foundation, a nonprofit that supports special programs, say they’ve hired handlers who promise to treat the animals well.
“They’ve assured us that they have rules in place that are ways to protect the animals, and that they will in no way be harmed,” foundation spokeswoman Shannon Booth said Wednesday.

The group supplying the donkeys is Donkey Sports Inc., based in Entiat, Chelan County. Owner Bruce Wick said he’s been running these basketball games since 1980 and has never seen an animal injured.
His company provides a referee to monitor the games and ensure the donkeys aren’t harmed.
“It’s not like we just give them the donkeys and let them do whatever they want with them,” Wick said.
The company also bars anyone weighing more than 225 pounds from riding.

But PETA spokeswoman Desiree Acholla said that amount is far more than a donkey can bear.
“Donkeys can only carry about 100 pounds,” Acholla said. “At these events we’ve seen people take running leaps and jump on these donkeys, and you can see their backs buckling under the weight. They are being forced to perform confusing and painful acts for the amusement of humans.”

The Humane Society of Tacoma and Pierce County isn’t taking a position, said development director Marguerite Richmond.
“We do oppose using animals in entertainment if it causes undo stress or pain, but we really haven’t researched it specifically,” Richmond said.

PETA has succeeding at getting donkey sporting events canceled at school districts in Illinois and New Jersey, as well as the South Whidbey School District on Whidbey Island, Island County.
In some cases, riders have been injured. A rider in a Waterloo, Ill., donkey basketball game was awarded more than $110,000 for injuries he sustained in a game, and a Wisconsin state senator fell off a donkey and broke her leg in another.

Locally, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department reconsidered a donkey sports fundraiser it planned in 2006 after hearing PETA’s concerns, department spokesman Ed Troyer said.
Sheriff’s deputies were supposed to play a softball game against local firefighters while seated on the donkeys’ backs, but they decided to walk beside the animals instead, Troyer said.
“The PETA folks had some legitimate concerns,” Troyer said. “Most of us don’t want to hurt anyone, it was just out of ignorance.”

Despite the change, the fundraiser turned out fine, he said.
“It was probably a lot more entertaining,” Troyer said. “You couldn’t go get the ball unless the donkey wanted to go.”
Plus, he added, “there wasn’t a donkey that was going to carry a few of those guys.”
Last year the Bethel foundation distributed about $6,000 to teachers in that district, board member Karen Marchesini said.
The group has only about one fundraiser a year; last year it was an event with the Tacoma Symphony. This year board members wanted something more inexpensive and family oriented, Marchesini said.
With the poor economy, the group has decided not to charge admission, she said. It hopes to make some money from voluntary donations.

More than 30 local educators will play in Saturday’s game. Wick said his workers will make sure each rider is matched with an animal that can support the player.
“We always try to make sure we get the right person on the right donkey,” he said.

Illegale handel in dieren via webblogs in Maleisië - Meeste verhandelde exotische dieren belanden op menu's restaurants

Protected animals sold on blogs

21-11-2008 Straits Times, Singapore

KUALA LUMPUR - MERCHANTS who illegally hawk endangered wildlife have begun using blogs to promote their business to tech-savvy customers in Malaysia, an official said on Friday. Authorities have arrested at least six people who used blogs to unlawfully sell snakes, birds and other protected creatures in recent months, said Mr Sivananthan Elagupillay, the government Wildlife Department's enforcement director.

He said department officials were scouring the Internet to crack down on the new way of communicating by the arcane network of animal buyers and sellers who traditionally have operated by word-of-mouth.

Enforcement officers posing as clients made their latest catch last weekend, detaining a man who sought to sell 17 endangered pythons through his blog, Mr Sivananthan said.

People who possess threatened species of wildlife without an ownership license face a penalty of up to three years in prison and a fine if convicted.
Officials have seized numerous protected creatures this year, including owls, monitor lizards and cobras. Most were meant for restaurants that offer exotic animal meat to the same network of animal buyers and sellers. -- AP

Pet Store Chain Tied To Puppy Mills

Petland Accused Of Telling Customers Dogs Come From Breeders

21-11-2008 KCTV5 Kansas City, USA

WASHINGTON -- The Humane Society said many Petland stores are selling puppies from so-called puppy mills but telling customers that the dogs come from good breeders. The animal protection group made the charges at a news conference in Washington on Thursday after an eight-month investigation of the chain. It involved 21 Petland stores and dozens of breeders and brokers.

The Humane Society said dogs at the mills were found in dirty cages and cages with wire flooring so large that the puppies' paws and even the paws of the mother dogs would fall through.

Picture from a Puppy Mill In Holmes Co Ohio.

The group said pet stores should not be buying puppies from "abusive puppy mills" and "should not be lying to consumers" about where they got their puppies.

In a statement, Petland said the company does not support substandard breeding facilities and provides each store with guidelines on humane care of animals.

Schotland gaat wilde bevers uit Noorwegen uitzetten -Vier Noorse beverfamilies nu zes maanden in quarantine

Plan to reintroduce beavers to wild

21-11-2008 Press Association, The Guardian, UK

Friday November 21 2008 A plan to reintroduce beavers to the UK after a 400-year absence has entered its next phase after the arrival of four families from Norway. The mammals were captured after being tracked for two months and will spend the next six months in quarantine.
Wildlife staff hope to release them into the Scottish countryside next year.

The capture of the beavers marks the latest phase of the Scottish Beaver Trial, a six-year project aimed at achieving the UK's first native mammal reintroduction.
It is being spearheaded by the Scottish Wildlife Trust and the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS).

The organisations, with a team of specialists, have been tracking the beavers in the Telemark region of Norway since September. Each beaver family comprises one adult male and female and between one and three yearlings (or kits).

After six months in quarantine, they will be released in Knapdale, mid-Argyll, during a trial in the spring.
Once released, the project partners and Forestry Commission Scotland will manage the scheme, with Scottish Natural Heritage conducting scientific monitoring on the impact of the beavers.

Iain Valentine, head of animals, conservation and education for RZSS, said the project teams in Norway monitored the beavers during nightfall, when they are most active. He said: "The team in Norway spent long periods of time in specific sites to identify complete family groups, ensuring that none are left behind. They did a fantastic job and all the beavers are in excellent health."

Simon Jones, project manager for the Scottish Beaver Trial, said: "Beavers are native to Britain but were hunted to extinction over 400 years ago. We are excited to get the trial under way and really see what benefits beavers can bring to Scotland."

Baghdad plans to kill stray dogs

20-11-2008 USA Today, USA

BAGHDAD (AP) — Baghdad authorities announced a citywide campaign on Thursday to kill stray dogs in the Iraqi capital after a spate of dog attacks on city residents. "We have decided to take action after receiving complaints of rising attacks on people by packs of dogs, and reports that some children are refusing to go to school because they're afraid of being bitten," said Anam Hamid, head of the environment board on the Baghdad provincial council.

The campaign is slated to start next week in the western half of the city, then move to the eastern side of the capital in early 2009.

Three teams made up of a shooter from the Interior Ministry, two military veterans and a police escort will use poisoned meat and rifles to kill the dogs.
The U.S. military has been informed of the plans.

More than a thousand stray dogs roam the Iraqi capital in packs, Hamid said, adding that 13 people died in the city in August after being bitten by the animals.

Baghdad's provincial council said in a statement that the operation aims "to eradicate the diseases transmitted from dogs to human beings ... after the spread of the stray dog phenomenon."
Under Saddam Hussein, who was ousted from power in the 2003 U.S.-led war, authorities culled stray dogs in the capital on an almost annual basis. The new campaign will be the first since Saddam's ouster.

Mogelijk hervatting internationale boycot acties PETA tegen Australische ('mulesing') wolindustrie

PETA talks up its wool boycott actions

21-11-2008 Ian Munro Herald Correspondent in New York, Sydney Morning Herald, Australia

ANIMAL welfare activists are threatening to widen international boycotts of Australian wool if the industry does not recommit to end the controversial practice of "mulesing" sheep. This follows the takeover of the industry body, Australian Wool Innovation, by a faction critical of the 2010 deadline for the phasing out of mulesing, in which skin and flesh is cut away from animals' hind quarters to prevent fly strike.

Matt Prescott, campaign director for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, said if the deadline was scrapped new boycotts could be initiated against retailers who refuse to stop using Australian wool.
On Wednesday Mr Prescott wrote to Australian Wool Innovation demanding clarification of its policy, saying that dozens of retailers - including Abercrombie & Fitch, Hugo Boss and Perry Ellis International - would not use Australian wool until the practice was abandoned.
"If [Australian Wool Innovation] backs out of the deadline we will certainly reinstitute our campaign … ," Mr Prescott said.

At Australian Wool Innovation's annual meeting in Perth this week, growers were told they did not need to adhere to the mulesing phase-out. Four new people were installed on the nine-member board. The new chairman, Wal Merriman, said yesterday that PETA's claims were "just bullshit" and that the company was still funding research into viable alternatives to mulesing.
He declined to comment on whether the industry would be able to make the 2010 deadline. "At the end of the day if we don't mules, 3½ million sheep will die a slow, painful [death] from fly strike," he said.

Mr Prescott said 35 retailers had told PETA directly that they were boycotting Australian wool, but international media reports suggested at least 60 major retailers had adopted the policy.
In Australia, a Drizabone spokeswoman said the company sourced all its wool from producers who had adopted non-mulesing techniques.

A long list of Australian designers, who joined a campaign to promote the use of Australian wool, declined to comment on the issue. A spokeswoman for the Morrissey and David Lawrence labels said: "We haven't really been following the issue."

The Australian Retailers Association's executive director, Richard Evans, said he would not support a boycott but encouraged farmers to develop breeds of sheep that did not require mulesing. However, he said the PETA protesters did not have the "facts".

Speciaal overleg kabinet over verharding dierenactivisme

Overleg over verharding dierenactivisme

20-11-2008 Nieuws.nl
