Giant Chinese sturgeon found in Yangzhou

Recently, a giant Chinese sturgeon, weighing close to 125 kilograms, was surprisingly found in the third section of the Yangtze River at Touqiao Town in Hanjiang District of Yangzhou, caught in the net of a local fisherman. The sturgeon had not sustained any injuries and it was released back into the Yangtze River the same night.

Pan Jianlin, Director of the Freshwater Fisheries Research Institute of Jiangsu Province, said that a wild Chinese sturgeon of such a heavy weight is quite rare both in Jiangsu Province and in the country, therefore it has significant value.

As a wild animal under national first-class protection, the Chinese sturgeon has been listed in the China Red Data Book of Endangered Animals. Thanks to improved protection efforts and fishermen's increasing awareness of ecological protection, fishery resources in the Jiangsu Province sections of the Yangtze River have become richer, enormously improving the diversity of living creatures in the Yangtze River area.
