Hundreds of dying rats found in Foster disgust

SPCA chief

31-12-2008 Mike McKinney - By John Hill, Providence Journal staff writer, Projo.com

FOSTER -- The police and the Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to animals are trying to find out who left 280 dead or starving rats in eight containers on the side of Hemlock Road Tuesday.

Someone left these containers of rats — with 280 in all —
on the side of Hemlock Road in Foster on Tuesday.
Foster Police photo

Dr. E. J. Finocchio , an East Providence veterinarian and president of the Rhode Island SPCA, said in a 45-year veterinary career what Foster police found on Hemlock Road was the "grossest, most sickest thing I've ever seen in my life."

The rats were in three glass aquariums, two bird cages and three cat carriers, he said. In one of them there was a six-inch layer of dead rats that had live rats living on top of it. Some had resorted to cannibalism, he said.
"Despite the fact that they are rats, they are living things. You just can't do that," he said.
"I have never, ever seen anything like this in my life," Finocchio said.

Of the 280 rats, 72 were dead and 208 were still alive to varying degrees, he said. All of the surviving rats had to be euthanized individually, by hand, by SPCA members, he said. The bodies were cremated, though a half dozen or so corpses were frozen to be used as evidence in any criminal prosecution.

Foster Police Chief Robert E. Coyne Jr. said police received two calls at about 2:50 p.m. Tuesday from people who had driven down Hemlock Road and spotted the containers on the ground about 20 feet from the road. Hemlock Road is a local road that runs along the northwest section of the land around the Scituate Reservoir and is not a through street. Coyne said the police were working on the initial assumption that the person who left the rats there with lives in the area or is familiar with it.

Coyne said the rats were white and the type that might be sold as food for owners of exotic pets like snakes, or to pet shops or laboratories.

Finocchio said judging by the number of rats, they may have been left by someone who was raising them commercially, saw the market collapse and wanted to get rid of them.
"But they had options," he said of whomever left the animals. "They could have called us."

Over 200 protected parakeets rescued from train

31-12-2008 The Times of India, India

Ahmedabad: They pecked and necked in public, but nobody really minded the cacophonic romance by this bunch of parakeets seized as illegal railway consignment on Wednesday. Over 200 of the rose-ringed variety of parakeets were rescued by the forest department from Kalupur railway station and taken to the office of conservator of forests(CCF) in Hansol.

Conservator of forests (wildlife crime cell), Dinesh Sharma says, "We got a tip-off from New Delhi about this illegal consignment of rose-ringed parakeets parcelled from Meerut to Ahmedabad by Ahmedababad-bound Haridwar Mail."

"We stationed a 15-member team throughout Tuesday night at Kalupur railway station in plain clothes and patiently waited for illegal sellers to claim the parcels. But no one turned up to claim it. After initial investigation we found that the address on the parcels were fictitious."

The rose-ringed parakeets come under Schedule IV animals as per Wildlife Protection Act and in illegal market costs from Rs 250 to over Rs 500.

Deputy conservator of forest, Ahmedabad, Ramana Murthy, says, "We found 13 dead birds in the cramped parcel boxes. They were stuffed and were under complete stress and had nothing to eat or drink inside the enclosures."

CCF worked in collaboration with Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB), Government of India. Sharma says, "WCCB has started their investigation by sending a team to Meerut to find out about this whole nexus of illegal trade of birds."

"We are also looking into the role of railway officials in this nexus. Technically, for a parcel containing any birds except poultry to be transported from railways it is essential to obtain a certificate from chief wildlife warden or authorised officer of state government. We are also investigating how these parcels were booked," adds Sharma.

On the fate of seized birds, JS Desai, city range forest officer, Ahmedabad says, "We will soon be releasing these parakeets in wild after we are done with the required documentation work."

SHAC trial

31-12-2008 IndyMedia UK

I’m fed up with the histrionics, the exaggerations and the lies about SHAC and so this is my contribution to counter them.

(Put the kettle on - this is quite a read)

I write as someone who was involved with SHAC in the beginning in 1999 until now (although I only attend very few demonstrations). I have been heavily involved in the campaign in the past and have been convicted of quite a few offences and feel that I am fairly well placed to challenge some of the regurgitated nonsense spewed out by the press which might assist other activists as well as share my personal experiences of the police, the legal system and HLS.

I would never have believed that back in 1999 when Hillgrove closed that our civil liberties would become so eroded. Back then, August 1999, articles were published in the national press congratulating the campaign as the RSPCA moved in and re-homed every single cat. Tactics now , of course, are VERY different and much more restrained as new laws made demonstrations outside a “home” practically illegal, in fact demonstrating against vivisection at all is a gamble as to its legality with the 4 ½ year prison sentence dealt out to Sean Kirtley under SOCPA who had done absolutely nothing which broke the law. Anti vivisection demonstrations in the last 2 or 3 years have not included home demonstrations, or running into offices, or blockades even though all of these are non violent forms of protest used by many other campaigners over decades, for example the Suffragettes would march en masse to the homes of their detractors oft bearing flaming torches (in fact some of them burnt down the Home Secretary’s new house and indeed the Oxford boat house in fact there is a picture of JRR Tolkien looking at the scorched remains). Not once was any individual harmed by SHAC, for the record the incident in which the CEO of HLS was wounded was actually publicly condemned by SHAC .Why then the state was so keen to crush SHAC with unprecedented cooperation between police forces was not because SHAC is a “terrorist” organisation but because SHAC have forced not just HLS but the entire foul industry to the very brink of survival in the UK.

So what is in the papers and on telly?
A round up shows the following accusations:
A 7 year campaign of terror!
A car with “evil scum” written on it.
Some individuals were branded paedophiles.
Gladys Hammond case gets brought up yet again.
“Vicious” phone calls.
Nasty things being sent in the post for example used condoms and sanitary towels. Threats to infect with HIV.
Walking into offices wearing masks, talking to workers etc.
Graffiti/Vandalism.
Talking about how nasty vivisectors are in the “privacy” of their own homes as well as feelings of hatred and retribution.
Not handing in petitions to the government.
That Greg is the leader of the ALF.
And in the Sunday Times the best of the lot (28/12/2008) “trying to kill” people!!!!
That seems to be about it and from another perspective not one “victim” was actually harmed by any animal rights activist let alone the defendants (except the HLS CEO). So let us look at each accusation in turn.

A 7 year campaign of terror!
Three of the convicted defendants had nothing to do with the campaign in the early years, they were still at school and had never heard of SHAC or HLS, only The Times bothered to point this out. The radio and TV news actually stated that the defendants themselves were directly responsible for everything done against HLS. The grave of Gladys was shown on national TV as though the defendants were in some way responsible even though nearly half of them were not involved then. A message to us all no doubt which should be worded, “If you become part of an effective campaign you are not only responsible for the actions of persons unknown now but for the actions of those who broke the law before you even heard of said campaign, we can’t catch those responsible so you can pay with your liberty instead”.

Personally I think that if I pour paint stripper on someone’s car (not that I would you understand, this is hypothetical) that I should be the person who is arrested and taken to court not the person who made the leaflet through which I learnt something that incensed me so much I broke the law. Even less should someone who joins a campaign 3 years later be made to pay for my actions which took place when they were a child.

SHAC has always been and remains a legal campaign (even the Times says so) which highlights the atrocities carried out at HLS. Years ago The News of the World had a campaign against paedophiles and printed addresses and the inevitable happened, Should the editor be prosecuted? Should The leaders of the Countryside Alliance face 14 years each in prison because some pro hunt activists threatened to poison the water supply and some did go slow protests on the M25? Should Plane Stupid be rounded up and incarcerated for the entirety of their youth because they effectively said, “continue cheap haul flights and we
will disrupt them”?

A car with “evil scum” written on it.
Not nice for the owner and illegal but hardly crime of the century. Thousands of people face this sort of thing every day and in fact get their cars burnt out on rough estates. Funny enough the police are not too interested unless the “victim” is involved in vivisection. I am not aware that ANY of the defendants are in any way responsible for this act.

Some individuals were branded paedophiles.
Vivisection is all about poisoning, burning, mutilating and other forms of torturing of innocent victims. I don’t like calling animal abusers paedophiles, most of them are not what they do is often as bad and often worse but false accusations in my humble opinion undermine the value of animals as sentient beings and cause mistrust as well as sympathy being generated for the accused. Others will no doubt disagree. A child rapist will of course serve far less time in prison than an animal rights activist showing the real values of our warped society.

Gladys Hammond case gets brought up yet again.
None of the defendants had anything whatsoever to do with this. In fact no activist has admitted to, been found guilty of or has been charged with disinterring Mrs Hammonds earthly remains. A huge question mark remains over whether it was animal rights activists or a state perpetuated hoax. For the sake of argument let us say that it was animal rights activists who did this ghastly deed, horrible yes but no living creature was harmed. In fact BAA intend to desecrate 3 entire graveyards if the Heathrow expansion goes ahead. What of the sacred relics of indigenous peoples which include their dead which languish in museums? Do BAA workers and museum curators deserve to go to prison? I will just say my own personal view is that whilst I view a dead body as an empty shell one of the hallmarks of decency is to show respect for that empty shell which includes the corpses of abused guinea pigs strewn over Darley Oaks farm. I remember once in the Lake District coming across a lamb literally splattered across the road. The ewe was hysterical and it was only when I stopped the traffic and retrieved the bits of body together and placed them at her feet that her pitiful lamentations stopped, meanwhile my companion who was a meat eater was throwing up. However grotesque this act may appear it is nowhere near the depths those who experiment on animals go to when they mutilate the bodies of the living. I repeat NONE OF THE DEFENDANTS HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH THIS. Showing the grave in connection with this unrelated case was obviously meant to intimate that SHAC and indeed all animal rights campaigners dig up corpses.

“Vicious” phonecalls/Nasty things being sent in the post.
Let me make this perfectly clear. Whilst I am sure that some activists did send junk mail, nasty things and make nasty phone calls do people seriously think that this was a one way street? Vivisectors and their sympathisers would often ring up threatening to torture animals, threatening to kill us, threatening all sorts of stuff. Once when I collected the Newchurch Campaign post the post office workers and I were subjected to the liquefied corpse of a mouse which stank the place out as indeed was Evesham police station where I took the little corpse and the jiffy bag it came in to have the crime recorded. Was I a sobbing wreck? No not really and I did not expect the police to spend £3.5 million investigating the offence which was just as well because they were saving their pennies for stopping peaceful protest at Sequani. On the 26th June 2003 the following came to my house; some leather bags, flowery dresses bizarrely addressed to Brian Cass, some jeans and some books and this is not uncommon. In fact sending leather knowingly to a vegan is morally the same as sending pork sausages to devout Muslims so please let us not even pretend that HLS workers are the divine paragons of innocence the media portray them as. I get lots of junk mail wittily addressed to Miss B. Hugger and lots of other amusing stuff. I have been sent pizzas that I have not ordered. I am not bothered it comes with the territory even though I have not done likewise to anyone else. I would suggest that someone who spends their days poisoning innocent creatures should stop whinging and also take this sort of thing in their stride, the wimps! Of course the police SHOULD be impartial on this matter, if 7 people are facing 14 years in prison because others sent nasty things in the post and making phone calls then should not those on the opposing side be prosecuted too? The media are aware of the fact that vivisectors and hunters threaten and harass animal rights people but always choose to omit that part of the tale which I find a bit sinister. Is it really any suprise in this climate that some activists lose all faith in legal campaigning and the courts? Talking of “nasty things” HLS and all their little fiends (sorry…friends!) love sending bits of paper to me usually attached to process servers with shades who peer into the house and last year Fidelity International sent 2 of their hired thugs not only to serve some nonsense on me but to go up straight to the window and photograph me. I can live with it but if I were to do the same to a Fidelity employee I would be imprisoned for a very long time. When did it become acceptable for private corporations to blatantly attempt to intimidate protestors at home?

Threats to infect with HIV.
This is not pleasant but is clearly an empty threat. Even if a sanitary towel were infused with HIV infected blood the virus would well long dead within minutes let alone days during which it winds its way through the post. In fact some public loos pose more of a threat due to overflowing sani bins. Hepatitus is much more of a concern. What annoys me is the slack journalism that exaggerates the myth of HIV being something you get through the ether as opposed to unprotected sex or sharing needles with an infected person. Now even if someone actually deliberately infected a victim with HIV I think it is unlikely they would go to prison for up to 14 years. Very serious injuries inflicted with the utmost cruelty rarely receive even a third of this and we are talking about threats here, made not by the defendants but by other people.

Now on the news on 23rd December 2008 a bloke called Alistair Nisbet was gloating quite a bit no doubt because he was the senior prosecutor in this case. In November 2007 he made lots of threats which were as it turned out to be empty. There were many raids on 1st May2007 which included lots of people on the peripheries of this legal campaign, lots of computers were taken including mine. Under the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act Alistair demanded our PGP keys under pain of 2 years in prison, the fact that many of us did not use PGP or in some cases not even know how to turn on a computer or even have a computer mattered not to Alistair who basically “tried it on” in order to divide and scare people into giving him information. It did not work especially after Indymedia, the Register and the BBC all reported on the matter and lots of people were horrified by the prospect of the state blackmailing people into handing over personal files but it shows how the CPS are quite capable of playing dirty. A word of advice, often the CPS and the police are bluffing this was a prime example.

Walking into offices, talking to workers.
Some papers put something about “breaking into“ offices. This is not what happens in the time honoured tradition of occupying offices and shops a tactic which MANY campaigns used not just SHAC. Nowadays there is something called Aggravated Trespass to take into account it used to only apply to “interfering with a legal activity” outside nut now applies inside too, however it is not illegal to occupy offices but can be if the right person tells you to leave and you do not. Back in the days when they could use reasonable force to move you and that was that I used to do this all the time often sitting down at board meetings, conference calls etc before being kicked out by security or the police(often literally, some of the bruises were quite spectacular!), on occasion workers and indeed managers would engage in conversation about vivisection, leaflets would be handed out. It paid to be polite and to try and be humorous, after all many workers had not heard about HLS and when they did they were outraged that the company they worked for was involved with such cruelty. On TV people in skull masks could be seen mulling around whilst one “victim” looks rather bemused, at least it made their working day a bit more exciting. Do those people deserve to spend up to14 years in prison for walking into an office, making a bit of noise, handing out leaflets and going outside again? To those who think they do get a grip!

Graffiti/Vandalism/Property damage.
Of course this is not pleasant for those at the receiving end but surely if Joe Bloggs reads a leaflet about how Pfizer abused African children in grotesque experiments in the 21st century in which many of them were murdered and he is incensed but with that information he has choices;

1. Hide from the information, “this can’t be true, surely SOMEONE would have done SOMETHING”.
2. He can lobby his MP and write to newspapers and donate to charity
3. He can demonstrate legally and peacefully, hand out leaflets and maybe be civilly disobedient by blocking the gates at Pfizer’s HQ in Sandwich, Kent.
4. He can read the letter sent back by his MP (who happens to have just got a nice payout from Pfizer’s lobbyists) and look in vain for his letter in the paper, he can go to a demonstration and maybe face years in prison or he can decide that the only way to have any impact on this heartless corporation is to target those who make the decisions where it really hurts. He is a good person he does not wish to hurt them physically but he does want them to stop committing atrocities and so he torches cars belonging to executives, in a way which does not cause harm to any living thing of course. If he is caught, and he has been careful no criminal record, no presence on demonstrations, he may even face less time in prison than the person involved in producing the leaflet! Leafleting and peaceful protest have now become more dangerous to liberty than firebombing. Severe sentences mean that if someone is prepared to go to such lengths that they will try and make their risks worthwhile.

If the police cannot catch Joe Bloggs is that really the fault of the campaign which produced the leaflet? Should “the organisers” serve a sentence in his stead? Should anything (including newspaper reports and programmes such as Dispatches which reported on Pfizer’s disgusting crimes in Africa) which causes a multinational to be detested be forthwith abolished or should not a decent society put the executives responsible in the dock and charge them with genocide?

A very nasty case of intimidation from the police occurred when I was attacked by PC Manton. A woman came to my aid as I lay on the tarmac splattered in blood. She was none too happy with me or SHAC but as a decent person tried to make me comfortable and then came forward to the police to testify against Manton who had left me with life threatening injuries. I bumped into her long after the trial and she told me that since she became a prosecution witness the police would stop her car 3 times a week, there were death threats at home and when she spoke to the senior investigating officer he told her that he could not protect her and that it might be best if she did not testify at all. Now that’s what I call blackmail! This was a person who did not care for the animal rights movement but was brave enough to do her civic duty and who was terrorised for doing so. During the trial some of the jury looked petrified no wonder they found him not guilty if that is how the police were operating at that time. To my knowledge NEVER has any witness or juror been threatened by animal rights activists.

Talking about how nasty vivisectors are.
It is said in The Times that Heather said to Dan “referring to those who worked inside HLS, “I could kill every last one of them and I wouldn’t think anything of it””. SO WHAT! This was a private conversation at home between 2 adults now if Heather had in fact killed every single last employee of HLS I can understand how this might be relevant but are we now as a population to be judged on everything we say in private? How many times has the phrase “I’m gonna bloody kill …..(insert your own nemesis here)” even when talking about loved ones been used?. Now for those who think it is acceptable to use this as evidence imagine you are on trial and someone has cherry picked the best quotes from 2 years of your private life to show you in your worst possible light. You are letting off steam about the bastard who cut you up at the roundabout, the traffic warden, the idiot who short-changed you, you interfering mother in law , Gordon Brown, Alistair Darling, ALL politicians, ad infinitum it hardly makes you a terrorist. On the other hand maybe it does now you have been warned! Not even a saint, not even Ghandi would look good. Sorry if I am making a false accusation here but I bet in the privacy of their own homes and police stations our enemies even say they would like to kill us I would not expect them to go to prison for it in fact it is their private conversation they can say what they like, I don’t care. Heather did not kill, try to kill or threaten to kill anyone, she had what should have been a private conversation and if that is the worst that they could come up with after bugging an activist house for 2 years then really the defendants have been far more restrained than most of the population. Jeremy Clarkson in the SundayTimes (28/12/2008) writing about sales assistants says “do not sell my details to anyone in India or I will come round in the middle of the night and burn your shop down”, is he a “terrorist” too? This is of course Jeremy being funny not in his own home but in a national paper, do we want him locked away for up to 14 years? (on the other hand……).

Anyway HLS workers and shareholders when they socialise what do they have to say about us? Well we don’t have our own private police force with a blank cheque who can do 24 hour surveillance, use task forces of 700 bullies to smash down doors and drag our opposition off but we do have some stuff from the pro HLS triple iii bulletin board to share with you all, here are a small sample of quotes, note the misogyny:

From “terrified vomiting beagle”, “I wish someone would just slaughter these toerags”.

From “smirking rabbit”, “Perhaps myself and Bozz could spit roast her while the others punch her repeatedly in the face. By the time they’ve finished beating her, I’ll pull up my kecks and peak over her shoulder for any sign of improvement”.

From “Lord Dave” “elephant whore”

“it is easier to monitor any activist if they live near an Army base (don’t ask “why” it just is)”.

Now we have SHAC WATCH to continue from where triple iii left off and they like to publish the names and addresses of activists, even though on at least one occasion only the police had that address. Animal rights activists have published the names and addresses of vivisectors but then those responsible went to prison for it. What are the chances of those involved with SHAC WATCH being prosecuted?

With such an uneven playing field is it really any surprise that the law is broken and held in such contempt?

Not handing in petitions to the government.
The Times accuse SHAC of not handing in petitions. Petitions have been handed in. What happens is that when a substantial amount of signatures are collected I think 250,000 were handed in at some stage probably a lot more(as opposed to the pro vivisection “people’s petition” being online with only 20,000 signatures) they are then handed in. I am not surprised that the police found lots of boxes of petitions, people queued to sign them and they would have been handed in to the government at an opportune moment. As the police have taken them all off somewhere it is rather difficult for anyone to hand them in!

Greg is the leader of the ALF.
No he is not. No one leads the ALF. The ALF is a banner under which activists willing to break the law but who do not wish to harm any living being operate. If you decide to liberate a dog from a farm where s/he is tethered you are an ALF activist (if you want to be and are at least vegetarian) for the duration of the action of mercy. The ALF has no membership, no leaders, no followers. Sorry NETCU but some people are able to operate without being given orders unlike police officers and journalists!

SHAC are trying to kill people.
This is from Will Self writing in the Sunday Times magazine. It is absolute crap. Now if SHAC really did try to kill people everyone should be laughing at the ineptitude of said activists, no dead bodies at all. SHAC have not even tried to threaten to kill ANYONE let alone actually done the deed.
Which leads us onto the subject of violence.

Michelle Rokke got a job at HLS New Jersey USA in 1996. She filmed a small primate being eviscerated whilst still conscious, log on to www.shac.net and watch as the knife slices into the sternum and the victim flinches in agony, this is obscene violence which not one of the HLS workers will ever face. Michelle met a primate called James an inquisitive little soul who she befriended, gradually instead of greeting her at the cage door he slunk down in absolute terror poisoned to death so that we can have yet another chemical cleaner to poison ourselves with. 500 animals are murdered at HLS every day as opposed to feeling a bit upset because someone has sent something yucky in the post, this is an atrocity.

“Ah but they are only animals” no doubt some of you will be saying as indeed was the reaction of our chum CPS sumpremo Alistair Nisbet who implied in his CPS press release that HLS only does medical research . We utterly renounce this. As animal rights activists we believe that we are all animals the name itself derives from the Greek meaning “being with a soul”. There is something called the theory of evolution, we all came from single cell organisms and developed into complex beings capable of thought, feelings, relationships and suffering. To actually believe that we are the pinnacle of evolution is pathetic look at Palestine and Israel, look at people trafficking, the use of torture and the death penalty by many states, the fact that the slave trade is still alive and well, the subjugation of women, the continued extermination of the very eco system on which we depend for our very existence and come back and tell me that our species is anything but a killer ape with delusions of grandeur whose numbers have reached plaque proportions! No doubt by now someone is dusting down the old humans only have rights because they have responsibility argument so just one question, what responsibilities did the mother of baby P have? Accepting that we just another animal may be our only chance of survival as we might then stop ourselves behaving like spoilt brats. A little humility would do us no harm at all.

Some may argue that God put us in charge and that we are somehow divine which I find odd for any scientist especially as we have made such a mess of things but many of us believe in God and Christians, Buddhists, Jews, Muslims, Wiccans, Hindus and atheists have attended SHAC demos.
We also believe that HLS workers are animals like the rest of us therefore they have rights too which is why the violence they inflict on others has never been visited on them and never will be. I have talked quite a few HLS employees over the years and would not wish harm on any of them after all whilst doing a stall in Diss I was told by a man that his daughter worked at HLS and one day she secreted out a box full of rats, other employees (now EX employees) have shown great courage by exposing the cruelty inflicted at HLS. Many more have left the company not because of SHAC or the ALF but because they have found themselves sickened by the abuse. As in slaughterhouses those who cannot quickly kill off part of their soul and become desensitised leave traumatised by the experience and the turnover is great.

No doubt some people reading this only care about human beings and so I would like to tell you about “Belate” which is a pesticide sprayed on crops in the UK which caused 42 children to be born without eyes. It was made by DuPont a customer of HLS and if not actually tested at HLS would most probably have been tested at another contract testing laboratory Covance, Safepharm, Sequani, Wickham labs etc. HLS according to their own website are not diligently working through the night curing cancer they are paid to test things on animals which are then sold making a profit for their customers. This includes artificial sweeteners and additives, household cleaners, paint, industrial chemicals, agro chemicals genetically modified organisms, plastics, anything and everything that might come into contact with humans. Testing a pesticide on a few fish and mice does not however mean that because they did not keel over and die that it is safe to be sprayed all over the place for the next 50 years until the birth defects and increase in cancer rates are proven and it is banned with those responsible either dead or retired. HLS also test veterinary products on animals which involves inducing cystitis in dogs, dosing them, killing them and dissecting them and of course it involves getting maximum profit from factory farmed animals linking up with the meat industry. Dairy cows are deliberately infected with mastitis at HLS hardly life saving research especially as milk products are luxuries not necessities.

When it comes to violence even the Animal Rights Militia are but amateurs compared to HLS. In fact if we look right back from 1999 until now over 8 years I think that out of everything that has happened on both sides I win on suffering the worst violence inflicted as a result of the conflict and of all the media outlets there are only the Hunts Post reported on this in any real depth , no one is interested in reporting police/vivisector perpetuated violence and the omission has led to a rather skewed public perception of these matters. We blocked the A1 with tripods and a police officer broke my femur in several places and smashed up my face by dismantling it with me being 20 feet up in the air. I lost a litre of blood and could have died as a result of his assault. His colleagues did arrest him and eventually charge him with GBH but only did so because the assault was so public and caused such outrage. Their revenge was swift from the arrest and remand in custody of my companion, the raids which took place 2 weeks later, to the harassment and threats only stopped when my lawyer taught them some manners, I have already mentioned how one witness was persecuted. Many activists have been assaulted, unlawfully arrested, threatened, imprisoned, watched, spied on and terrorised. Many of us regard this as part of the price we pay for being activists but others who have never and would never do anything illegal and limit their activities to getting petitions signed and writing polite letters in a so-called democracy are subjected to utterly inappropriate levels of repression. I would urge anyone subjected to police bullying to make a huge fuss about it, believe you me they want people to be frightened of them but they do not like complaints (bad for promotion and figures) or being sued.

Finally a message to all activists even activists who do not believe that this in any way applies to them and are pro vivisection. This is a precedent, the CPS and the police and their overlords in the multinationals have discovered something which will silence anyone who runs any effective campaign against the crimes multinationals are so famous for e.g. selling weapons to despots, making torture equipment, backing genocidal regimes, poisoning the water, air and soil, experimenting on children in poorer countries, killing babies by misleading populations about formula milk and so forth. Some people will go to prison for much longer than if they had beaten someone half to death or raped a child, others will no doubt follow. Read Alistair’s press release at the following link, http://www.cps.gov.uk/news/pressreleases/190_08.html and think about how this methodology could be used against other campaigns the state wants to get rid of. All grass roots activists need to think about security arrangements and worst case scenarios very carefully. I would not even put it past the powers that be to go after the larger well established campaigning groups at some stage such as the Tory party (oh!.. they already have).

A huge part of our defence is not to give in to this repression, SHAC demos continue. Even if you do not agree with SHAC this is a matter of liberty so feel free to look deeper than the national press and ask some questions about proportionality and the increasing attack on civil liberties.

Interestingly the NETCU website is down for some sort of updating but we will respond when they put up what will no doubt be a big biased piece against SHAC.

Negen kapot gesneden bruinvissen op stranden Texel en Vlieland - Dieren waren bijvangst in netten vissers....

Bruinviskadavers op Vlieland en Texel

31-12-2008 Leeuwarder Courant

Whale buried in Dagupan fish cemetery

31-12-2008 By Yolanda Sotelo-Fuertes, Philippine Daily Inquirer, Philippines

DAGUPAN CITY, Philippines—It was a sad ending for 2008 for fishery officials and conservationists, who had to bury an almost 10-meter long whale at the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources' fish cemetery here on Wednesday.

About 100 people who attended the burial were awed by the sheer size of the whale, which had been sawed into several hefty chunks.

Eight men prepare to bury a rare Rissos Dolphin in a newly dug hole in the country's first and lone fish cemetery located inside the 24-hectare National Integrated Fisheries Technology Development Center in Bonuan Binloc in Dagupan City (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dagupan_City).
The wounded dolphin, found a day earlier in San Fabian town, died after attempts to save its life failed. (Punchphoto by Ray Zambrano, 01-10-2006)

The whale measured 9.8 meter long and weighed from 2.5 to 3 tons. It was named Roxanne by reporters and BFAR personnel in honor of 2009 as the Year of the Ox in the Chinese calendar.
Those who witnessed the burial could not help but lament the demise of another gentle sea mammal as they watched its parts being brought down, chunk by chuck, by a big boom truck into a grave.

It took almost three hours to bury the whale at a corner of the 1,000-square meter fish cemetery. It was the 15th sea mammal and the biggest so far to be buried there.

Dr. Westly Rosario, BFAR Center chief, said the sea mammal's species has not yet been verified although it has features of either the Minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostata) or the Bryde's whale (Balaenoptera edeni).
"It is only through DNA tests by which we can determine the species," he said, adding that it was the first time that such kind of whale was seen in the country.

The whale was found floating near the bow hull of a SuperFerry passenger ship at the South Pier 13 in Manila Bay on December 29.
Rosario said the whale could have been dragged by a ship to the harbor. Based on its necropsy, the whale could have drowned, he said

"Sea mammals need to breathe. When put into a canister with preservative solution, their lung tissue sinks, so this whale most probably drowned," he said.
Lung tissue should float if the mammal did not drown, he added. Whales breathe through their nostrils called blow holes, and their lungs.

The necropsy also showed that the whale's stomach was empty and there was not a piece of plastic found there. Whales and dolphins usually die after accidentally swallowing plastics.

Hunt is on for escaped and angry love-sick beaver

causing chaos in Devon

31-12-2008 By Richard Smith, The Mirror, UK

The hunt is on for a love-sick male beaver whose trunk and disorderly behaviour has left a trail of destruction. The six-stone animal escaped from his enclosure and has been felling trees to build a lodge and attract a female.

But trackers believe the days on the run are numbered for the eight-year-old beaver, who eloped with two females that have since been recaptured.

His owner, Derek Gow, 43, said: “I know where he is. The problem is he has established a 2km territory.”
Derek has made traps from metal and covered them in the scent of a female.

He said: “They don’t exactly sell beaver traps at B&Q. Wood is no good for obvious reasons. He’d gnaw his way out.”

Derek has followed the runaway’s trail for 20 miles along the River Tamar from the 120-acre Upcott Grange Farm in Lifton, Devon – where he keeps 24 of the animals under licence – to Gunnislake, Cornwall.

Derek thinks the rodent will be holed up somewhere as the river is too wide to be dammed.

Whale, dolphin sanctuary discovered in East Timor

31-12-2008 ABC Radio Australia, Australia

Marine scientists say they've found a "hot spot" of dolphins and whales, many of them protected species, off the coast of East Timor. East Timorese and Australian researchers working for the Timor government discovered the high-density community of cetaceans, which migrate through deep channels off the Timor coast.

The Wetar and Ombai Straits are home to a huge community of whales and dolphins, many of them protected species. [Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society]

The animals include blue and beaked whales, short-finned pilot whales, melon headed whales and six dolphin species. "We were all amazed to see such an abundance, diversity and density of cetaceans," principal scientist Karen Edyvane said. "Most of them are actually protected."

She says the team discovered that ocean channels of the Wetar and Ombai straits, which are up to 3,000 metres deep, are a major migratory route for marine animals moving between the Pacific and Indian oceans. Correspondents say the channels are also used by American nuclear and Australian navy submarines travelling through the Indonesian islands.

Californië sleept Amerikaanse regering voor rechter vanwege wijzigingen in wetgeving bedreigde diersoorten

California sues federal government over changes

in Endangered Species Act

The state attorney general's office says new rules put California's threatened and endangered wildlife in greater danger and could cost the state more to protect the plants and animals on the list.

31-12-2008 By Julie Cart, The Los Angeles Times, USA

California Atty. Gen. Jerry Brown filed suit against the federal government Tuesday, charging that a recent rule change by the Bush administration illegally gutted provisions of the Endangered Species Act, essentially quashing the role of science in decisions made by federal agencies.

Ken Alex, senior assistant attorney general, said the state took the action because it has both the legal right and the moral responsibility to protect California's environment and resources. The new federal rules, he said, could put California's threatened and endangered wildlife in greater jeopardy and could ultimately cost the state more to protect plants and animals on California's Endangered Species List.

The federal rules, made final on Dec. 16, eliminated mandated independent scientific review of federal agency plans if the agency determined the projects pose no threat to protected species. Further, the new rules removed the requirement to consider the effects of greenhouse gases on protected species and their habitat.

Critics argued that agencies such as the Bureau of Land Management do not have sufficient scientific expertise to properly evaluate threats to wildlife. And, they said, the rules would make it more difficult to protect animals such as the polar bear, which was placed on the Endangered Species List because of the effects of climate change on the bear's melting habitat.

In announcing the new rules, Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne emphasized that the modifications were minimal and did not amend the law. He said the changes were common-sense streamlining of bureaucratic processes and would not imperil protected species.

"We absolutely disagree," Alex said. "These regulations are illegal. It's consistent with the Bush administration's attack on science."

Several environmental groups have also sued over the changes, and Alex said it was likely the cases will be combined, possibly in a California court. An Interior spokesman said the agency does not comment on lawsuits.

It is not uncommon for California to sue the federal government. In recent years the state has taken on Washington regarding federal forest policy, clean-air and clean-water rules, and automobile emissions standards.

Alex said California has won practically every case that has been ruled on.

- willen opvoeden zonder 'straf'

Herten in Zeeland vanaf morgen vogelvrij - Jagers mogen dieren gaan afschieten

Jagers mogen Zeeuwse herten schieten

31-12-2008 Door een onzer redacteuren, NRC Handelsblad

Rotterdam, 31 dec.

HLS' animal breeder gets an evening visit
Harlan in Bicester Breed Small Mamals For HLS

Monday, 29th December Harlan, Blackthorn, Bicester. As darkness set in Oxfordshire, the SHACtivists arrived for play time. We announced our arrival to the workers and security through our megaphones and as we approached the fence security could be seen franticly calling the police.

We stayed until we where sure everyone knew why we where there. It was only a passing visit but these evil greedy companies need to realise that as long as people have compassion in their hearts they wont be able to just pass by places of extreme animal abuse leaving them unchallenged.

Singapore warned on dolphin imports

31-12-2008 Solomon Star News, Solomon Islands

SINGAPORE has been cautioned not to accept the bottlenose dolphins exported from the Solomon Islands. Chairman of the Mexican Congress, Committee of Environment, Natural Resources and Fisheries Senator Jorge Legorreta wrote to the Singapore Minister for National Development Mah Bau Tan on this.

This was after the recent shipment of bottlenose dolphins from here to the Philippines, which will be later transferred to Singapore. Another consignment is reported to be shipped from here soon.
In the letter obtained by the Solomon Star, which was copied to Prime Minister Dr Derek Sikua and Fisheries minister Nollen Leni, M Legorreta cautioned Mr Tan that there are plans for bottlenose dolphins from the Solomon Islands to be exported to Singapore.

Wild-caught dolphins in the Solomon Islands languish in cramped and squalid sea pens as they await sale to marine parks worldwide (2006)

“We understand that plans are underway to import a number of indo Pacific bottlenose dolphins from the Solomon Islands to your country. We wish to share our country’s experience to assist with your decision making process as you consider this import,” he said in the letter.

The senator said the 28 bottlenose dolphins exported to Mexico from the Solomon Islands in 2003 has tainted their country’s reputation. “In July 2003, Mexico allowed an import of 28 dolphins from the Solomon Islands despite widespread criticism from CITES and non government organisations (http://csiwhalesalive.org/csi08105.html).

“Twelve of the dolphins eventually died which we see as an appalling mortality rate compared to the life of these friendly mammals living in the wild,” he stated in the letter. “Mexico’s experience with this single import led to our government imposing an outright ban on importation and exportation of live cetaceans for entertainment purposes and this ban is still in place,” the Mexican senator said. He said Mexico’s international reputation was damaged because of the negative publicity surrounding the single import from the Solomon Islands.

“We therefore urge the Singapore government to consider our experience and the mortality suffered by these animals when considering permits for the imports from the Solomon Islands,” he said.

'Selectief terrorisme'.....

Illegale acties dierenactivisten ‘selectief

terrorisme’ voor media en politiek

30-12-2008

Het dierproefcentrum Huntingdon Life Sciences in Engeland is berucht.

Pick your own day in Leicestershire

SHACtivists hit HLS' customers and suppliers in the Midlands

30-12-2008 IndyMedia UK

Monday, 29th December

Harlan Sera-Lab - Supplier (Animals)
Hillcrest, Dodgeford Ln, Belton, Loughborough, Leicestershire, LE12 9TE.
For anyone that has never been to a Harlan site, it is worth going, to remind ourselves of what we fight for, to hear the dogs barking in long sheds in which they are packed in awaiting their horrific fate at places like Huntindon Life Sciences.

We must never forget that these places will close as long as we keep up the pressure, we have seen Harlan sites and many other companies which breed animals for vivisection closed under the pressure put on them by the animal liberation movement. It is also important to remember how congratulatory the media where when these sites closed, despite the current media reports full of twisted lies regarding the activists recently found guilty, the public are on our side and wish us the very best on our journey against animal abuse. When Huntington was exposed on C4 television the British public where furious and when Huntingdon close we will once again be the ones in the right in the eyes of the media.

AstraZenica - Customer
Bakewell Road, Loughborough, Leicestershire, LE11 5RH.
Next stop was a HLS customer, this disgusting company pay for the horrific acts of violence that take place within HLS, and as long as this violence against innocent animals continues we will continue to find ourselves on the doorsteps of companies like Astrazenica.

Its very simple Astrazenica: deal with HLS, deal with SHAC.

Thermo Fisher - Supplier (Laboratory Equipment)
Bishop Meadow Road, Loughborough, Leicestershire, LE11 5RG.
Thermofisher where only round the corner so we thought we better pop round for a quick demo.

We lined the front of their building, our placards held proud and our voices crying out against the abuse that takes place inside HLS, we let every worker inside know how strongly we felt about them doing business with HLS. As we left we promised to return time and time again until they drop HLS.

Mettler-Toledo Ltd - Supplier (Laboratory Equipment)
64 Boston Road, Beaumont Leys, Leicester, Leicestershire, LE4 1AW.
Yet another company that thinks it can supply Huntingdon with the equipment they need to abuse animals without feeling the wrath of SHAC. Wrong.

We let all your workers know exactly what HLS do and how your company plays a part in the abuse, your neighbors where shocked to learn they where next to such a vile company. See you soon.

Thousands protest against Indian tiger reserve

30-12-2008 By S. Murari, Reuters India

CHENNAI, India (Reuters) - More than 15,000 people in southern India protested against the extension of a new tiger reserve Tuesday, despite official assurances that they will not lose their homes to the sanctuary. Representatives from all parties in Tamil Nadu state, including the state's ruling party, took part in what is the third such protest since November against the extension of the Mudumalai wildlife sanctuary (http://www.mudumalai.com/), police said.

The state government declared Mudumalai as a tiger reserve earlier this year as part of a federal government initiative, called "Project Tiger," to boost the country's dwindling numbers of big cats.

There were about 40,000 tigers in India a century ago. A government census report published this year says the tiger population has fallen to 1,411, down from 3,642 in 2002, largely due to dwindling habitat and poaching.

A special panel set up by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said in 2006 that thousands of poor villagers inside India's tiger reserves would have to be relocated to protect the endangered animals from poachers and smugglers. Some experts have put the number at around 300,000.
Poachers and smugglers exploit the grinding poverty of forest villagers to keep them on their side. Authorities have tried educating the villagers, handing out monetary incentives and drafting them as informants.

Tuesday's demonstrators were not against the declaration of a 321 sq km (125 sq mile) core area but against the creation of a buffer zone, Rajeev Srivastava, a field director for Project Tiger said.
Around 350 families living in the core area have been given a 1 million rupee ($20,800) payout, but those in the buffer areas fear they will be evicted, Srivastava said.

"We have no intention to dislodge anyone from the buffer zone. In fact, people in this zone will be involved in the project as trackers and guides for eco-tourists to enhance their means of livelihood."

The Mudumalai wildlife sanctuary is part of the larger Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve on a mountain range that spans three Indian states.
There are 48 tigers in the Nilgiri Reserve across which the tigers are free to roam, Srivastava added.

Friesch Dagblad kritisch over ondergrondse acties dierenactivisten....

Hardere acties...

30-12-2008 Friesch Dagblad, 'Hoofdartikel'

Amerikaanse staat Zuid Dakota wil haar proefdieronderzoekers beter beschermen tegen acties dierenactivisten

Proposal shields animal research

Threats by activists cited, but legislator says openness vital

30-12-2008 Elizabeth Reiss • Melanie Brandert, Argus Leader, USA

The board, which oversees South Dakota's university system, plans to introduce a bill in the Legislature that would shield the identities of animal researchers from publication. But others say the proposal goes too far, infringing free speech and obscuring information that should stay public.

Animal researchers and their facilities have been under attack across the country, Board of Regents president Harvey Jewett said. Although no such violence has occurred in South Dakota, Jewett and others fear it could happen here.

A faculty member at UCLA was the victim of an attempted car bombing earlier this year, and a package rigged with razor blades was mailed to another professor, according to news reports. Police attributed the attacks to extreme animal rights activists. Similar incidents have occurred elsewhere in recent years.

"This is one of those things that is just disastrous when it happens," Jewett said of activists caught releasing animals from research facilities. "A scientist may have animals under study for three years, researching a drug that might cure diabetes. Three years of research gone down the tube cannot be replaced and has to be started over. That might mean a drug that could have wonderful benefits would be three years delayed."

If passed, the South Dakota law would make it a criminal penalty to publish the names and addresses of researchers or their family members and also would make it illegal for protesters to enter researchers' property to interfere with their academic practices.

'A protection issue'
Some of the names that would be withheld are state employees who research at universities. Others are private researchers.

"It's a protection issue," Jewett said. "There are laws that prevent people from breaking into fire stations and disabling fire trucks. If it gets to the point of danger or hurting people's ability to work, society needs to give them some form of protection."

However, officials from some animal rights organizations said the act violates free speech.

"Most of these people are funded by public money, and the public has the right to know what they are doing with this money," said Camille Hankins of the North American Animal Liberation Press Office. "There is no public accountability. We animal rights people are looking for some transparency."

A federal law, the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act of 2005, protects animal researchers against threats and harassment. But Jewett said a state law would allow local police agencies to take action against such threats.

Sen. Gene Abdallah, R-Sioux Falls, said he understands the regents' point of view, but questioned why researchers' names need to be kept private when names of police officers and public officials are public. "If I thought there was a need for it, I would support it," he said.

State House agriculture and natural resources committee chairman Rep. Tom Brunner, R-Nisland, questioned what type of unintentional consequences the bill might have.
"Sometimes you have to weigh what's important - privacy or the right to know," he said.

Scientists in favor
David Francis, director of South Dakota Center for Infectious Disease Research and Vaccinology at South Dakota State University, said he has heard of researchers in other states being harassed in their homes. He called the proposed bill reasonable.
"I certainly don't want to be harassed, and I'm sure other people don't want to either, with regard to their work with animals," he said.

Melanie Clark, director of University of South Dakota's Animal Resource Center, said she hopes the law passes.
"We'll feel more safe from people who don't feel that using animals for research is acceptable," Clark said. "A lot of times, they do things that are militant; they will stalk researchers and their families and threaten the children of researchers."

Clark and Kevin Kephart, SDSU vice president for research, both said the researchers follow federal regulations governing animal research.
"We already adhere stringently to federal protocols and guidelines on research that involves animals," Kephart said.

Zeldzame Maleise tapir geboren in Artis Amsterdam

Zeldzame tapir in Artis

Firefighters use baby oxygen masks to revive six

cats overcome by smoke in house blaze

29-12-2008 By Daily Mail Reporter, Mail Online, UK

Firefighters used baby oxygen masks to revive six pet cats after the moggies were overcome by smoke when a blaze ripped through a house. The crews used breathing apparatus adaptors usually reserved for babies to revive the animals who were found lying unconscious in the smoke-logged building.

A seventh cat died in the fire which started in the kitchen of the house.

Paws for breath: A firefighter uses breathing apparatus usually given to babies to revive one of the cats that suffered smoke inhalation in the blaze.

A spokesman for Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said that crews battled their way into the smoke-filled room to recover the animals.
'We were told about the cats and ran around the house in the thick smoke trying to locate them all,' he said.
'Unfortunately, one of them, which had sheltered in the bathroom above the kitchen, was overcome by smoke and died.

'We took them outside and fitted them with baby oxygen masks.
'A few of them were unconscious or a little woozy but they soon came around.'
A multi-plug adapter which overheated was believed to have caused the blaze, which badly damaged the house in High Wycombe.

Discussie in Canada over verbod gebruik 'hakapik' in zeehondenjacht - Jacht bij Newfoundland begint in maart

Banning hakapik won't calm seal hunt critics: Sealer

'They’ll just find something else to pick at'

29-12-2008 By Chris Shannon, Edmonton Journal, Canada

SYDNEY, N.S. - A Cape Breton sealer says an attempt by the federal government to put a more humane face on the seal hunt by quietly instituting new rules over the weekend will do nothing to subdue criticism of the annual hunt.

The amendments to the Marine Mammal Regulations on Saturday, following the release of a report from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, include using a firearm rather than a club called a hakapik to kill seals older than one year. However, this comprises only a small percentage of the seals harvested each year.

Shane Briand said the perception of the hunt, seen by many animal welfare groups and the European Union as barbaric, will not change because of the new rules.
“They’ll just find something else to pick at,” Briand said, speaking of those groups opposed to the hunt. “If we don’t use the hakapik, they’re going to say you didn’t shoot it right, or you didn’t skin it right.
“There’s going to be blood in the ice now . . . because everybody’s going to be shooting seals and it’s going to be twice as much blood because when you hakapik you don’t see that much blood.”

The regulations will also ensure the skulls of seals must be crushed and the animals bled for a full minute before they are skinned. Sealers will find themselves under close scrutiny as the federal government plans to beef up enforcement, which will include the use of helicopter-mounted surveillance cameras.

The amendments “are proposed to provide for a more acceptable humane method of harvesting seals,” stated the executive summary of the proposed regulations.

In the report, DFO said the new restrictions would ensure sealers are still able to make a living by ensuring Canada would not come under any EU ban.
It estimates it will cost $1.8 million to $3.6 million to implement the proposed restrictions.
Sealers are preparing for the annual grey seal hunt next month. The harp seal hunt takes place in the gulf and off the northern Newfoundland coast in March.

PVV wil debat dierenterrorisme

29-12-2008 Reformatorisch Dagblad

Australia accused over anti-whaling ship 'crimes'

30-12-2008 Siobhain Ryan, The Australian, Australia

AUSTRALIA has been accused of breaching its international obligations by allowing the "criminal" anti-whaling vessel Steve Irwin to use its ports, after the boat's high-seas collision with a Japanese ship last week.

Glenn Inwood, the New Zealand-based spokesman for Japan's Institute of Cetacean Research, which supports culling whales for research, yesterday called on Canberra to close its ports to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society's protest ship, which is chasing the summer whaling fleet.

"The Australian Government has allowed its ports to be used by Sea Shepherd to conspire to commit criminal acts at sea, and I think the Australian Government should look at its role to regulate what goes on in its ports," Mr Inwood said.

On Boxing Day, the Steve Irwin hit Japanese ship Kaiko Maru and protesters threw bottles on to the whale-spotting vessel. Sea Shepherd blamed the collision on an abrupt starboard turn by the whaler, and said the bottles were filled with rotten butter and a mix of methyl cellulose and dye.
The Institute of Cetacean Research said the bottles contained butyric acid and the Steve Irwin deliberately rammed the Kaiko Maru, damaging its topside starboard rear bulwark.

Yesterday, a spokeswoman for Foreign Affairs Minister Stephen Smith said the Government respected the right of individuals and groups to protest peacefully.
"But no matter the objective, we do not condone and indeed we condemn dangerous, violent or illegal protest activities, including any activity that may jeopardise safety at sea or could lead to injury or loss of life," she said.

Mr Smith has left the protesters and whalers to wage their own war in the remote, inhospitable Southern Ocean after deciding against sending a Customs ship to monitor the whaling, as the Government did last year.

Mr Smith's spokeswoman said any decision on the Steve Irwin's access to Australian ports "would be made at the appropriate time and in accordance with relevant international and domestic law".
But the Government is considered unlikely to block access, after allowing the Steve Irwin to berth in Brisbane ahead of the summer whaling season.
It also needs to shore up its environmental credentials after failing to act on an election promise to enforce court injunctions against Japanese whalers.

Environment Minister Peter Garrett has chosen instead to appoint Sandy Holloway as whale envoy and to continue earlier diplomatic efforts at the International Whaling Commission.
Mr Inwood said, however, those efforts had had no impact on Japan's whaling plans. This summer, Japan expected to kill 850 minke whales and 50 fin whales.

It put its plans to hunt humpback whales on hold until the end of this summer -- a decision Mr Inwood attributed to US, rather than Australian, diplomacy.
But he said humpbacks could be back in the Japanese "research program" next year.
"It's not an issue that can be resolved by Australia appointing a whale envoy," Mr Inwood said. "It's bigger than that."

Jager schoot eigen hond dood

Anti Dierproeven Coalitie houdt publieksactie in centrum Leuven - Protest gericht tegen dierproeven in Katholieke Universiteit Leuven

Japanese whaling fleet chased: activists

29-12-2008 The Age, Australia

Anti-whaling campaigners say they have driven the Japanese whaling fleet from Australian Antarctic waters and into New Zealand's. The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society's ship Steve Irwin located the Japanese fleet on December 20 and has been pursuing it since, society founder and Steve Irwin captain Paul Watson said in a statement.

"We have chased the whalers for over 800 miles (1,280 km) since last Saturday through bad weather and heavy ice conditions," he said.
"They have fled eastward and they are continuing eastward and we are on their tail and we will keep on their tail."

The crew of the Steve Irwin had close encounters with two vessels in the Japanese fleet and observed a third ship from the air, but had not closed with the fleet because it had not stopped or whaled since December 20, Mr Watson said.
The fleet is now in New Zealand's EEZ, in waters off the Ross Dependency.

"What is now good news for the whales in Australian waters is now bad news for the whales in the waters south of New Zealand," Mr Watson said.
"They are still targeting endangered and protected whales in the waters of an established international whale sanctuary and thus they are still in violation of international conservation law and acting under the principles of the United Nations World Charter for Nature, we will continue to pursue, harass and intervene against their blatantly illegal lethal assaults on the whales."

The Steve Irwin has fuel and provisions to continue the pursuit until mid-January, before it will be forced to re-fuel in New Zealand, he said.

The statement comes a day after Japan's whale research body, The Institute of Cetacean Research, said the crew of the Steve Irwin had endangered a whaling crew and scientists on the whale=spotting vessel Kaiko Maru by throwing bottles of acid and ramming it.

The Japanese whaling fleet plans to kill about 1,000 whales this summer, using a loophole in a 1986 global whaling moratorium that allows "lethal research" on the ocean giants.
The Australian government has appealed for calm on the high seas.

28-12-2008 - Bite Back (17-12-2008)

Schappen vol transgene muizen maken onze rondleiding compleet.

Ethics group hot under collar over devils

29-12-2008 Andrew Darby, Hobart, The Age, Australia

THE use of a research device on the disease-plagued Tasmanian devil has been banned because of the alarming disappearance of subject animals in the wild. Up to 18 wild devils fitted with data-gathering collars are missing, believed dead, at Narawntapu National Park in Tasmania's north.

The losses follow signs that the collars were troubling some animals. Their necks became chafed, and in two cases devils were found with their legs caught in the collars.
The University of Tasmania's animal ethics committee finally withdrew approval for the research when it became concerned at the number of animals that could not be retrieved.

"It's not reasonable to put equipment on animals if there is a possibility of them carrying it for the rest of their lives," said the university's animal welfare adviser, Barrie Wells.

The committee had looked critically at the collars, partly because of the potential for entanglement, Dr Wells said. "So we decided to pull the plug."
The setback comes as scientists and zoos nationally race against time to help the carnivorous marsupial survive the ravages of devil facial tumour disease. The rare transmissible cancer is passed on by biting, in fights over food or during sex.
It has killed at least half the wild devil population in about a decade, and the state's Save the Tasmanian Devil Steering Committee predicts the animal will be extinct in the wild within 25 years.
Responses include genetic work and establishing an "ark" of captive devils at zoos around the mainland.

The chief scientist of the joint university-State Government devil program, Hamish McCallum, said data logged from the collars could have helped establish which animals made more contact than others and were likely "super spreaders" of the disease. This might allow the selective removal of those animals, slowing the disease's progress.

The device, about the size of a large dog collar, included a VHF radio transmitter to track movement, enabling the devils' movements around the park to be followed within 50 to 100 metres.
But the thick-necked devil is a difficult subject to collar. Of 40 collars used in 2006, Professor McCallum said seven were still outstanding, and 11 of 40 used in 2007 had not been recovered.

He said the disappearance rate was not inconsistent with a mortality rate for devils increased by the disease and drought, and there was no direct evidence that a collar had caused a devil's death.
But an experienced, anonymous member of the devil program disputed the claim that the mortality rate was normal.
Dr Wells said it was possible the collars could be approved again by the ethics committee if a safety release mechanism was developed.

Politie in Madhya Pradesh (India) betrokken bij doden tijgers, luipaarden en andere beschermde dieren

Cops 'poach' tigers at Kanha reserve

28-12-2008 Meenal Dubey, India Today, India

Authorities at the Kanha Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh have alleged the involvement of local police officers in the poaching of wild animals, including protected species such as tigers and leopards. In the shocking revelation, park authorities said the police were poaching animals to claim the reward money for seizing animal parts, particularly tiger and leopard skins.

In the past six months, one tiger and three leopards were killed and their skins 'seized' by the Balaghat police. This apparently routine seizure turned out to be an elaborate poaching expedition.

The allegation has been made in a letter by the park authorities to the chief wildlife warden of Madhya Pradesh, H. S. Pabla.
"We suspect policemen finance such operations to claim monetary rewards from the forest authorities," said R. P. Singh, director of Kanha Tiger Reserve. "I have written a letter highlighting these facts to the state’s chief wildlife warden." Pabla confirmed he had received Singh's letter. He said, "The authorities at the Kanha Tiger Reserve have raised suspicions about the role of the police in poaching. We are yet to contact senior police officers on this." Singh has also written to the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), urging intervention. This letter reiterates their suspicion regarding the involvement of the police.

A source said: "Suspicion of the police involvement rose in November after a tiger was found killed in the buffer zone of Kanha. Around the same time, the Balaghat police claimed to have seized a tiger skin. However, they refused to share details of the case or that of the accused with the forest department. This raised doubts because a few locals claimed the police were involved in the killing." The inspector-general of police at Balaghat, C. V. Muniraju, said: "This allegation of animal killings is not correct. This is the first time I am hearing of something like this." Park authorities, however, stick to their theory.

"A part of the Kanha Tiger Reserve falls under Balaghat, which is a Naxal affected area. Balaghat police get huge funds from the Centre to tackle Naxals and also to build up their network of informers. We suspect some of the money is being diverted to fund the killings by informers, usually with a criminal background. The animal kills are either done by the informers or by other people on hire. These facts have been mentioned in the letter," said Singh.

He also described the alleged modus operandi. "It is difficult for the police to penetrate the Naxal area. So, we believe they dole out about Rs 5,000 to a local, who then carries out the operation. A prey animal like a deer or a goat is first poisoned and its carcass then left out in the open to lure the tiger/leopard, who is then killed. Sometimes, the animal is killed by electrocution. After a leopard or the tiger dies, it is skinned by the locals, who hand it over to the police. The police then present the skins before the media at a news conference and claim the reward money of about Rs 25,000 from the forest department," added Singh.

So how did the forest officials conclude the involvement of the police? "Ideally, when the police seize parts of a poached animal, they must provide us with the information on the body parts of the slain animal. In all the four cases mentioned (one tiger, three leopards), the police could not pinpoint where and how the animal was killed or who was involved. The police did not probe this even after we pointed out the discrepancies. So, we told them to present proper facts before staking a claim for a reward," said Singh.

HOW THEY TRICK ALL
• A part of the Kanha Tiger Reserve falls under Balaghat, which is a Naxalaffected area

• Policemen give about Rs 5,000 to a local, usually a police informer, who then carries out the poaching

• A prey like a deer or a goat is first poisoned and its carcass is then left out in the open to lure a tiger

• Once the animal, usually a leopard or tiger, comes out in the open, it is killed

• The animal is then skinned by the locals, who hand it over to the police

• The policemen then present the skins before the media and claim a reward money of about Rs 25,000 from the forest department

UNC to expand animal research facility

Construction under way in White Cross

28-12-2008 Eric Ferreri, Staff Writer, Chapel Hill News, USA

A UNC (http://www.unc.edu/) plan to expand an animal storage and research facility in rural western Orange County is the latest in a wave of projects, real or rumored, to put residents on edge. UNC is in the early stage of a three-phase plan to add several buildings and some infrastructure to its Research Resources Facility, a decades-old animal storage operation known as "The Farm."

The facility is off Orange Chapel Clover Garden Road in the White Cross area, where residents already fear UNC might build an airport and where county officials plan to build a solid waste transfer station.
The expansion is raising environmental concerns among residents who get their water from wells and are accustomed to a quiet, bucolic lifestyle.

Undercover Investigation at UNC-Chapel Hill

Laura Streitfeld, who lives off Morrow Mill Road, worries about animal waste contaminating the local water supply. She said UNC began its expansion quietly and only started answering questions when neighbors began asking them.
"I feel like we don't know too much about it," she said. "Neighbors found out about it becuse they found surveyer's tape on their property."

UNC has held two information sessions in recent weeks to address concerns and Linda Convissor, UNC's local relations director, said the university is following proper environmental procedures.
She said one widely held belief -- that UNC built a waste lagoon on the property -- is false. A large retention basin is for water that has been filtered, treated and will ultimately be spray-irrigated -- under state rules -- into nearby woods.
"It's not a lagoon; it's a holding pond," she said.

Convissor also knocked back claims that a well UNC built for its expanded facilities will draw water away from local homes.
"There's no reason to expect that to happen," she said.

Expansion of The Farm is under way. A new animal storage building is just about complete, as is the new well and water treatment plant, Convissor said. Three more buildings are planned in the next phase two for animal storage and one for research support and animal treatment but only one is funded so far, she said. Additional facilities are planned for a third phase.

The storage facilities would house hundreds of dogs, pigs, rodents and sheep used in medical research at UNC, but they do not signal a shift in research priorities at the medical school, said John Bradfield, UNC's director of laboratory animal medicine.

"The real reason we have to expand, to put it bluntly, is that UNC has been pretty successful doing research," he said. "Investigators have been successful getting grant funding, so this is the university's attempt to keep that going. These facilities are being conceived and planned to keep up with that growth."

Mouse suffering from severe lesions in UNC lab

Much of the research involves hemophilia and uses a dog colony UNC breeds and keeps at the facility. At any time, UNC has 80 to 100 of these dogs, which Bradfield said are mixed breeds and useful in research because they have naturally occurring hemophilia -- a blood disorder.
"It's unique and allows for some really important science to be conducted," he said.

A separate colony of similar size is used in muscular dystrophy research because those dogs have a disease that mimicks muscular dystrophy, Bradfield said.
Animals that die there are incinerated on site, he said.

Some residents acknowledge their frustration comes from the seemingly endless parade of projects that are coming or may hit their quiet community. The airport discussion colors all conversation these days, even though there is no plan yet. UNC consultants, in searching for an airport site to replace Horace Williams airport facility in 2005, tagged a patch of land in White Cross as the best of several potential locations other than Raleigh-Durham International Airport.
With the legislature creating an airport authority that would locate, buld and operate an airport in the county, residents have their hackles up.

Wendy Curtis, who lives on MIllikan Road, less than a mile from the UNC research facility, said that while she is among those residents worried about the expanded facility's effects on the environment, the airport is her primary concern.
"It's a combo of the two; we're getting hit from all areas," she said. "This is a community that is supposed to be kept pristine."

In Nepal gefokte rhesusapen eindigen in VS laboratoria voor onderzoek biologische oorlogsvoering, drugsverslaving en genetische manipulatie

Nepal's monkeys destination: bio-warfare, drug

addiction and genetic engineering

28-12-2008 Gateway to Hell Campaign

The campaign has received yet more damning documents from the American owners of Nepal's monkey farms. This time we have detailed information on their plans to build a new prison complex in Texas where they will breed Nepal's monkeys for American government research projects!

One of the rhesus monkeys in the Nepalese breeding facility at Lele.

SOUTHWEST FOUNDATION FOR BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH -- CONSTRUCTION OF SPF (Red.: SPECIFIC PATHOGEN-FREE) RHESUS MACAQUE FACILITY (0276)

NPRC UNIT: ADMINISTRATIVE

SUBPROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The proposed construction will provide a complex of six buildings to be used for SPF Indian-origin rhesus monkeys and using them in AIDS-related research. The breeding facilities will consist of four buildings each with 14 indoor-outdoor cages.

Total square footage of these buildings is 14,864. The breeding cages are separated into four buildings to reduce disease transmission. A climate-controlled building (544 sq. ft.) will be constructed in close association with the breeding cage buildings to be used for treating ill animals.

The SPF breeding colony to be housed in this complex is funded by a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Cooperative Agreement (U42-RR16024). Under this cooperative agreement, the SNPRC will produce SPF rhesus monkeys for use primarily by NIH-grantees.

Source

In return for the money to build the new complex to house Nepal's monkeys, the SFBR has agreed to supply them to any American government funded projects!

The leaked documents show clear evidence that Nepal's monkeys will be used for research into bio-warfare, drug addiction and genetic engineering experiments if they are allowed to be exported.

What is also clear from this information is that the monkey business in Nepal is that it's actually the American government who are behind this corrupt monkey farming as a cheap supply of innocent victims for their "bio-defence shield" research!

Prince accused of 'hitting his dog'

27-12-2008 Southern Daily Echo, UK
Animal charities have accused Prince Edward of setting a "sickening example" as pictures showed him apparently hitting his dog. Buckingham Palace said Edward waved his stick in a bid to break up a fight between his animals over a dead pheasant at the Queen's Sandringham estate, Norfolk.

But animal rights campaigners spoke of their fury at images which they believed showed Edward apparently striking one of the dogs.

Other Royals on the shoot included Prince William, Prince Andrew and Prince Philip, it was reported.
Any person caught harming animals could face prosecution, campaigners said.

Barry Hugill, spokesman for the League Against Cruel Sports, added: "People in blood sports tend to show a complete disregard for the welfare of animals. He has set a truly sickening example."

Andrew Tyler, director of Animal Aid, added: "It is an offence to cause an animal unnecessary suffering.
"Hitting a dog is a pathetic, cowardly and vicious act - it would appear he has had a royal tantrum."

A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: "It has not been determined that he did strike the dog.
"He broke up the fight with the dogs and pictures show him waving his stick around. We cannot confirm, however, whether he struck the dog."

Researchers looking for whale tangled in debris

27-12-2008 The Associated Press, Sun Sentinel, USA

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Researchers from Florida State University are looking for a right whale that was tangled in debris off St. Johns County coast. The whale vanished Friday near Crescent Beach before researchers could finish freeing it. The whale had some kind of rope or line wrapped around it.

They organized a team that removed about 360 feet of line and attached a buoy with a transmitter to track the whale's location, but the buoy isnt transmitting.

Right whales are endangered animals that raise their young on the Florida and Georgia coast each winter.

Whales entangled in fishing gear can have trouble moving normally or eating, and in some cases develop dangerous infections where the lines cut into their flesh.

The whale spotted Friday is 2 years old and was last seen headed south.

Shark horror: snorkeller dead, kayakers menaced

28-12-2008 Rebecca Richardson and Claire Kelly, The Sydney Morning Herald, Australia

THIS is the horrifying moment when a giant shark menaced kayakers off Sydney yesterday. White pointers caused terror on opposite sides of Australia yesterday, with snorkeller Brian Guest killed as he swam with his son at a beach near Perth.

Monster fright . . . a great white shark circles two kayakers and nudges the tinnie about a kilometre off Sydney's Long Reef yesterday.

Sydney paddlers Justin Stanger and Steve Kulscar were lucky to survive, with Mr Kulscar falling from his craft as the four-metre white pointer circled them about a kilometre off Long Reef.

Fisherman Glenn Morgan was in a runabout nearby when he saw a large fin break the water near the kayakers about 11am.
"All of a sudden I saw one bloke topple off his kayak, so we cut our anchor rope and went straight over to him and got him in the boat," Mr Morgan told The Sun-Herald last night.
The shark came perilously close as the two kayakers fastened their craft to the tinnie.
It circled for at least another 10minutes before leaving.
"The adrenalin was just pumping," Mr Morgan said. "I reckon they would have died if we weren't out there - the shark was pretty hungry."
"I might get him a case of beer - that's the least I can do," one of the men told the Seven Network.

Mr Guest, 51, and his son, Daniel, 24, were diving for crabs off their local beach near Rockingham, 30 kilometres south of Perth, when the former suddenly disappeared about 7am.
Daniel had heard his father cry out and had seen the shark and a "heap of blood" in the water.
"Something very traumatic and pretty violent has happened there and we are treating it as a probable shark attack," acting police inspector Mark Valentine said.

Police, marine rescue patrols and three helicopters searched unsuccessfully for Mr Guest.
"[Daniel] was on the beach shaking and looked really white, and he was just really shocked," resident Luke Tubbs said.

Family spokesman and policeman Steve Kent said Mr Guest, a banker, was a devoted husband and father who knew the dangers of the ocean.
"[He was] an avid fisherman, an avid diver and a loving husband and father," Sergeant Kent said.
Mr Guest had campaigned to protect sharks from hunting.
"Our place on earth is not so sacred that we remove every threat that exists," he said in a forum about sharks on the Western Angler website.
"Every surfer, fisherman and diver has far more chance of being killed by bees, drunk drivers, teenage car thieves and lightning."

Twee dierenactivisten in Emmen gearresteerd - Dierenvrienden protesteerden tegen bont bij modewinkel Heldring

Emmer politie arresteert dierenactivisten

Sea Shepherd clashes with Japanese whalers

27-12-2008 ABC News, Australia

Anti-whaling protesters and a Japanese whaling ship have clashed in waters off Antarctica. The crew of the Sea Shepherd boat the Steve Irwin (http://www.seashepherd.org/news-and-media/news-081226-1.html) say they threw bottles of rotten butter and non-toxic dye at the whaling ship when the two vessels met in dense fog on Boxing Day.

Clash: A photo supplied by Sea Shepherd shows the Steve Irwin protest vessel alongside a Japanese whaler on Boxing Day (Sea Shepherd)

The Steve Irwin's captain Paul Watson says the aim is to drive the Japanese vessel out of Australian waters, where he says it is in breach of a Federal Court order.
He says the two ships collided, but there was no serious damage to either.

A spokesman for the Institute of Cetacean Research in Tokyo says Japan has a legal right to conduct whale research and the Sea Shepherd is a terrorist vigilante group.
The spokesman accused the Sea Shepherd crew of throwing acid and said the Steve Irwin rammed the Kaiko Maru, and then repeatedly overtook and menaced the Japanese vessel for three hours at dangerously close quarters.

Strategic Importance of HLS in the broader

anticapitalist fight

26-12-2008 by Class Warrior, IndyBay, USA

The campaign to shut down HLS has become a "meeting engagement"-a battle neither side can afford to lose. Here is what the pro-vivisection "Foundation for Biomedical Research" (or FBR) had to say in their 2006 "illegal incidents report" about the importance of the campaign to close Huntingdon "Life" Sciences (HLS)

"Beyond the issue of research and the debate surrounding animal rights, there is a larger and more troubling message surrounding this regrettable pattern of capitulating to activist attacks. This is because those who seek to attack any corporation for any reason have, thanks to SHAC, now been provided with an effective model to gain publicity for their cause, seriously harm the company with which it has any complaint, as well as its employees, customers and vendors."

This is a quote from a document the FBR distributed on Capitol Hill during their 2006 campaign to pass the draconian revisions of the Animal Enterprise "Terrorism" Act. Most of the document whined about the steady drumbeat of protest and direct action against HLS-related targets.

What the FBR is saying in this particular snippet is that the battle over HLS has become so important that the capitalists can't afford to lose-no matter what. The Green Scare has in turn created a situation where opponents of capitalism also cannot afford to lose-or law enforcement gains a model to shut all of our movements down. In short, neither we activists nor the system as a whole can accept defeat on HLS, so it has become a strategic point of engagement affecting all of capitalism and anticapitalism.

First, some background: the campaign to close HLS is based on a mixture of protest by aboveground groups and direct action by underground operatives against any corporation that has any financial connection (of any kind) to HLS. This has driven away bankers and insurers to the point that the UK government had to set up a special account for HLS.

This "tertiary targeting model" has driven Huntingdon Life Sciences to its knees. Were it not for constant infusions of cash and aid from the entire industry, the UK government, and possibly the US government, HLS would long ago have closed their doors. Think about this for a moment: how many evicting landlords, land-destroying developers, or other capitalists short of war contractors would get this kind of backup? How many two-bit slumlords can get a special government bank account if anti-poverty activists succeed in driving away their bankers, insurers, and investors?

If we back down under fire, all targets of protest will know we can be waited out or crushed. If HLS goes bankrupt, every bloodthirsty multinational corporation on Earth will know people have the strength, the tools, and the strategy to make them next in line for bankruptcy.

Because of these extraordinary high stakes, the HLS campaign has become what is known in military terms as a "meeting engagement." A meeting engagement is a battle which may start small but gets bigger and bigger as both sides pour in more and more resources. This happens when neither side can afford to lose.

Entire wars often turn on the outcome of battles with names like Midway and Stalingrad that ring through history. What happened at Stalingrad? Neither Hitler nor Stalin would accept defeat in a city named after Stalin, causing both sides to pour in so much of their military assets that the winner of Stalingrad (Russia) was able to drive all the way to Berlin with little further opposition. Stalingrad was destroyed, but so was Gen Paulus's Sixth Army, and the Nazis never recovered. All that over a city the Nazis could have bypassed had it not been named after Stalin-over a NAME!

HLS might seem like a tempest in a teapot compared to the great battles of history, but if HLS collapses, everyone fighting against any part of capitalism whatsoever will have a battle-proven roadmap to victory. If law enforcement succeeds in crushing the opposition to HLS, then they would be the ones with a battle proven roadmap to victory, risking defeat for every anticapitalist cause inside the borders of the Empire. This means the Battle of HLS has become a meeting engagement, and neither we nor they cannot afford to lose this fight no matter what the cost.

If activists in wealthy nations are able to begin shutting down the worst corporate offenders with names like Exxon and Nestle, we will shorten the global conflict over capitalism and save human lives. HLS may sound like it is only an animal rights issue, but believe me-it has morphed into the meeting engagement between anticapitalist fighters and the servants of the Enemy. If we succeed in destroying HLS and then use the same tools to bankrupt murderers like Exxon and Bechtel, rest assured history will never forget our sacrifice and struggle.

The police and the FBI have declared war on pro-animal and pro-Earth activists. Now it's up to us to fight and win the battle, not just for us, not just for the animals imprisoned in HLS, but for everyone victimized by corporate power or any of its wholly-owned police and military subsidiaries. Show these brutes no mercy, fight them with no quarter asked or given, for we shall receive none!

Boxing Day hunting battle rages

26-12-2008 South Wales Guardian, Wales, UK

The battle lines will be drawn as hunters and anti-hunt campaigners converge in the countryside across Britain for the traditional Boxing Day meets. Nearly four years on from the ban on hunting in England and Wales and nearly seven years since the ban was passed in Scotland, opposition over the killing of foxes, deer and hares in organised chases is as fierce as ever.

More than 7,700 people have backed a new petition to support the repeal of the Hunting Act and the number is growing, said the Countryside Alliance.
Launched last week, it invites people to scrap the "confusing, unnecessary and divisive" Act, which came into force on February 18 2005.

Hunt Saboteurs Save Fox. Ledbury Hunt Nov 2008

But as hunts up and down the country prepared for the Boxing Day events, anti-hunt campaigners said the hunters were exploiting loopholes to act "with impunity" in killing animals.
More than 300 hunts, including 194 fox hunts with packs of hounds, are expected to take place across England, Wales and Scotland, the Countryside Alliance said.

The majority will use "trails" - a scent of the quarry laid down artificially. An already dead fox is often the reward for hounds at a hunt's end.
But a number will use the Act's exemptions.

Up to 50 hunts will use the "bird of prey" exemption, which allows the flushing out of a fox by hounds for a bird of prey. Many of the hunts now have their own eagle owl or golden eagle. And a number of hunts use an exemption that allows the use of two dogs to flush out the quarry from woodland for shooting.

The Hunt Saboteurs Association (
http://hsa.enviroweb.org/hsa.shtml) wants the Hunting Act to be strengthened, with a recklessness clause added for the prosecution of hunts where animals are chased and killed "by accident".

Report: Alberta Mines Imperil Birds

Tar Sands Operations Affect Migrators, Environmentalists Say

26-12-2008 By Kari Lydersen, Washington Post Staff Writer, USA

CHICAGO -- About half of America's migratory birds fly from destinations as far-flung as Chile to nest in Canada's boreal forest. In Alberta, that forest lies above tar sands that contain oil reserves second only to Saudi Arabia's.

Photo by Nancy Groce, Smithsonian Institution

The excavation of the tar sands -- projected to pump $2.4 trillion into Canada's economy between 2010 and 2030 -- could reduce the region's migratory-bird population by almost half, according to a peer-reviewed study released Dec. 2 by U.S. and Canadian environmental groups.
The Connecticut warbler and the blackpoll warbler, which fly through the Washington area en route from Alberta's boreal forests, are among about 300 species affected by tar sands mining.

The study estimates that over 30 to 50 years, tar sands excavation will reduce bird populations by anywhere from 6 million to 166 million, including several endangered and threatened species. The world's only natural breeding ground for endangered whooping cranes, for example, lies north of the Albertan tar sands, and the Athabasca River, which feeds the cranes' wetland habitat, flows north through the sands.

The report calls for a moratorium on new tar sands development pending further study of environmental impacts or, failing that, measures that include noise reduction and habitat restoration.

Location of the Athabasca, Cold Lake, and Peace River oil sands in Alberta with regulatory boundaries.

The mining of bitumen, a form of crude oil, from the gooey oil sands destroys habitat, drying up and contaminating wetlands where birds nest or rest during migration. Birds also land on tailing ponds, the large reservoirs where toxic runoff is stored, and often sink after becoming covered in oily residue.
"They see what looks like this great lake to spend the night on, and it turns out to be a death trap," said Doug Stotz, senior conservation ecologist at the Field Museum in Chicago, where the study was released.

David Collyer, president of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, said tar sands projects already undergo an environmental assessment process that includes effects on birds.
"There clearly is some environmental impact with any oil sands activity," he said. "But that has to be balanced with the economic impact of these projects. The report is clearly an advocacy piece by the environmental groups. I think it misrepresents and exaggerates the environmental impacts."

Henry Henderson, Midwest director for the Natural Resources Defense Council, one of the environmental groups involved in the study, said U.S. and Canadian endangered species laws and a migratory-birds treaty should be given more consideration when Canadian government bodies evaluate tar sands development, and when U.S. state and federal agencies judge applications for refineries and pipelines to process and transport the oil.

Henderson said the laws and the treaty "aren't enforced at all," partly because quantifying the wide-ranging effects of tar sands development is difficult without more data on bird populations.
Five Midwestern refineries are seeking permission to modify their plants to process Albertan tar sands oil, and Hyperion, a Dallas-based company, is proposing a new tar sands oil refinery in South Dakota.

Veel dieren in Verenigde Arabische Emiraten overlijden door plastic afval....

Plastic-related animal deaths still very high

25-12-2008 By Emmanuelle Landais, Staff Reporter, Dubai

Dubai: Plastic waste in the UAE is still causing the death of hundreds of animals. Nearly a year on since UAE residents were shaken up by the effect of plastic on wildlife and nature, the situation has not improved at all, according to a leading veterinarian.

Cameron Oliver campaigns to bring awareness to plight of camels
with a poster saying "Please Stop Killing Me" above and "Don’t Litter" in Abu Dhabi.

Dr Ulrich Wernery, scientific director at the Central Veterinary Research Laboratory in Dubai told Gulf News that despite efforts to alert the public on what throwing litter really amounts to, plastic is still killing animals.
In January this year Dr Wernery alerted Gulf News to the amount of plastic bags and waste being ingested by camels and gazelles that turns to calcified rocks weighing up to 60km suffocating and killing them.

"There is no change," he said. "There are more and more people talking about plastic pollution but there has been no change from what I am seeing everyday."
"If you go to the desert you will see what I am talking about. People are coming back from camping trips devastated at the amount of waste - and it is getting worse," he said. "In supermarkets you only really see a few people with their own bags."

Dr Wernery projects that it will take many more years for a real change to become visible and for people to really start caring about not throwing rubbish carelessly. "It is very sad. There is no change and no decline. I see animals dying on the table everyday.
"We do a post mortem and find plastic in their intestines. Action has to be taken from the top," he said.

A young Abu Dhabi resident that did take action is Cameron Oliver, 11 who created his own 'Don't Litter' campaign following Gulf News' coverage of Death Valley, a Ras-Al Khaimah plain covered in plastic and other waste Dr Wernery nicknamed after he found a number of animal carcasses there.

Rewarded
Oliver was rewarded for his hard work with an Abu Dhabi Award presented by General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.
"I was there and I am very proud of Cameron. I was invited by his family. He saw the Gulf News article and wanted to start something at his school.
"His promotion of the anti-plastic campaign was really very good," Dr Wernery said.

Gedumpte honden in Amerikaanse stad Ferris, Texas, mogen doodgeschoten worden

Policy permits wild dogs to be shot in Texas town

25-12-2008 © 2008 The Associated Press, The Houston Chronicle, USA

FERRIS, Texas — Authorities in a rural North Texas town can now shoot wild, roaming dogs, according to a new policy that has riled animal welfare advocates. Created last week to curb its growing population of feral dogs, the policy permits Ferris (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferris,_Texas) authorities to use shotguns to kill aggressive dogs running loose.

Ferris City Manager David Chavez said the Ellis County town was becoming an unwanted pet dumping ground. People drive out to the country to release their pets when they no longer want them, but the starving animals breed, form packs and wind up scavenging for food, he said.

Animal rights advocates said there must be a better way to solve the problem.
"It's unfathomable to me that the city of Ferris just outlandishly wants to go out and shoot these stray dogs," Niloofar Asgharian, a board member of the nonprofit Animal Connection of Texas, said in a story in The Dallas Morning News. "It doesn't do anything except that these dogs end up dying a slow, miserable death."

But Ferris Police Chief Frank Mooney said the city has tried other methods with little success. The chief said they would shoot only potentially violent dogs as a last resort — after attempts to humanely capture the animal had failed.
"It's not a task anybody relishes down here," Mooney said. "You have to take care of the situation now or wait until someone's dead."

There are anywhere from 50 to 100 feral dogs roaming Ferris' streets, said Misty Clark, the city's lone animal control officer. She said the dogs flee when they see her truck.
"You'd think I was a police officer and they just robbed the bank," Clark said. "They run away and look back at me to see if I'm following."

Animal welfare advocates suggests using nonprofit groups to help trap the animals or encourage punishing those who dump dogs — anything but shooting the dogs.
"It seems like a cruel punishment to the animal when the blame is on people," said Sherwin Daryani, the executive director of Operation Kindness.

Deense dog Honey in Nieuw Zeeland danst op 'Big Spender' van Shirley Bassey

Dancing Great Dane loves to boogie

26-12-2008 (The Dominion Post), The Malborough Express, New Zealand

She is a 70-kilogram Great Dane that stands as high as a small horse but she has grace, rhythm and canine boogie oozing from her clumsy, oversized paws. Well, actually, Honey the dancing dog has been compared to a lumbering elephant.

TAKING A BOW WOW WOW: Hsin-Yi Cohen and her dance partner, Great Dane Honey,
who has grace, rhythm and canine boogie oozing from her clumsy, oversized paws.

But she is one of countless prancing pooches caught up in the latest fad to grip the world of dog lovers and their pets canine freestyle.

The fast-growing, fun form of dog training has animals and their owners dancing together in choreographed routines of tricks and moves set to music.

Honey and her owner, Hsin-Yi Cohen, have just scooped top prize at the National Dog Training Assembly in Auckland. They won the Shayiska Trophy for best overall routine with their snappy take on the Shirley Bassey classic Big Spender.

Though the pair were initially mocked for Honey's monstrous size and slow and plodding style, they proved that big and "dopey" can be a winning combination on the doggy dance floor.

Tobacco giant Philip Morris infiltrated Thai

research: Report

25-12-2008 Newkerala.com, India

Bangkok, Dec 24 : A scientist working for the American cigarette-maker Philip Morris infiltrated a Thai research institute, a study alleged. The scientist, Roger Walk, gained access to the Thai scientific community and was able to "influence" teaching and studies on environmental poisons, a University of Sydney study lead by Ross MacKenzie claims.

The Bangkok Post newspaper (http://www.bangkokpost.com/topstories/topstories.php?id=135556), citing the study Wednesday, said the scientist used his contacts within Thailand to "advance the interests of Philip Morris in the country and throughout Asia".

The Australian researchers said such links were "of great concern to the public health community". The paper alleges that Walk "infiltrated" the Chulabhorn Research Institute, an independent biomedical agency funded by the Thai government, at around the time the agency was cementing links with the UN' World Health Organisation (WHO).

"The WHO has stated that a firewall is in place between itself and the tobacco industry" but in fact "this firewall is not impenetrable", said the report. The study says better safeguards are needed to prevent tobacco companies from "thwarting public health goals".

A British research team recently alleged that British American Tobacco had helped to form the Beijing Liver Foundation in China in order "to reprioritise the agenda of the Ministry of Public Health" on smoking. Thailand moved to the forefront of the global campaign against smoking in May 2005 by insisting that cigarette packets needed to be half-wrapped in graphic health warnings and that all tobacco advertising in retail stores be taken down. Smoking bans were extended to all bars and other entertainment places in February last year.

There are an estimated 12 million smokers out of a population of 64 million Thais. Nearly 1.2 million smokers are teenagers.

268 Panda's in gevangenschap geboren in China - Aantal in wild levende panda's in China geschat op 1.590

Giant pandas born in captivity reach 268 in China

25-12-2008 (Xinhua), China Daily, China

BEIJING -- Thirty-five giant pandas have been born in captivity in China this year with 31 survivors, People's Daily reports Thursday. The figure brought the total number of pandas born in captivity across China to 268, according to the Sate Forestry Administration.

"Despite the massive earthquake in May, China has achieved gratifying results in panda reproduction," said Cao Qingyao, a spokesman of the Administration.
Of the 31 newborns, the Wolong and Chengdu panda breeding bases in southwestern Sichuan Province contributed 13 and 16 respectively, while the base in its neighbouring Shaanxi province bred two.

Twenty-seven pandas born in captivity in China are living in zoos of the United States, Australia, Thailand and Spain, according to the Administration.

Giant pandas are among the world's most endangered animals. China has about 1,590 pandas living in wild, mostly in Sichuan and the northwestern Shaanxi and Gansu provinces.

It's all white, deer: The dazzling bucks making

a perfect seasonal picture

25-12-2008 By Daily Mail Reporter, The Daily Mail, UK

These white fallow bucks make the perfect seasonal picture as they roam through the forest. Posed in an almost mirror image, the dazzling white fur of these young bucks cut a truly extraordinary sight next to the brown coats of their fellow deer.

However they might not being Christmas cheer to their fellow fallows - these deers are known as Judas deers as their pale colouring stands out among the herd and makes them visible to poachers.

The magnificent creatures were snapped by amateur photographer and wildlife enthusiast Stan Kemish, president of the British Deer Society's Wessex division.
Mr Kemish, from Hampshire, was delighted to find the two unusually coloured young bucks roaming together at the Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary in the New Forest (http://www.new-forest-national-park.com/bolderwood-deer-sanctuary.html).

The retired 73-year-old said: 'I was really lucky to get this photograph - it was purely by chance that I came across them.
'These two had been spooked by the sound of a dog barking in the distance and they had raised their heads in such a majestic way.
'I think the picture really captures the beauty of these animals - they really look their best when they are alert."'

Mr Kemish believes the bucks are two of a group of around 20 white fallow deer that roam the forest.
He said: 'The white deer are such remarkable creatures and such beautiful animals.
'It's so spectacular to see them and people love to come down to the forest to catch a glimpse of them because they are seen as such a big novelty.'

It is thought the snowy-white complexions are not down to a lack of pigmentation but a gene found in some fallow deer.
Mr Kernish said: 'It's a common misconception that the deer are albino.
'If this were the case they would have pink eyes and pink feet but this isn't the case with these deer.'

We're in the monkeys

24-12-2008 Bill Lueders, The Daily Page, Madison

Wisconsin, thanks to Madison, leads the nation in the number of nonhuman primates used in experimentation.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, which oversees animal research, recently reported that 8,859 monkeys were used for experiments here in 2007, a 44% increase over the year before. Almost all were in Madison, with the largest share -- 7,313 -- at Covance Laboratory .

What Covance Doesn't Want You to See

The lab on Madison's northeast side also reported using 5,134 dogs, 2,639 rabbits, 863 hamsters, 332 guinea pigs, 261 pig pigs, 32 cats and no partridges in pear trees.

SAEN (Stop Animal Experimentation Now! http://www.all-creatures.org/saen/contact.html), an Ohio-based watchdog group, says some primates used by university facilities are not reported. The group also questions the accuracy of claims that none of the monkeys used by the UW-Madison -- or anywhere in Wisconsin -- were subjected to the most severe category of pain.

"If humans were infected with AIDS, deprived of water for 16 hours, had devices bolted into their skulls or subjected to electro-ejaculation [which is pretty much what it sounds like], they would surely feel pain and/or distress," says SAEN director Michael Budkie, referring to some experiments at the UW, which reported having 1,500 monkeys on hand.

Protesten SHAC UK tegen HLS gaan door ondanks repressief overheidsbeleid

SHAC DO CHRISTMAS & SOLIDARITY DEMOS

24-12-2008 SHAC UK, IndyMedia UK

Just because it is Christmas doesn't mean HLS will stop. Neither will SHAC. Just because they bang up activists, HLS won't take a break. Neither will SHAC. On 24th December we paid early Christmas presents to those who fund, buy and support the animal torture at HLS.

We arrived in the morning at Steris and despite the big articles on SHAC in all of the major newspapers, we received amazing support from everyone who pass. Steris as always retreated to their back offices and workers were seen running through the main doors to escape our passionate speeches.

Next on to Cardinal Health who were expecting us to have taken Christmas off. Gone were the usual hoards of security that normally guard their dirty secrets and out came one security guard who filmed the whole of our demo on his camera phone. Workers were wished a happy Christmas and asked to remember the animals who will suffer at HLS over the holiday period.

We then hit AXA in central Basingstoke. This company are major players in the NYSE who could help het HLS kicked off it. We stayed long enough to make our presence felt and had security running in circles trying to work out how to shut us up. After giving out handfuls of leaflets about the sex offenders and druggies testing on animals inside HLS, we decided to leave with seasonal peace and goodwill to all.

We jumped over the road and down into the heart of Basingstoke to name and shame Barclays. Security came running down the road to tell us to tell us that our protests didn't matter because no one in the building could hear us. Their quick response to the demo leads us to think otherwise? People of Basingstoke were more than sympathetic to the campaign and one lady even told the security guard he was being stupid by telling members of the public that The Times (that respectable old newspaper) said that we were all criminals.

On our way home we stopped to remind PPD in Winchester that our passion and hatred for HLS is for life, and not just for Christmas. When we were sure that all the workers would have the images of abused beagle puppies in their minds as they headed home early, we left.

Our demos today were dedicated to Gerrah, Gavin, Heather, Natasha, Greg and the two Dans. Solidarity, love, liberation and a Merry Christmas.

Zoo's tubby tigers on 'starvation' diet

24-12-2008 From correspondents in Kathmandu, The Daily Telegraph, Australia

AUTHORITIES in Nepal said today that they have stopped feeding tigers in the country's only zoo for one day a week to keep them from piling on the pounds. One of three fat cats at Jawalakhel zoo in the Nepali capital now weighs in at about 220kg, having gained 40kg on a diet of buffalo meat in just eight months.

The diet for "Kancha", which means "the youngest child", and two other Royal Bengal tigers is enforced in consultation with foreign zoos which also have a tight feeding regime for the endangered animals.

"We don't give the tigers anything to eat on Saturdays except water," zoo official Binad Karmacharya said.
"The practice of feeding tigers for six days a week is good for their health."
An adult of the species can weigh up to a majestic 300kg.

There are only about 4000 tigers left in the wild worldwide, according to World Wildlife Fund (WWF) 2008 estimates.
The survival of the wild cat is threatened due to loss of habitat, poaching and illegal trade in tiger parts.

Two baboons die of exposure at Moncton, N.B.,

zoo after being locked outside

24-12-2008 Metro, Canada

MONCTON, N.B. - A tragic accident has claimed the lives of two baboons at the Magnetic Hill zoo (http://www.moncton.ca/Page473.aspx) in Moncton, N.B. General Manager Bruce Dougan says the animals died of exposure on Monday after a door leading from an outdoor cage to an indoor enclosure was left locked.

Dougan says for safety reasons the animals are locked outside while food is prepared and their indoor enclosure is cleaned.

Unfortunately, the keeper forgot to unlock the door to let the animals back in. Dougan says a thorough investigation will be carried out.

Emu stabbed to death in Bundaberg zoo

24-12-2008 David Barbeler, Bundabery News Mail, Australia

Police are investigating the suspicious death of the bird, which happened at Bundaberg's Alexandra Park and Zoo on Tuesday night. RSPCA spokesman Michael Beatty described the scene as vicious.

"Somebody snuck into the zoo. It was in an enclosure and they've just gone in and stabbed the animal," Mr Beatty said.
"Something very similar to this happened about 10 years ago."

Mr Beatty said the zoo had moved an ostrich from its enclosure, fearing for its safety.
"If they catch the offenders, we're going to offer help in any way with the prosecution, because the police can charge them under the Animal Care and Protection Act."

The incident comes as the RSPCA struggles with a spate of sadistic attacks on animals including koalas, kangaroos, magpies, dogs and goats in Queensland.
"It's just been a horror year for us, just one thing after another," Mr Beatty said.

LEZERSFOTO ALBERT BOLINK, HENGELO

Targeted firm forced to hide share trading

24-12-2008 Chris Tryhorn, The Guardian, UK

Despite yesterday's conviction of four animal rights activists, Huntingdon Life Sciences still takes extraordinary precautions to continue trading. The company was once listed openly on the London stock exchange, but this meant that for a small fee protesters could buy access to the company's shareholder register, allowing them to widen their campaign of intimidation to target investors. Soon trading in Huntingdon's shares petered out as City dealers refused to touch them and the company's share price nosedived.

Huntingdon switched its official headquarters to the US, setting up a new holding company in Maryland, where investors remain anonymous unless they own more than 5% of a company. This new shell company, Life Sciences Research (LSR), took over Huntingdon at the start of 2002.

LSR was ready to join the New York stock-market in 2005 but abandoned its move at the last minute amid fears of a violent protest in the US. Eventually LSR made it to the NYSE Arca exchange, which uses an electronic trading system that makes it harder to trace which individuals or institutions are trading in a company's shares. Earlier this year, LSR was worth around $400m (£272m) before it was sucked up in the stockmarket downturn.

Huntingdon says it has not suffered as a result of its flight to the US, reporting revenues of $236.8m last year, a 23% increase on the previous year. But it still has to use the UK government for banking and insurance facilities because financial institutions fear they will be targeted by activists if they are linked to Huntingdon.

Its managing director, Brian Cass, has accused the financial services industry of treating Huntingdon as "radioactive".

AH noemt 'blank kalfsvlees' campagne Wakker Dier laakbaar - Onduidelijkheid over blank kalfsvlees

For extremists who blackmailed animal lab,

it was all about the cause

Detetectives who snared Huntingdon Life Sciences blackmailers said group was set up like organised crime gang

23-12-2008 Sandra Laville, crime correspondent, The Guardian, UK

From the picturesque Hampshire village of Eversley, seven extremists plotted one of the most successful campaigns in the history of the Animal Liberation Front. It spread from meetings around the log fire in an English country cottage to Surrey, Kent, Sussex, and on to Sweden, Germany, Holland, France, Belgium and the US, stoked by the belief that the work carried out by Huntingdon Life Sciences, the animal research laboratory, had to be stopped at all costs.

Over six years the seven extremists — veterans with criminal records as well as fledgling activists — organised a blackmail campaign that targeted thousands of companies withlinks, however small, to HLS. The campaign was funded by donations from the public to stalls in London's Oxford Street and elsewhere, many of which made up to £500 a day.

Greg Avery, 41, his former wife Heather Nicholson, 42, and his current wife, Natasha Avery, were leading figures with a history of ALF activity. They brought younger activists on board: 21-year-old Daniel Wadham, who was being groomed to take over from Avery as the campaign's leader, Kim Gerrah Selby, 20, and her former boyfriend Daniel Amos, 20. They used the computer skills of a veteran activist, Gavin Medd-Hall, 45, to plot how they would escape detection.

As far as Avery and his team were concerned, anyone was a legitimate target, from individuals who drove delivery vans to the site to scientists at leading drug companies. No one was immune to the threats of violence, slanderous allegations and terrorising attacks that were the trademark of the extremists within Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (Shac).

"What was terrifying for victims was the sustained nature of the campaign against them. It went on for years, " said Detective Chief Inspector Andy Robbins, of Kent police, which led the investigation.

William Denison, the managing director of F2 chemicals, received a hoax bomb and letters alleging he was a paedophile were sent to 200 neighbours. Fourteen slogans, including "bill the murderer", were painted on a 500-yard stretch of road near his house. It was, Denison said, "living hell".

And it proved highly successful. Over the six years HLS had to turn to the government for help when no bank or insurance company would provide services. In 2006 the company was forced, through the targeting of traders and market makers on the London Stock Exchange, to move its listing to New York, and as a result of the blackmail campaign scores of firms severed all links.

On the surface, the campaign that was formed in 1999 by Avery claimed everything it was doing was legal. Avery in particular often protested that Shac was only engaged in legal protest against a company that used animals to test drugs for pharmaceutical companies.

The government responded to drug company threats to take their business abroad unless something was done by introducing new laws in an attempt to stop the activists. HLS, in turn, went to the courts for protection, successfully taking out a string of injunctions against named individuals to stop them demonstrating outside their property. It was then, around 2001, when the extremists adopted a different, more sinister tactic.

From Little Moorcote, a country cottage rented from its unsuspecting owner, the seven activists worked in secret to draw up a list of thousands of companies using Wisdom, a search engine that provides information on linked companies, to help create their hitlist.

The seven had all had been brought up on the ALF doctrine uncovered by the FBI during one of its investigations into animal extremism: "Never discuss illegal activity indoors, over the phone, or email... Keep the discussion of illegal activity on a need to know basis only." From within the cottage they did their best to adhere to the ALF rules, but unknown to them every conversation they had was being listened to.

After years of inaction, 12 police forces started an unprecedented joint investigation into criminal activity against HLS by animal extremists. Until then there had been little or no liaison, and the numbers of attacks in Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Cambridgeshire and Thames Valley had soared with 346 animal extremist crimes in 2004 in south-east England alone. Senior police officers involved in the undercover operation deny their investigation was promted by pressure from the then prime minister, Tony Blair, but it is known Blair was demanding action.

The £3.5m investigation was led by organised crime detectives and the tactics they adopted were similar. "This to us was a criminal network of people and we looked at it as an organised crime group," said Robbins. Using covert audio and video surveillance they targeted Little Moorcote, where Avery and his team organised their "direct actions".

The operation, which lasted two years, was helped by close liaison with the FBI, who in 2006 had successfully convicted six US-based members of Shac of waging a campaign of terror against HLS.

The officers interviewed hundreds of victims, many of whom had moved house several times or been forced to put up sophisticated security cameras, alarms and panic buttons in their homes.

Crucial to their inquiry was the covert surveillance, particularly focusing on Easter Sunday last year when the activists met for a three-month review of their work. Officers deciphered encrypted emails in which the main players incriminated themselves and deciphered spreadsheets found on their computers that outlined the companies being targeted, the actions and the results.

One which was sent to BiteBack, the ALF website, read: "Last night a team of ALF volunteers offered their free vehicle servicing to a farm situated in a small Dorset village. A large and fairly new animal transporter used for taking animals to their deaths was given a complete makeover. All tyres slashed, sand poured into the gas tank, locks glued, windscreen wipers glued to windscreen, door mirrors covered in black spray paint, windscreen covered in the word 'scum' and the rest of the lorry left with messages such as 'killers', 'ALF watching you'".

The audio surveillance for 8 April last year began at 6.30am when Nicholson arrived for a day-long meeting. The conversations and emails intercepted described three months of the group's work, involving 17 direct actions against companies, and expressed the group's desire to target every company listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

In the afternoon on the warm Easter Sunday, Avery lit a bonfire, ostensibly so the group could enjoy a barbecue. But the blaze was used to destroy incriminating evidence, including spreadsheets and the briefing note that had been discussed during the day. Police found the evidence in the embers of the fire when three weeks later they arrested the activists.

Officers also found maps in the cottage pinpointing targets in Switzerland and, on a fragments of a computer spreadsheet, details of targets and actions taken against them, including hoax bombs, late-night vandalism and letters accusing the individuals of being paedophiles.

Robbins said yesterday the only difference between the animal extremists and the crime barons he usually investigates was the motive. "Most organised crime groups are driven by financial imperative and have a commodity some where along the line," he said. "Most people would find this hard to believe, but with these people there was no financial imperative. It was all about the cause."

Politie China arresteert twee inwoners Yichang (Hubei provincie) voor doden 10 zeldzame steuren - Minder dan 300 steuren in Yangtze Rivier

Police arrest poachers for killing 10 sturgeons

23-12-2008 (Xinhua), China Daily, China

YICHANG -- Chinese police have arrested eight suspects for allegedly killing 10 rare Chinese sturgeons and selling them for meat, police sources said Tuesday.

Chen Jianhua and Kang Jianguo, both residents of Yichang city, allegedly hunted 10 Chinese sturgeons between 2006 and 2008 in the Yichang section of the Yangtze River, the sources with the Yichang bureau of the Yangtze River maritime police.

A 3.5-meter-long Chinese sturgeon is released back into the Yangtze River in Shanghai in this June 17, 2007 file photo. Chinese police have arrested eight suspects for allegedly killing 10 rare Chinese sturgeons and selling them for meat, police sources said Tuesday.

A third suspect, Jin Hui, sold the sturgeons to a fish dealer Xu Youxin from Jingzhou city, who then distributed the poached meat through suspects including Yu Long, Pang Ying, Li Jincheng and Gong Zujia, the sources said.

Chen, Kang and Jin are all natives of Yichang City of central China's Hubei Province. They were arrested in October.
Xu Youxin, surrendered himself to the police on November 18.

The police found the clue when a dead sturgeon, weighing 300 kg and 3.5 m long, was discovered in Yichang on October 20 by a fisherman. It was trapped by a 21 m fishing net and had suffered multiple injuries.
The police spent two months breaking the ring.

The Chinese sturgeon, one of the oldest vertebrates in the world, has existed for about 140 million years. The endangered species are classified as protected animals in China. Fewer than 300 wild sturgeons are reported to live in the Yangtze River.

Rapid economic development, over-exploitation of the river, pollution and illegal hunting have driven the species to the verge of extinction. Many are killed by ship propellers, or mortally injured after becoming tangled in fishermen's nets.

Animal rights activists guilty of Huntingdon Life

Sciences blackmail campaign

Four animals rights activists have been found guilty of blackmailing companies who supplied Huntingdon Life Sciences.

23-12-2008 Telegraph, UK

Gerrah Selby, 20, Daniel Wadham, 21, Gavin Medd-Hall, 45, Heather Nicholson, 41, and Trevor Holmes, 51, were alleged to have orchestrated a campaign which ran between 2001 and 2007, Winchester Crown Court heard. All five denied conspiracy to blackmail but Selby, Wadham, Medd-Hall and Nicholson were found guilty. Holmes was cleared of the charge.

One of the jurors refused to be seen in court while the verdict was announced after 33 hours and 48 minutes of deliberation.
Sentencing will take place on January 19 at Winchester Crown Court.

Selby, Wadham and Medd-Hall were released on conditional bail, while Nicholson was remanded in custody.
Three other people - Gregg Avery, Natasha Avery and Daniel Amos - have pleaded guilty to conspiracy to blackmail.

The hierarchy of the group called Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (Shac) used threats such as claiming that managers of the companies were paedophiles, hoax bombs parcels, criminal damage and threatening telephone calls to force them to cut links with the animal testing company.
The aim was to target suppliers or any company with a secondary link with Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS), based in Cambridge.

One of the features of intimidation included sending used sanitary towels in the post, saying they were contaminated with the Aids virus, and personal campaigns against the management of companies including daubing roads outside their homes with words like "Puppy Killer".

Nicholson, from Eversley in Hampshire, was a founder member of Shac, who managed the "menacing" campaigns against the firms who were named on the group's website.
The blackmail would only stop when they put out a "capitulation statement" to Shac saying they would not supply HLS, which conducts animal testing for the pharmaceutical industry, the court was told.

The group targeted companies that worked
with Huntingdon Life Sciences

Medd-Hall, from Croydon in south London, was a computer and research expert high up in Shac who uncovered company links with HLS.

Wadham, from Bromley, south east London, joined Shac in 2005 and was in regular attendance at demonstrations against the firms and HLS.

Selby, from Chiswick in west London, was also a regular activist at demonstrations in the UK and Europe, including a violent demo in Paris.

Holmes, from Newcastle upon Tyne, was alleged to be a senior member of Shac who took part in criminal damage in the UK, the court heard.

Rare rhinos found in Java

23-12-2008 The Straits Times, Singapore

JAKARTA - FOUR calves of the world's rarest species of rhino (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Javan_Rhinoceros) have been found in remote jungle on Indonesia's Java island, giving hope to efforts to save them from extinction, an official said on Tuesday.

'Four Javan rhinos of six to seven months age were seen by scientists on the beach near the jungle during a recent field survey,' Agus Primabudi, the head of the Ujung Kulon National Park in West Java, told AFP.

Alerted to the presence of humans, the baby rhinos fled into the park to where two adult rhinos aged roughly 35 to 36, believed to be their parents, were staying, Mr Primabudi said.
Mr Primabudi said that the birth of the four calves has given new hope that the Javan rhinos can breed in the wild at levels high enough to keep the local population alive into the future.
'The most important thing we can do is to protect their habitat so that they can breed easily,' he said.

The Javan rhino, which is distinguished by its small size, single horn and loose skin folds, is likely the most endangered large mammal on the planet, according to WWF.

Roughly 90 per cent of the world's 50 or so Javan rhinos live in Ujung Kulon park, an oasis of wilderness on the western edge of one of the world's most densely populated islands.
The Javan rhino is classified as critically endangered by WWF and none of the animals currently live in captivity. -- AFP

Amerikaanse dierenactivisten verliezen rechtszaak tegen Universiteit San Francisco - Universiteit zou proefdieren slecht behandelen

Court rejects animal-rights appeal

23-12-2008 Bob Egelko, Chronicle Staff Writer, San Francisco Chronicle, USA

The federal Animal Welfare Act, which requires humane treatment of animals in federally funded research, can be enforced only by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, said the First District Court of Appeal in a ruling Friday. The court upheld a San Francisco judge's November 2007 dismissal of a suit by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.

The USDA's job is to strike a "somewhat delicate balance" between animal protection and the independence of research scientists, the court said. Allowing judges and juries to interfere with federally regulated experiments "might inject inconsistency and unpredictability into laboratory research" and discourage scientists from entering the field, Justice Timothy Reardon said in the 3-0 decision.

The suit, filed in July 2007, asked the courts to order a halt to allegedly illegal experiments and to appoint a monitor to oversee compliance with the federal law. The plaintiffs cited past USDA findings that UCSF had failed to meet minimum standards for humane treatment of animals 15 times between May 2001 and December 2003, part of a government lawsuit that the university settled by paying $92,500 in 2005.

One of those findings, animal-rights advocates said in the current suit, was that researchers monitored monkeys' reactions by bolting metal restraining devices into their heads and drilling holes in their skulls. The advocates sued under a California law that allows taxpayers to halt misuse of state funds, such as the money used to build and maintain the research laboratory.

Dan Kinburn, lawyer for the advocacy group, said Monday the appeals court had "sacrificed taxpayer interests in favor of the interests of animal researchers," and had given short shrift to the state's authority under federal law to prevent inhumane treatment of research animals.

Kinburn said he would consult with his clients about a possible appeal to the state Supreme Court.

UCSF officials were unavailable for comment.

Mainland´s panda pair ready to go

23-12-2008 CCTV.com, China

Relations across the Taiwan Strait have improved significantly after years of tension. Two giant pandas will travel to Taiwan on Tuesday as a gift of goodwill from the Chinese mainland.

A ceremony is being held there to mark the historical event and wish the animals a safe journey. Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan, both four years old, now live in Ya'an. Their previous home, the Wolong Nature Reserve, was seriously damaged in the massive May 12th earthquake.

Weather permitting, a plane from Taiwan-based EVA airlines will depart with Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan from Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, at 2pm Beijing time today. The aircraft is expected to reach Taipei about three hours later.

Chinese security and police officers stand watch as pandas, Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan, names together after "reunion," inside the truck leave the panda base in Ya'an, southwest China's Sichuan province, Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008. Two staff, a panda keeper and a veterinarian, from the Wolong Nature Reserve will accompany the pandas to Taiwan. After arrival, the pair will be housed in a four-story building at the Taipei City Zoo. They will have the first floor and an outdoor playground to themselves. The mainland announced in May 2005 that it would donate two giant pandas to Taiwan. However, their departure has been delayed since then.

Improved cross-Strait ties have made their journey to Taiwan possible. Authorities in Taiwan say the pandas are expected to meet the public during the Spring Festival, in the Chinese lunar new year. But this will depend on how they adapt to their new environment.

Scientist: stem cells could end animal testing

22-12-2008 By Matthew Knight, CNN, USA

LONDON, England (CNN) -- As well as their potential for creating effective therapies for debilitating diseases, embryonic stem cells could open the door to more effective pharmaceutical drug testing, according to a leading British stem cell researcher.

Speaking at a recent meeting of the British Pharmacological Society in Brighton, UK, Christine Mummery (http://www.lumc.nl/0000/13043/13073/80130061628221) described how using embryonic stem cells to create human heart cells could be a viable and scientifically exciting alternative to animal testing.

Embryonic stem cells seen pictured through a
microscope viewfinder in a laboratory.

Mummery, a Professor of Developmental Biology at Leiden University Medical Center in The Netherlands (http://www.onderzoekinformatie.nl/nl/oi/nod/onderzoeker/PRS1240751/) told CNN: "It could save a lot of time and effort of taking the wrong drugs through, or it may allow drugs through which are lost at an early stage, because they affect the animal cells but don't have an effect on human cells.
"It may also allow more and better drugs to come through the first tests or flag up safety issues at an earlier stage."

Drug development is an incredibly expensive and protracted process. Typically, it costs around $1 billion to bring a new drug to market and the whole process usually takes about ten years.

Before new drugs can go forward for clinical trials, it's necessary for the chemical compounds which make up a drug to undergo thousands of tests for toxicity before beginning trials on animals -- initially on rodents and then often on dogs.
It's here, at this ethically sensitive stage, that Professor Mummery believes stem cell research could transform drug development.

"Many drugs are designed to affect the heart deliberately, controlling beats and rates of contraction," said Mummery, who specializes in converting embryonic stem cells into cardiac and vascular cells.
But, as she points out, plenty of drugs designed to treat other complaints can also have negative side effects on the heart -- the painkiller Vioxx being a notable example.

"It's really important for the pharmaceutical industry to have proper test systems to pick those sorts of things up," she said.

Merck & Co withdrew Vioxx in 2004 because of concerns over increased risk of stroke and heart attacks. Lawsuits filed against the company have cost them billions of dollars and many litigants still await their day in court.

Stem cell based drug testing is already being promoted in the UK with the public/private initiative "Stem Cells for Safer Medicine" which was set up in 2007.
It's something Mummery hopes will be replicated in other countries and particularly in the U.S. under President-elect Obama who is a proponent of stem cell research.

A 2007 sabbatical at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts gave Mummery first-hand experience of the ethical debates that have engulfed stem cell research debates in the U.S..
"I was shocked at the light years we are away from the way people think about embryonic stem cells in the States," she said. "It's very mixed up with the abortion issue. It's put into the same category."

Public funding, or the lack of it, under President George W. Bush has also stymied research.
"What's happened in the U.S. is that people have become very frustrated and a lot of private initiatives -- like the Harvard Stem Cell Institute -- were started up to circumvent the lack of National Institute of Health (NIH) funding. NIH researchers a
